If I could start my report by recalling a highlight of the year – the Club Awards selection meeting. First there was the selection of the Cricketers of the Year, awards based on the statistics contained in the report - a reasonably straightforward task. It was a great to hear of the high achievement of a number of our players within the Club competition and in some instances, in Association and selective sides. This must be one of the Club’s roles, to provide that opportunity.

Then followed the selection of the spirit of cricket awards. This was a more lively process. Every coach or manager could nominate and speak highly of players in their side whom they believed had achieved – in effort, in enthusiasm, in personal improvement as players and as team members. Some were new to the game and the Club, others were older hands that found a bit extra this season.

It was equally pleasing to hear of the enthusiasm and involvement exhibited by these players. And surely this enthusiasm and involvement should be a key mark of our success as a Club.

At this point I must congratulate and thank the players, the Milo “Have a Go” players, the new U10s through to the outgoing U16s – on behalf of the committee, congratulations. The words your coaches and managers have included in their reports describe well the positive approach you have brought to the game.

The awards selection also brought home the dedication of the coaches, the managers and the other parents who assist them. We shouldn’t forget that the Club is for the players and again on behalf of the Committee I would like to thank the team officials for your dedication and time that enabled the players to participate in the game of cricket.

A particular person to thank this morning is Peter Elliot. Peter is the co-ordinator of the Milo “Have a Go” cricket program that the Club runs on Saturday mornings. It had over …. registrations this season. This program commences the journey of five to eight year olds to the “baggy green”. We wish them well. But the journey wouldn’t have started this year without Peter. We thank him also for volunteering to co-ordinate the program next season.

Club registrations were down this year, a theme reflected across the Northern Districts Junior Cricket Association. We fielded eight teams – one under 10 “Average Cricket” team and seven competitive sides. Each age group was represented however.

It almost wasn’t – a slightly under numbered U12 side was stitched together in the final hours before team registrations were due. Extra arms were twisted after this time. This didn’t stop the team going on to be undefeated premiers.

Our U15 side, performed well all season, made the final but could not replicate the previous years success. Congratulations to both sides for their efforts and results.

As I mentioned before the Club is for the players but the game won’t happen without kits, uniforms, trophies, administration and co-ordination. Thanks to the Committee, in particular our secretary, Paul Doddridge; Peter Macourt; our treasurer; Sandra Holden, uniforms and trophies; Peter Trickett, for maintaining our equipment and Stephen Fry, our Communications officer.

My thanks must go to my wife, Rosemary, for her support and patience over the year. She also has done a lot to keep the Club’s business moving.

To finish, special thanks from the Club to Andrew Grey, coach of the Under 16s who finishes a long association with the Club. Thank you, Andrew and all the best. Peter Dwyer President Epping District Cricket Club - Juniors

Special Awards

Senior Club Cricketer of the Year (U15-U16) - Julian Banks Julian was the star all rounder in the Club in the senior age groups. He usually keeps wicket, but occasionally sheds the gloves, to bowl with speed and accuracy. Usually opening the batting, he scored two unbeaten fifties, and averaged 43.3, while he took 9 wickets for 57 (average 6.3) in just 20 overs, an excellent strike rate. He also took 11 catches, some very sharp, and when asked to captain the side did a very fine job.

Intermediate Club Cricketer of the Year (U13-U14) - Tom Ware Tom scored 486 runs at an average of 44.18. This included five half centuries and one century. He figured in many large partnerships with his team mates. Tom was equal highest in the catching department with six catches. In bowling he took six wickets and when keeping two stumpings.

Junior Club Cricketer of the Year (U11-U12) - Alex Maguire This award is to a cricketer who not only had individual all round high performance but also a player who learnt the difficult art of captaincy well, leading his team to a comprehensive win in the Grand Final. His team were UNDEFEATED PREMIERS. Alex took 35 wickets for 125 runs at an average of 3.57 runs per wicket. As a mainstay middle order batsman Alex scored 296 runs in 7 innings (2 no) at an average of 59.2 runs per innings. In addition, Alex was a committed fieldsman taking 10 catches. He was a Centurion with 107 n.o against YMCA. A young player who will go a lot further should he maintain his desire to achieve.

