The artists’ objective was to use art as a medium to create social awareness drawing attention to the plight of stray cats

"Feed the Stray" (15 May, 2014)

Description of Mural ArtFeed the Stray is a mural in George Town, Penang. It follows on the success of other street art that began with the steel-rod sculptures for Marking George Town and culminating with the murals by Ernest Zacharevic. The mural of a dog with its mouth open to receive meat was painted by artist Kenji Chai. According to Mr Chai, the dog is called chaigo, meaning stray in Chinese. Kenji Chai painted this dog as he was born in the year of the dog. He drew his inspiration from a dog that died on the road and also from stray dogs that nobody wanted. So he is highlighting their plight through his murals. According to Mr Chai, the piece which he call "The Dog with Meat" is originally known as "Feed the Stray". He painted it on the wall so that the general public can interact with the mural. The "Feed the Stray" mural graces a wall across from the Bruce Lee Cat mural by 101 Lost Kittens.

Artist’s BackgroundNAME: KENJI CHAIKenji Chai was born and raised in the city of simplicity, Sandakan, Sabah and currently lives in Kuala Lumpur. He was bred on comics, cartoons and storybooks from an early age and spent his days rummaging into these worlds of imagination. His works includes the use of cute and vibrant characters with his main medium being graffiti ,which combining elements of pop culture, fictional censorship, and a positive mental attitude, in all he creates layered scenes of mischief!

Concept of EPC ● Selective Attention- The art focuses on the feeding and the expression of the dog

● Nonverbal communication- encourages people to feed the stray animals.

that feeds them.

● Mass Communication- Clear message of feeding the strays is being projected to the public through mural art.

● Physical Appearance- Sense of joyness is shown on the face of the dog when being feed.

Mural Art in Selangor

"Green tea, anyone?" (June 2012)

Artist’s Background

Ernest ZalcharevicErnest Zacharevic or better known as ZACHAS in the art world, is a 28-year-old, Lithuaninan native who studied his way through life, but discovered street art and is now rather permanently based in Georgetown, Penang, Malaysia. He started out young, scribbling with crayons on his dad’s newspaper, which then transformed into art school in his hometown, Vilnius, Lithuania. After he graduated, he went to art academy to study graphic arts. ZACHAS found the experience too conservative and too much of a replication of his art school time. That is why he decided to move to London. His motive to move was that he wanted to separate from his parents and experience new cultures, perspectives and meet new people.

Description of Mural Art He worked on a project for Butter & Beans, a small cafe owned by his close friend in a quiet, residential part of Petaling Jaya, Malaysia. Like many of his outdoor pieces, he adds a dash of whimsy by mixing painting with actual objects.

A young boy holding a plant pot, pulls on a string which triggers a flow of leaves into a white cup sitting on a table. As he writes on his Facebook page, "Green tea, anyone?"

EPC ConceptInterpretive perceptionZalcharevic is an artist that draws art by using the interpretive perception technique that allows the viewers to interpret the art by themselves. He let the viewers to have a wild imagination with the art. “Green tea, anyone” indeed.

My interpretation on the art- it takes time to brew some tea. With certain techniques to make a good cup of tea, it took time. - When a person offered you a cup of tea, it could mean that person is being polite and want to

make friends. Also, it could mean that that person is appreciated the friendship between you and him/her.

EPC Concept

● Active perception- minds selects, organizers and interprets that which you sense- Example: show the green plant as green tea

“Squirrel Twister 2012” Mural

Description of Mural ArtThe mural art showed that a squirrel is hoarding the nuts in a safe and hidden place(often bury them). The nuts were stored for later consumption.

* This artwork can be found at Block C-G4, Happy Mansion, Section 17, Jalan 17/13, Seksyen 17, 46400 Petaling Jaya, Malaysia *

EPC Concept● Physical Appearance- Sense of joyfulness is shown on the face of the squirrel when having tons of food storing for later

consumption.

● Spaces and Proximity- The squirrel is holding tight its nuts which implies that those nuts are its possession.

● Subjective Perception- The green leaves indicated the squirrel is collecting back its food during spring season(after a

long hibernation in winter season).

EPC Concept● Nonverbal Communication- Since the art was drawn in a cafe, the squirrel was cuddling the food tightly which can imply that

the food was hard to find and was precious to it.- This meaning behind this art was to encourage the customers not to waste any food.

● Interpretive Communication- This art consists of meanings that should be interpreted by the viewers themselves. Everyone

interprets this art in different way. However, one thing for sure, the viewers would never interpret this art in negative way. Squirrels are cute and innocent.
