111 Turmoil in China, Egypt & Australia

1

It has been a week of turmoil around the world, with many people being killed in demonstrations in

Egypt, floods in China and asylum seekers off the coast of Christmas Island. ENW looks at all three

terrible stories in this week’s podcast – the final episode before our three summer specials from three

European capitals.

2

Reports in Egypt indicate that more than 850 people have been killed in clashes between security forces ,

members of the Islamic Brotherhood who are supporters of ousted Egyptian leader, President Morsi. It

has been nearly two months since President Morsi, the first-ever democratically elected leader in Egypt

as well as against Egypt’s Coptic Christian churches. The European Union has met to decide whether to

suspend economic aid to Egypt until the violence stops – last year the E.U. donated $6.7 billion.

3

From Egypt ENW travels to north-eastern China and the industrial city of Fushun, located on the Hun

River. Fushun City has experienced devastating floods that have so far killed more than 200 people. The

Chinese Government has reported that more than 37 million residents have been affected by the worst

flooding in the region for more than 50 years. More than 787,000 hectares of farmland – an important

grain growing area in China – have been destroyed by the huge floods.

4

Finally ENW goes to Christmas Island - a small island located in the Pacific Ocean between Indonesia and

Australia. The Australian territory has long been a popular destination for economic asylum-seekers from

Indonesia. Currently there are more than 3,000 people in detention centres on Christmas Island – which

normally has a population of just 2,000 people. Many people drown trying to cross the 500 km from

Indonesia to Christmas Island and Monday saw a ship carrying 106 people sink 220 km east of the island.

Asylum-seekers are a controversial issue in Australia, and the both major parties are promising solutions

if they win the Australian General Election on September 7th.