Spirit of Cricket Award - Tynan O’Shea Tynan is a live-wire. He likes to field in so close he can count the batsman’s pimples, and he is a jack-in-the-box, ready to spring fearlessly to take a catch. He bowls with a great leap in the air in his delivery stride, which we cannot coach out of him. He bats fearlessly, too. Against St Patrick’s, Tynan tried to hook his third ball, which went through his visor and cut his eye. After a swift trip to Concord Emergency (“I’ll have stitches please, not tissue glue, because I want the biggest scar”), Tynan returned to continue his innings.

EDCC-J Encouragement Award - Thomas Nguyen Thomas was voted the clubs prestigious Encouragement Award on the basis that, last year in his first season of cricket, in seven innings, he did not score any runs. This year Thomas comes out and scores 205 runs, including his first half century. This is a mammoth improvement for any batsman, and his example gives genuine encouragement to other club members who struggled with the bat this year.

Milo Have A Go Cricket

Another successful year of Milo HAG Cricket and one that I have enjoyed immensely. We had 54 registered player this year, only one down on last year. There were 9 in the oldest group and some have indicated an interest in progressing on to the aged cricket. On average we had 45 attending each week The year started wet with the first session washed out, this however gave us the opportunity to complete the new registration form that had arrived after registration had been completed. We completed the first session on 14 December with a skills competition. The results from this are attached. The season recommenced on 8 February and was completed on 1 March with a modified game involving the parents and a morning tea with the presentation of certificates and goods from Milo. This year the goods included a good quality bat, Milo hat, Cricket ball and an excellent computer CD from Cricket Australia. Very good value for money!. Nestle supported us in the form of sachets of Milo also. Again we had excellent support from parents during the season, without them I would be very busy. Also I would like to thank Peter Dwyer and the committee of the Epping District Cricket Club Juniors for their support during the year. On a final note I have learned much this year about the running of the HAG scheme and look forward to putting it to good use next season. Peter Elliott Coordinator HAG Cricket

Under 10

Only one Under 10’s team was fielded this year and so we were lucky to have 14 very keen players who stayed loyal to their team for the whole season. There were only four players from last year so it was a steep learning curve for all concerned.

I am sure that all players and parents alike would agree that the team really came together to train well, play well and above all support each other’s efforts. A trait that will see them all enjoy and appreciate their cricket for many years to come.

With such a large team it was necessary to rotate all players throughout the season and the upside of this was that it gave everyone a chance to open both batting and bowling at some stage. Each player was also given the opportunity to captain the team, performing the toss and electing to bat or field.

The team had some great games, some rather convincing wins and also others that came down the last over of play. Overall it was a very successful season with all players improving and consolidating their individual game as well as showing great teamwork. Amartya Bose Amartya batted and ran well with Nikhil, showing great teamwork. He also showed a lot of courage in the field – going for every ball. As the youngest member of the team he has a great future. Well done! Bowling: 6 for 108 Batting Average: 12.12 Mitchell Gerdes A promising all-rounder whose improvement in bowling and fielding in particular stood out. Always keen for a wicket Mitchell narrowly missed out on two hat-tricks during the season. His straight-arm in the field also handy for those run-outs. Bowling: 12 for 69 Batting Average: 38 Nagi Haeder Always keen and had another good season. He continues to improve, and who will never forget his determination in keeping his wicket against that tight match against Berala. Bowling: 3 for 59 Batting Average: 16.6

