Dear Praying Friends,

St. Paul defends his apostolic ministry to the Church in Corinth (see 2 Cor. 11)

by listing all of the ways that he has suffered (beatings, shipwreck, hunger,

sleepless nights, etc.). He then adds this, “And, apart from other things, there is

the daily pressure on me of my anxiety for all the churches” (2 Cor. 11:28).

I so appreciate Paul’s honesty and share his anxiety. Through hundreds of

conversations over this last year, I have been invited into the fear, confusion, and

uncertainty that the congregations of this Diocese share. While the Lord is clearly

working among us, the future is still murky; and a bit scary, in many cases.

Aging and declining congregations; demographic shifts and declining towns;

cultural changes; the “daily pressure on me of my anxiety.”

That’s where prayer comes in! As Paul writes to the Church in Philippi, “Do not

be anxious [same word as above] about anything, but in everything by prayer and

supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God” (Phil.

4:6). Prayer is the antidote to the “daily pressure of my anxiety for all of the

churches.” Knowing that we are woven together by the Spirit through our prayer

for each other is encouraging. Mama Shari and I know that your prayers have

sustained us; and that your prayer for each other opens doors for the Gospel and

for God’s provision.

I commend to you this year’s Calendar of Prayer and encourage you to find

creative uses for it. Along with praying for each other in the Prayers of the

People each week, you might want to find ways of using the calendar in your

personal prayers. I know of one person (not me, yet) who prays through the

whole Calendar on a weekly basis!

While causes for anxiety will plague us until Jesus returns, God invites us to

bring everything into His presence and at the throne of grace to “receive mercy

and find grace to help in time of need” (Heb. 4:16).
