    1. Faith & Family Programming –Oct. 6, 2015 – 13th 2nd Tues. of the Month Our Programs tonight will be Men and Women’s Session. All programs start at 6:30 PM in the Rectory

    2. Stewardship Last week, I shared with you some of my thoughts, feelings, and reflections on the idea of stewardship and the financial needs of the par-ish. In addition, you should have received a letter from me in the mail this week which included a form to help you think more about tithing. I want to express again my gratitude for your support of the parish in the past and my hope that you will turn in your stewardship card in the upcoming weeks so that we can keep our parish spiritually and financially strong.

    3. Thank you to Amanda Suchara: Amanda Suchara, our Saturday 5 PM Mass music leader, has decided that God is calling her to move on to another minis-try. I know that I am extremely grateful for the years of service that Amanda gave here at Epiphany. She will definitely be missed. Please take the time over the next few weeks to let Amanda know how much you appreciated her.

    4. Save the Date for the Parish Mission Save the date for our Parish Mission. It will be October 25th to the 27th. Check out our website for more information. Fr. David Vincent Meconi, S.J., is professor of patristic theology at St. Louis University, where he teaches courses on Trinitarian theology, Christology and soteriology in the early Church, the history of Christian deification, and St. Au-gustine of Hippo. He recently marked his first year as editor of Homiletic & Pas-toral Review. Fr. Meconi recently spoke with Carl E. Olson, editor of Ignatius Insight, about being a Jesuit, a patristic scholar, and editor of Homiletic & Pas-toral Review. Day 1 of our Parish Mission. 5:30 PM Potluck Dinner in Gym 7:00 PM Mission

    5. Looking For A Car If you know of anyone who would like to donate a good used car to the Church for our seminarian to drive. We would greatly appreci-ate and work with you to get the tax credit. If you have an extra car that he could borrow from time to time that would also help us.

    6. Let Jesus Be Your Joy Seminarian Phillip has begun to share some of his

personal thoughts and reflections on the Epiphany Website. Please check them out under the title “Jesus Be Your Joy.”

    7. Altar of Remembrance in November A reminder, we will, once again, be having an altar of remembrance in the sanctuary during the month of Novem-ber. Please be prepared to bring your pictures of deceased loved ones to be placed on the altar on the first Sunday of November. You will be able to pick

them up on first Sunday of Advent.

    8. Volunteer Greeter needed for Sunday Mornings. We are looking for a volunteer or two who can help greet and direct people to the different events that are taking place at the rectory between Masses. Times needed would be from 9-10:20 AM. This would be a great way to reduce your time in purgatory.

    God bless, Fr. Tom

LIVING OUR FAITH 5pm Musician says

Goodbye and Thank You Dear Epiphany Parish: My time with you over the past 3 years has enriched my life and my music ministry immensely. This is a profoundly beautiful, prayerful com-munity, and it has been such a privi-lege getting to worship with you.

Sadly, my personal schedule has be-come increasingly full, and I feel it is time for me to say goodbye to you all as your Saturday 5 pm musician. I would never want to give Epiphany anything less than 100% of my energy and ministry. In the coming months, it will be difficult for me to properly prepare weekend musical worship... to do it as well as it deserves to be done. While I will still be available to the parish for funerals and weddings, my final day as a parish musician will be Saturday, October 24. I thank you and Fr. Pastorius for the opportunity of serving as music minister. I will always hold this parish commu-

nity in a heart of prayer, and I sus-pect our paths will continue to cross again and again. I have played thou-sands of Masses at scores of church-es, and i can tell you that I have nev-er heard any congregation sing with as much gusto and fire as Epiphany's 5 pm congregants! Every chance I get, I tell people about how im-pressed I am by the way your singing has nearly lifted the roof off the church! What an honor to have got-ten to hear that - to have gotten to be a part of that kind of music mak-ing! Many go their whole life without ever experiencing that kind of spirit-ed liturgy, and I've gotten it every

weekend for 3 years! Thank you, thank you... for all the ways you've blessed me. May you continue to know God's love and presence through music. Respectfully, with love, Amanda Suchara.

    LIVING OUR FAITH

Images of the Blessed Virgin Mary Our Lady of Atocha I have decided to, once again, devote my spiritual ponderings for the month of October to the Blessed Virgin Mary and in a special way look at how the Blessed Virgin Mary has been displayed throughout history and what religious lessons a particular image of the Blessed Virgin Mary teaches us. I will be referring to a book by hagiographer (a person who writes biographies of saints) Ann Ball. The book is called: The Other Faces of Mary: Stories, Devotions, and Pictures of the Holy Virgin around The World.