James Howes A great all-rounder – with some fantastic catches close to the wicket. James is also a keen and competent wicket keeper. He is an aggressive fast bowler and showed solid batting skills. His leadership and sportsmanship shone throughout the season. Bowling: 16 for 77 Batting Average: 18.6 Christian Howes Cricket runs in the family. Christian’s all-round efforts throughout the year, particularly his bowling and fielding (some amazing catches), made him a valuable member of the team. Well done! Bowling: 2 for 68 Batting Average: 42.6 Jamie Muscat Jamie proved to be a valuable senior member of the team. In the field he is a consistent, economical spin bowler, has great glovework behind the wicket and a straight arm for runouts. He is also an aggressive batsman making each ground look small. Bowling: 6 for 46 Batting Average: 55 Vidu Perere One of the younger members of the team, Vidu showed great improvement over the season in both batting and bowing and has developed a very sound defensive technique. Bowling: 4 for 56 Batting Average: 12.5 Marco Rocak Definitely our quiet achiever. Marco gained confidence throughout the season to finish with some great fielding and batting exploits. Who could forget that four against Epping YMCA! Bowling: 1 for 60 Batting Average: 6.7 Nikhil Seranatne Left hand batsman who constantly improved throughout the season. Teaming well with Amartya for some aggressive running between the wickets. He is also a promising bowler. Bowling: 3 for 92 Batting Average: 17.5

Curtis Sironen Excellent year and proved to be a great all-round player. Curtis is a demon fast bowler, a very keen batter and a most valuable fielder on the boundary – certain 4’s were kept to 1’s and even 0’s. His enthusiasm and support for his team members is commendable. Bowling: 14 for 57 Batting Average: 51.5 Ramanan Rajkumar A keen cricketer, whose game and confidence improved throughout the season. His bowling in particular got stronger and straighter with ultimate success. Bowling: 6 for 71 Batting Average: 10.87 Subash Shankera Narayan A very keen player who was determined to improve each week especially his batting and running between wickets. Subash was always keen to take part in each aspect of the game and enjoyed his opportunities to wicket keep. Bowling: 2 for 97 Batting Average: 7.7 Sean Thompson A very good first year in average cricket. Sean showed great enthusiasm and improvement in his bowling in particular…..a solid batsman and always chased the ball hard in the field. Enjoyed his turns at wicket keeping as well. Bowling: 6 for 101 Batting Average: 32.25 Lachlan Wraith Having not played cricket before, a great first season and should be well satisfied with his achievements. Lachlan has developed into a solid batsman, with bowling on the improve. Bowling: 5 for 66 Batting Average: 23

Under 11 Red Our 6th place in the competition belies the ability & vast improvement this team made

during 2002/03. This team included 8 boys who will still be eligible to play in this age group next season, (2 with two years still in 11 years) yet finished the year with the second best bowling average and third best batting average in the competition! From this you can understand why the coach, managers & parents believed the year to be successful. The aim with so many ‘under age’ players was to have fun & thus ensure all boys play cricket again next season, give everybody equal opportunities to improve their technique & learn more about the game. With this in mind we continually rotated batting & bowling orders. The enthusiasm & willingness to learn has certainly seen the skills of all boys improve remarkably. The experience gained this year will see these boys develop into a very strong team or individuals in coming seasons. While the team’s strengths lay in their bowling and fielding, the fact that they lost an average of only 5.3 wickets per innings (in 11 innings they were only ever bowled out twice -once when we were short of players) shows the team batted with good technique & valued their wickets highly. Towards the end of the year the batting run rates increased as running between wickets & shot selection improved. This augers well for next year……larger totals will see their natural bowling & fielding ability win more matches.

The team should be very proud of the development made this season. They have been

a very easy group to coach due to their easy going characters, very good behaviour & support from the parents. Tim Alice Shows plenty of all-round potential. Tim batted through the innings for 40 in his first game with the club, showing great determination & concentration. Tim was very unlucky with his bowling as he constantly pitches up and invariably beat the bat. Unfortunately the wickets didn’t always fall his way…..keep up the pace, line & length & he’ll get loads of wickets in the future. Excellent in any fielding position. James Allsopp Our wicketkeeper this year….tough job at this age, but handled with great aplomb. James’ batting will improve as he gets older as shown by the fact that he was involved in the highest partnership of the year (87 vs. Epping Blue). James happily batted high up the order on several occasions & will benefit from this experience, particularly in the middle order against bowlers of his age. Great competitor who loves the game…..a real team player. Evan Danilo Plays his cricket with great gusto….batting, bowling or fielding. Evan started the year attempting to hit every ball through mid-wicket. By year-end he had developed a more patient attitude towards shot selection without affecting his ability to hit the ball hard. Evan certainly punished anything short of a length & hit our only six of the season against Oakhill. His top score was 31. Evan has a perfect physique to develop into a fast/medium pace bowling & this certainly began to come to the fore in the later stages of the year. Evan has a “great pair of hands” and took 4 catches.

