THE ORGANISATION
THE COURSE
Environmental Planning & Coordination Organisation (EPCO) was established in
1981 by Government of Madhya Pradesh as an autonomous body. It is located in
lush green campus of 60 acre in the heart of the capital city of Bhopal. EPCO is an
advisory body to the State Government on matters related to Environmental
Planning & Coordination. It has significantly contributed in this field and has
established it self as a premier organization. The organization has also been
associated with the prestigious international projects of World Bank, JBIC, DFID,
and UNDP and is the Nodal agency of Government of India - Ministry of
Environment & Forests for Biosphere Reserve, National Green Corps and National
Environmental Awareness Campaign. Its climate change cell is developing a full-
fledged knowledge center in collaboration with TERI (The Energy Resource
Institute, New Delhi).
The environment sector is increasingly attracting the attention of people in day to
day life. The effect of development on environmental parameters like weather-

by EPCO-Institute of Environmental Studies, a community college setup in
collaboration with IGNOU, with a view to educate people interested in the
environmental sector.
The broad objective of the programme is;
Increase understanding of Environmental issues
Develop knowledge on the thematic issues related to ecology & environment
Enhancing skills on environmental interventions.
Promote networking and sharing of experiences for contribution in
environmental conservation
Develop environmentally sensitive and technically enlightened citizen.
Disseminate environmental information of topical interest.

Mode of Teaching, delivery and assessment:
l Distance mode :
l Face to Face :
Resource material specially prepared for this course will be
provided for self learning in distance mode.
Contact classes will be conducted at EPCO-Institute of
Environmental Studies, Bhopal for teaching, practical and field demonstration.
There would be two contact sessions of two weeks (6 working days) each. At
least 80% attendance for fresh* candidates and 60% for in-service**
candidates is compulsory
l Project :
l Continuous evaluation :
l Hands on Training :
Would comprise of Project Report by individual candidates under the
supervision of Faculty.
There will be continuous evaluation through
assignments, practical and written examinations.
The fresh candidates* will have to undergo one month
hands on training in an organization/ industry. The in-service candidate** will
have to do a short term project, in their own organization, in lieu of hands on
training.
*Fresh candidate means those who are not employed
**In-service candidate means those who are serving in Government/Semi-
Government/Private Sector and have been working continuously for last three
years.
EPCO has adequate infrastructure in form of its own building with
laboratories, library, class rooms, demonstration centers (Rain Center,
Interpretation Center, Waste Paper Recycling Unit) etc.
Graduation in any discipline. There is no age bar for the
Programme.

service candidates. Environment is an interdisciplinary subject. The candidates will
get equipped to help mainstreaming environment in their respective disciplines. By
enriching their professional knowledge on environmental issues the fresh
candidates will have opportunity to provide input in environment related projects,
programmes and activities. The environmentally informed NGO personnel will be
able to play an active role in pro-environment opinion building in the society through
positive intervention. The course will facilitate development of environmental
leadership among individuals who will be able to contribute in generating
environmental awareness and up-gradation programmes for sustainable
development. The course has been developed by a team of academicians and
practicing environmental experts of reputed government and autonomous agencies
so as to impart applied knowledge.
` 8000/- for General category and ` 6000/ for SC/ST/OBC to be submitted
with application form or deposited at the time of admission. The fee will cover course
material class room teaching, demonstration, library, laboratories, examination etc.
However, EPCO may also consider providing part sponsorship to deserving
candidates who would request for the same. Concession in fee if any will be given
only on successful completion of the course.
