LECTORS & INTERCESSORS AT MASS TODAY

THE COLLECT

Almighty and everlasting God, you govern all things both in heaven and on earth: Mercifully hear the supplications of your people, and in our time grant us your peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

THE LESSON

A Reading from the Word of God written in the Book of Deuteronomy Chapter 18 beginning at the 15th verse

Moses summoned all Israel and said to them, "The LORD your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your brethren -- him you shall heed -- just as you desired of the LORD your God at Horeb on the day of the assembly, when you said, `Let me not hear again the voice of the LORD my God, or see this great fire any more, lest I die.' And the LORD said to me, `They have rightly said all that they have spoken. I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brethren; and I will put my words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I command him. And whoever will not give heed to my words which he shall speak in my name, I myself will require it of him. But the prophet who presumes to speak a word in my name which I have not commanded him to speak, or who speaks in the name of other gods, that same prophet shall die.'

PSALM 84 Quam dilecta!

1.How dear to me is your dwelling, O Lord of hosts ! * My soul has a desire and longing for the courts of the Lord; my heart and my flesh rejoice in the living God.

2.The sparrow has found her a house and the swallow a nest where she may lay her young; * by the side of your altars, O Lord of hosts, my King and my God.

3.Happy are they who dwell in your house!* they will always be praising you.

4.Happy are the people whose strength is in you!* whose hearts are set on the pilgrims' way.

5.Those who go through the desolate valley will find it a place of springs, * for the early rains have covered it with pools of water.

6.They will climb from height to height, * and the God of gods will reveal himself in Zion.

7.Lord God of hosts, hear my prayer; * hearken, O God of Jacob.

8.Behold our defender, O God;* and look upon the face of your anointed.

9.For one day in your courts is better than a thousand in my own room, *- and to stand at the threshold of the house of my God than to dwell in the tents of the wicked.

10.For the Lord God is both sun and shield;" he will give grace and glory;

11.No good thing will the Lord withhold" from those who walk with integrity

12.O Lord of hosts, * happy are they who put their trust in you! Glory to the Father, and to the Son;*and to the Holy Spirit; As it was in the beginning is now:*and shall be forever. Amen.

THE EPISTLE

A Reading from the Word of God written in the First Letter to the Corinthians Chapter 8 beginning at the 1st verse.

"Knowledge" puffs up, but love builds up. If any one imagines that he knows something, he does not yet know as he ought to know. But if one loves God, one is known by him. Hence, as to the eating of food offered to idols, we know that "an idol has no real existence," and that "there is no God but one." For although there may be so-called gods in heaven or on earth -- as indeed there are many "gods" and many "lords" -- yet for us there is one God, the Father, from whom are all things and for whom we exist, and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things and through whom we exist. However, not all possess this knowledge. But some, through being hitherto accustomed to idols, eat food as really offered to an idol; and their conscience, being weak, is defiled. Food will not commend us to God. We are no worse off if we do not eat, and no better off if we do. Only take care lest this liberty of yours somehow become a stumbling block to the weak. For if any one sees you, a man of knowledge, at table in an idol's temple, might he not be encouraged, if his conscience is weak, to eat food offered to idols? And so by your knowledge this weak man is destroyed, the brother for whom Christ died. Thus, sinning against your brethren and wounding their conscience when it is weak, you sin against Christ. Therefore, if food is a cause of my brother's falling, I will never eat meat, lest I cause my brother to fall. Reader: Here ends the Reading All: Thanks be to God.

THE HOLY GOSPEL The Lord be with you

And also with you A Reading from the Holy Gospel

according to Mark Glory to Christ our Saviour.

At that time, they went into Caper'na-um; and immediately on the sabbath he entered the synagogue and taught. And they were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one who had authority, and not as the scribes. And immediately there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit; and he cried out, "What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are, the Holy One of God." But Jesus rebuked him, saying, "Be silent, and come out of him!" And the unclean spirit, convulsing him and crying with a loud voice, came out of him. And they were all amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, "What is this? A new teaching! With authority he commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him." And at once his fame spread everywhere throughout all the surrounding region of Galilee.

The Gospel of Christ Praise to Christ our Lord.

From the Rector’s Notebook Greetings:

This past week, while browsing online, I came across a blog post written by Kazimierz Bem, a former international refugee lawyer, now a minister in a Congregational Church in Massachusetts, USA.

In the post Bem utilizes a quote from John Calvin “To know God is to be changed by God; true knowledge of God leads to worship.”

Worship for Bem is the unique, distinct, set-apart thing the Church does and is called to do.

!6

Page 7: Epiphany iv [2015]

In the world in which we live there are many persons engaged in various activities; the church alone is called primarily to worship.

We may recall the thought of Soren Kierkegaard (1813-1855) who has taught us that the congregation as well as the liturgical leaders such as the musicians, readers of the scriptures, preachers and celebrants are the actors in the drama of worship and God alone is the audience for the drama.

Professor Kevin Irwin tells us that worship is directed towards God and goes on to say that it is an act whereby the body of believers enter together into a dialogue with the true and living God.

Worship may be rich and engaging, the words are often ambiguous and can carry various meanings depending at times on the demeanor, experience, knowledge and outlook of the worshipper.

At times there are those who say that they did not get anything from worship. Bem acknowledges that this is highly possible because worship is not directed towards the worshipper; it is decidedly aimed at God.

We must note that any so-called feeling that we receive would be secondary and can only come from entering into relation with God who continually reaches out to us in Word and Sacrament.

We do not attract people to worship; but we call persons to engagement with God through the Son who offered himself in sacrifice on the cross for us and who rose again in order that we may have new life in him.

Let us listen attentively to the opening prayer at Mass and to the readings, sermon. Let these lead us to the confession of faith, prayer and to confession and absolution and to making our communion faithfully.

!7

Page 8: Epiphany iv [2015]

We do these things that we may be able ministers of God, departing in peace to serve him in our communities until we can join again to worship and serve our Lord and God and share his message with all.

Your friend and priest,

Noel A. Burke, MA (The Rev’d Canon) Rector

Health Corner

!

What Is Alzheimer's Disease? Alzheimer’s disease is a brain disease that slowly destroys memory and thinking skills and, eventually, the ability to carry out the simplest tasks. It begins slowly and gets worse over time. Currently, it has no cure.

Alzheimer's disease is named after Dr. Alois Alzheimer, a German doctor. Seeing the doctor when you first start having memory problems can help you find out what’s causing your forgetfulness. It may be part of the aging process; but it is good to check.