Alex Fry Top score of the year 48 vs. Oakhill saw Alex realise that he could actually bat. His form after Christmas was excellent and he is developing into a punishing batsmen. This improvement can be put down to a tighter defence mixed with his usual aggressive style. Alex also showed steady improvement with his bowling, as his confidence grew during the year. Once Alex learns to concentrate in the field, his game will be very strong in all departments. He is set for some big seasons in the future. Mitchell Horrocks Has enjoyed a very good year - 124 runs @ 24.80 and 9 wickets. Mitchell is a very stylish batsman who this year began to play the ball into gaps & dispatch bad balls. He plays as well as anyone in the competition off the back foot, especially through covers. Mitch will be a complete player once he tightens his forward defence & learns to work the ball off his pads. Mitch took wickets when he pitched the ball up to batsmen 7 doesn’t attempt to bowl too fast. Well done Mitch, a very good year. David Lavender David is an extremely keen cricketer who is willing to learn & not frightened to ask questions if things go astray….a great attitude. David was very timid at the start of the season but has grown in confidence & developed his skills, particularly bowling. David took a spectacular caught & bowled vs. Epping Blue that reflected his determination & potential. His line & length is way, way ahead of last year and will continue to improve, as he grows stronger. David had limited batting opportunities as he played only to Christmas. He needs to understand that he can say “NO” when running between wickets!! Good luck in the future David, your enthusiasm & positive attitude no matter what the circumstances will be missed. Simon Macourt Simon was our leader run maker & finished with the highest batting average – 136 runs @ 34. Simon was probably frustrated at his many scores in the 30’s during the year, but his talent will see big scores come in the next few years. Simon’s batting went up a step this year, as he scored runs all around the ground. He plays strongly of his pads but enjoys nothing more than playing the cut shot. Simon has learnt how to build an innings & his running between wickets is an example for the rest of the team. Simon seemed to bowling a little quicker this year & he finished with 8 wickets, conceding only 2.86 runs per over. Simon reads the game very well & has a great understanding of the way a game is developing for someone his age.

Jake McCarthy Another of the boy’s who played up in a higher age group. Jake joined the club this year and shows potential with both ball & bat. On many occasions he came on and broke dangerous partnerships with steady line & length bowling. James has also shown great determination with the bat and he worked very hard at training & in matches to build a strong defensive technique. As he grows stronger this will be a solid platform to develop a more aggressive run scoring batting style. Jake is a boy who is willing to listen & learn. He has come on in huge strides during the year.

Angus McWhirter Angus showed this year he has plenty of potential. His top score was 14n.o, and it was during this innings that Angus showed that he could bat & build an innings, something he lacked confidence in being able to do. Angus can be his hardest critic, and sometimes tries too hard. He can score runs and should take a more aggressive approach as his confidence builds. He also was our wicketkeeper when James was unavailable or needed a break….this is an area of his game he should pursue as he shows good basic techniques. Robbie Milledge We only enjoyed Rob’s abilities for half a season due to school sport commitments in the new year. In that time however Robbie showed that he is a very special all-round cricketer. Rob took 10 wickets @ 3.50 & conceded a miserly 1.59 runs an over, all from only 22 overs! He also enjoyed the best bowling of the season with 5 for 1, with 4 bowled. Rob is able to do this through consistent line & length bowling, all generated from a smooth run up & delivery. When batting Robbie is a very determined player who values his wicket greatly. His batting is based on a sound defensive technique & ability to place the balls in gaps. When he develops his strength, look out! Our loss will certainly be Barker College’s gain. Gavin Pinto This was Gavin’s first year of cricket. He has shown vast improvement by year- end and frustrated many opposition bowlers with his ability to protect his wicket. More runs will be scored as he develops and gains experience. Gavin was involved in the highest 4th wicket partnership of the season. He has shown great determination to improve his batting; we look forward to his bowling and fielding stepping up next year. Gavin could always be relied upon to keep the boys and the coach on their toes with his comments on & off the field….a real character who was a very popular team member. Vishan Wijeyaratne Vishan was our leading wicket taker with 13 wickets @ 7.38 and 2.91 runs per over. Vishan has a very smooth bowling action and bowls at the stumps…a very useful ability at this age. His all-round abilities can be seen with his batting average of 30.50 (second highest). Vishan also took 3 catches to add to his reputation. Vishan obviously contributed greatly to the team, and will only improve as his confidence & strength develop. Nic Wilson Generally looked at for his bowling ability (9 wickets @ 10.3 and 2.82 runs per over), Nic showed with the teams second top score of 47 & his involvement in the highest partnership of the year that he also has the potential to develop into a strong left-handed batsmen. Nic certainly gives 100% in his fielding, his throwing and ground fielding was excellent all year & a great example to his teammates.

