Note: Most items in this category contain only lyrics, although some do contain musical notation as well. However, it is difficult to discern whether or not many of the music- less lyrics are indeed words to hymns and songs, or just poems. It is for this reason that "poems" are included with this category.

CHORAL BUCH. Original manuscript; Music evidently Ls Beissel's own copy, the register is of late date, the binding is

of the original boards. In front are the various keys, then follow 250 pages of Ms. music together with the spaced chorus and antiphones, fol. 60-66, is the opening chorus of the "ROSEN UND LILIEN", fol. 67, showing how Beissel composed and wrote the four parts on one staff, 4 to 300 pp. This is a unique momento of the Ephrata Community, circa 1743. (# 3)

CHORAL BUCH of the Ephrata Sisterhood, original Ms. music of 403 hymns in the WEYRAUCHS HUGEL. Both this and the following book (#198) are the work of the Sisters of the Kloster circa 1745. 4 to 320 pp. and the origianl binding covered with Ephrata unbleached linen. The Capital letters of each line are inilluminated text, while the numerous decorations consist of floral and ornamental designs in which the Tulip and Pomegranite dominate, several full pages. All done in colors extracted from plant life, all the work was done with the quill pen. The Ephrata Cloister appears to have been the last place in the world where the art of Illumination of books, so general in the Middle Ages, was preserved and practiced. Two of the Sisters, Anastasia and Iphigenia, displayed the most skill and talent in it. This book which contains the music of the hymns in the WEYRAUCHS HUGEL is a beautiful specimen of art, each initial letter contains a colored flower and there are twelve elaborate designs in penwork and colors. The music of the cloister was peculiar, Conrad Beissel the Vorsteher gave great attention to it, and full descriptions of his methods may be found in the Chronicon Ephratense, and the Turtel Taube. Special attention is called to the twelve elaborate ornamenta- tions facing folios 3-6-8-36-42-50-5 8-59-87-89- 106- 12 1. This book is the only CHORAL BUCH where the pages are in perfect condition (not anymore.) (# 4)

CHORAL BUCH. Another copy of the CHORAL BUCH of the 198 Sisterhood, formerly the property of Sister Maecha done entirely with the ink of the Brotherhood and a brown wash tint, not nearly so elaborate as #197. There are, however, ten peculiar Ephrata designs facing folios, 3-18-36-50-6 1-87-88-96-106-121. The penwork in the volume appears to have been the work of different women as is shown by a comparison of the capital letters and music, original black linen binding. (# 5)

I I ZIBNITISCHER WEYRAUCHO HUGEL ODER MYRRHEN 223 I BERG. 12 mo., preface 10 p., text 792 pp. This hymn book I was set by the Ephrata Brethren and printed in the yea. 1739, 1 on the newly acquired press of Christopher Saurer at Germantown,

-1 and was the first American book in German Type. The preface 1 is dated: Ephrata, den 14, des 4 ten Monats 1739. The work I contains 654 hymns in 33 divisions, each inscribed with a head- i ing as fantastic as the general title. &er page 744 follows an I appendix of 38 hymns with the separate title: DIE EHYMNS

VERDORRETE, NUN ABER WIEDER GRUNENDE UND I

FRUCHTBRINGENDE RUTHE AARONS. The epithet Zionitische was probably suggested by the fact that a new monastic building was erected for the brethren in 1738 on the hill called Zion. The Weyrauchs Huge1 includes nearly all the hymns contained in the three Franklin prints of 1730, 1732, and 1736 with a few new ones composed by C. Beissel and his friends. But the large bulk of the text consists of material obtained elsewhere, mainly from the Kleine Davidische Psalter-