Have you ever thought what a unique creature human beings are? We are made up of matter (something that can be seen, taste, touched, smell, or heard) but yet there is something spiritual to us. It is because of this uniqueness that Catholicism never devalues matter or material things. In fact, we use material things to help express our spiritual-ness. For example, we use incense at Mass to symbolize our prayers rising up to God and to remind us that we understand divine things only vaguely as if looking through a pillar of smoke with watery eyes. We light candles to remind us that Christ is the light of the world and we have been charged with spreading His light to the world in need.

Please keep the above in mind as I introduce the next image of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This next image of the Blessed Virgin Mary is called Our Lady of Atocha. This image of Blessed Virgin Mary is peculiar in that it is the only image of the

Blessed Virgin Mary where the Christ child can be separated from the main statue. Devotees to this particular image of Mary can symbolically receive the Christ child from Mary to take into their home. As part of the devotion, people ask the Blessed Virgin Mary to not only intercede with them for their petition but also to allow her son to visit their house in a special way. (I know of some parishes that have a statue of Our Lady of Fatima that travels from home to home, I am assuming the Christ child travels in much the same way). This devotion should make each of us pause and think about what things we would change if we knew Christ would be spending the week with us and then realize that Christ is al-ways with us and so let us change those things

The image is also unique in that it portrays Mary as a fair-skinned medieval Spanish queen who is dressed with rich em-broidered clothes and she wears a golden crown. Jesus on the other hand is dressed as a Spanish pilgrim and had Indian (I am assuming Native American and not someone from India) features.

There is some who believe that the statue or at least the image that the statue of Mary is based on dates all the way back to St. Luke himself. It is said by some devotees that St. Luke carved the image when he was living in Antioch and thus “Atocha” is a shortened form of Antioch.

Another unique legend that surrounds this image of Mary is that during the time that part of Spain was under Moorish (Islamic) rule, people who were thrown into prison for one reason or another were left there to starve and, therefore, it was up to family members to bring food to their love ones in prison. A really evil Moorish leader came to power and de-clared that no one over the age of 12 would be allowed near the prison. It was the belief then that the older wiser men would starve to death because they would not have children under the age of 12 to bring them food. According to the legend, the women of the town went and prayed at the Church and appealed to the Blessed Virgin Mary for help. Soon the children of the town began to tell story to the adults about an unknown boy who was visiting and feeding the prison-ers. They said that he would always come at night, slipped pass the sleeping guard, and that his basket of bread and jug of water could feed all the prisoners without ever running out. The women eventually returned to the statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary to thank her for the miracle and they noticed that the shoes on the infant statue of Jesus were worn out.

Ten years ago, I would have said that this was a nice story, because back then I thought that I had to know everything and I did not like the idea of being surprised by things that I did not know. I also think that there was a part of me that did not want to admit that stories like this might be true because I did not trust God that much. In this present moment, I don’t necessarily believe the story to be true, but I don’t believe it to be false either. All I know is that I don’t know everything and I have seen many things that I cannot explain. I also do not fear God as much because I can see how He has used the bad times of my life to bring about good things. I also cannot help but believe that my God is a God of miracles.

Congratulations to St. Mary’s High School junior Danny Ranciglio , a parishioner of Epiphany. Danny was inducted into St. Mary’s High School’s chapter of the National Honor Society. He underwent a rigorous selection process in which he had to demonstrate the four characteristics of scholarship, character, leadership and service, as well as maintain a 3.5

GPA or higher. Congrats to Danny and his parents on this fine accomplishment!

Lectionary: 143 Gospel Mk 10:17-30 Spiritual Reflection: Aaron Collins was a computer technician in Kentucky who died unexpectedly in July at the age of 30. He had one final wish: "Leave someone an awesome tip and I don't mean 25 percent. I mean $500 on a pizza for a waiter or waitress." So Aaron's mother, brother and sister did just that. Not having the money themselves, they collected it from family and friends; then they went to Puccini's, a pizzeria in their hometown of Lexington. At the end of the meal, they told their waitress, Sarah, about Aaron and his final wish - then they handed the stunned waitress the five hundred dollars. When you finish your life how would you like people to remember you? Live that way now!!! Spiritual Questions: 1. Jesus gave us many good things in His earthly life. Do you think that he would be the same in his heavenly life? 2. Aaron’s generous life inspired his friends to do something good for others. Is your life going to inspire others? 3. How are you making others lives better now? 4. How is Christ still working in your life? 5. Why is it hard to enter into the Kingdom of heaven?

In your kindness, please pray for the repose of

the soul of Mary Heumann. May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, rest in peace.