Under 11 Blue Under 11 Blue was formed from most of last year’s Under 10 Blue side with a few “first-

timers” and a couple from Have-A-Go. Although this, for all of them, was their first year in competitive cricket, the differences between average cricket and this were overcome quite quickly and the team set to work learning each others game at training and during the early rounds.

The season certainly got off to a flying start with a comprehensive victory in Round 1,

but it was to take a further 8 rounds before we registered our next win, but it must be said, that that victory was our sweetest moment, for up until that time, our opponents were undefeated. This seemed to whet the appetite of the team because we won again the next round and the season ended up being quite a good one netting 3 wins, 5 losses and a draw. A great effort for a team in their first year.

All players are young enough to play in the Under 11 competition next year, so if they

consolidate their excellent effort and improvement that they displayed during the season just completed, they will be a very competitive side next year.

Braden Cheng A natural cricketer who continued to improve this year after a very solid grounding in Under 10’s last year. A talented shot-maker with no real weaknesses in his batting always picked up the scoring rate when at the crease and had 2 scores of over 50 not out. When bowling always delivered the ball on an excellent line and length netting him a 4 wicket haul twice. Alex Carpenter

Started off the year with a flying 52 not out but struggled to attain this standard after that. Displays all the shots, however is susceptible to bowling that is on target. Once his defence improves, the scores will start rolling in again. Great little change bowler who displayed excellent improvement throughout the season. Will be one to watch as he matures. Matheesha Gunaratne A beautiful batsman who was the backbone of every batting innings. Particularly strong on the off side square of the wicket, but scored runs everywhere else too. Although not a fast scorer, could always be relied upon to net a big score. Mostly used as a change bowler, he never missed out on a wicket in any match. A great team player. Tim Wareham Opening bowler with a beautiful fast-bowling action who was always amongst the wickets. Very handy batsman who always got off to a start, but most of the time got out before he could post a big score. Still and all, ended up with a handy average and, when the chips were down, could be relied upon to turn the game around with a quick wicket or two.

Rahul Mooray A natural cricketer with a particular talent in fielding. Naturally athletic, he shows great hands, enabling him to hold catches that anyone else would not get near. Very handy bowler who picked up 3 in 4 balls once. Once his defence improves, and the big scores start coming, Rahul will be the complete cricketer. Alexandra Doddridge One of two girls in the team, Alexandra had a little trouble adapting to competitive cricket but continued undaunted. Her bowling netted her one wicket for the season but, once she achieves a consistent line and length, will get her plenty more. A disappointing season with the bat netted her 1 run. David Reynolds First year in under 11 for this player. Had limited opportunities with the bat but managed to get off the mark every time, providing good support whilst other players posted good scores. Although his tallies were never big, he managed to hang around for quite some time. Bowling will improve as his action gets more upright. Thimira Gunasekera Another player in his first year of competitive cricket who had difficulty coping with some good bowling. Managed to remain not out on a couple of occasions and will improve as he matures and develops a little more upper body strength. Handy little medium pacer who was unlucky not to be amongst the wickets. Dulitha Kumarasinghe Handy little all-rounder who was always there when needed. Chimed in with a couple of handy little knocks as well as a wicket on several occasions. A medium pacer whose qualities of a good line and length got better as the season wore on. Justin Hendry An elegant little batsman who continued to improve throughout the season. This was his first year up from Have-a-Go and the straight bat defence that he showed at times, indicate a batsman of some merit. Although not among the wickets, he bowled his fair share of overs for not that many runs. Jessica Thompson In her first season up from Have-A-Go, Jessica faired quite well with the bat, getting involved in a number of successful partnerships, and her best innings of 7 was cut short by a most unfortunate umpiring decision. Her bowling will improve once she gets her action a little more side on.

