What Makes A Mother So Special

• Today is the day in our country that we set aside to celebrate our mothers

• Paul commanded that mothers be given honor (Eph. 6:2)

• Paul also says we are to give honor to whom honor is due (Rom. 13:7)

What Makes A Mother So Special

• We love our mothers like no one else on this earth

• So what is it that makes our mothers so special?

• There are several reasons why our mothers are so special to us…

Page 12: Ephesians 6:1-3 (NKJV) 1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 “Honor your father and mother,” which is the first commandment with

A Mother’s Love

• The first thing that makes our mothers so special is the love that they give to us

• Did you ever ask yourself why your mother does all that she does for you?

• It certainly isn’t for a paycheck

• A mother’s love is special

Page 13: Ephesians 6:1-3 (NKJV) 1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 “Honor your father and mother,” which is the first commandment with

A Mother’s Love

• Notice how Luke points out the reaction of Mary in Luke 2:51

• Mary was a mother, and a mother’s love is a special thing

• Paul reminds the older women to teach the younger to love their children (Titus 2:4)

A Mother’s Love

• Why?

• One reason is because of how important motherly love and affection is to our children

• It’s one of the reasons we love our mothers so much

A Mother’s Instruction

• How many of us can easily remember at least one thing that our mothers taught us?

• Mothers are constantly teaching

• We hear phrases like, “Momma always said…”

Page 16: Ephesians 6:1-3 (NKJV) 1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 “Honor your father and mother,” which is the first commandment with

A Mother’s Instruction

• There is even a song called “Mama Said” that came out in 1961 by the Shirelles

• How thankful we are for all of the wonderful instruction mothers give us

• Many who were successful had wonderful mothers to bring them up

Page 17: Ephesians 6:1-3 (NKJV) 1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 “Honor your father and mother,” which is the first commandment with

A Mother’s Instruction

• Samuel’s mother Hannah dedicated him to the Lord and made sure he received proper instruction by Eli (I Sam. 1-2)

• Paul credited the instruction that Timothy received from his mother Eunice and her mother Lois (II Tim. 1:5)

Page 18: Ephesians 6:1-3 (NKJV) 1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 “Honor your father and mother,” which is the first commandment with

A Mother’s Instruction

• Instruction is not just the job of the mother, but she certainly does have an important role

• Kids benefit when they have a mother that gives wisdom and instruction

• That instruction is to be obeyed (Eph. 6:1)

Page 19: Ephesians 6:1-3 (NKJV) 1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 “Honor your father and mother,” which is the first commandment with

A Mother’s Sacrifice

• Parents know something about sacrifice

• Mothers are special to us because we have seen them sacrifice over and over again for us

• There is nothing a mother will not do or give up for her children

Page 20: Ephesians 6:1-3 (NKJV) 1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 “Honor your father and mother,” which is the first commandment with

A Mother’s Sacrifice

• The love a mother has will cause her to do anything for her child

• Remember what Rebekah did for her son Jacob to ensure that he received the blessing from Isaac? (Gen. 27)

• Remember what the mother of James and John asked? (Matt. 20:20-21)

Page 21: Ephesians 6:1-3 (NKJV) 1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 “Honor your father and mother,” which is the first commandment with

A Mother’s Sacrifice

• Remember the mother who brought her baby before Solomon in a dispute with another woman? (I Ki. 3:16-28)

• A mother’s love is sacrificial such as in the story of Moses (Ex. 2)

• This is one of the things that makes a mother so special