Maneshan Mendis A medium pace bowler with a very unorthodox action that proved effective on at least one occasion. Although he never posted a big score off the bat, he was involved in some good partnerships down the order. The highlight of the season was when he took an absolutely wonderful catch in the outfield off a beautifully hit lofted drive. Rohan Reddy A handy little batsman who never failed to get off the mark and hold his end up in a few good partnerships. Rohan’s bowling will improve as he matures and his upper body strength increases, but nevertheless, bowled some good spells while he was on. Jack Philp A late starter for the season, joining the side in Round 3, but quickly settled in to become an integral member of the team. Our regular wicketkeeper who threw himself headlong at every ball that came near him to end up taking 4 catches for the season. Very handy with the bat too.

Under 12 West

This cricket season will be remembered as one of excellence. Epping Districts completely dominated the competition winning all of its games - 3 outright and 5 on 1st Innings.

Whilst there were some consistent stand out players, every member of the team had a ‘star’ performance in at least one game, proving the value of a champion team effort.

Improvements were made by all players in all facets of their games. Effort, good sportsmanship, positive attitude to training and a good team spirit were contributing factors which characterised this outstanding team.

Epping Districts thoroughly deserved to be UNDEFEATED PREMIERS. The team scored 1,626 runs and lost only 55 wickets at an average of 29.56 runs per wicket. In stark contrast to our competitors total runs scored against our team wre 698. We took 105 wickets at an amazing average of 6.65 runs per wick. These statistics are even further embellished when considering the team only ever batted once in every game.

Our bowling dominance is seen with our best performances being bowling out our opposition sides for 14,12,18,13,26,40, 53 and 63. In contrast our best batting performances were 2 for 124 in t he grand final, 3 for 290, 8 for 177, 3 for 149, 9 for 297, 8 for 258, and 3 for 227.

I am extremely proud of each player. Special thanks to Brenda McCullough as Manager, Paul Maguire as official scorer and the parents of the boys who were so wonderfully supportive. Alex Maguire Genuinely quick opening bowler and hard hitting middle order batsman. Alex was a ‘shock’ bowler feared by opposition sides. When bowling with rythmn had speed and deviation off the wicket that could tear the opposition batting lineup apart. As a batsman he socred his runs quickly and learnt the art of placement. Sound hands in the field with 10 catches, team leader as Captain and was a CENTURIAN. Brad Lewis Accurate opening swing bowler who took many top order wickets for few runs. As a left arm bowler he bowled with good line and length and particularly troubled right hand batsman with his in-swinging ‘yorker’. Averaging in the mid forties as a left hand batsman he learnt proper shot selection and technique and was a CENTURIAN. Angus Trickett A right hand batsman who will improve next year due to his fierce commitment. Has learnt the art of defence and values his wicket. A good performer in the field with some great catches. His right arm medium pace bowling was solid and he took wickets at crucial stages in our matches. Has the capacity to be a good all rounder.

Akshay Rao An excellent leg spin bowler who came on to bowl at mostly middle order batsman. Performed well capturing wickets by deception, good field placements and team catches. Fielded with commitment and was a most enthusiastic team member. His batting was far better than his statistics indicate and he will continue to make improvements. Senduran Ramalingam A genuine all rounder who bolstered both our bowling and batting line up. Improved significantly as a top order batsman and featured in many critical partnerships. Was a consistent performer with his right arm medium pace and contributed well in the field. Simon Davis Opened the batting on most occasions and invariably got the team off to a good start. His technique has improved during the season. A feature of his batting was his ability to take quick singles thereby rotating the strike. Fielded in close-in positions and took some truly excellent catches. A good change bowler able to trouble batsman with his fuller pitched deliveries. Chris Highfield A determined player whose statistics do not reflect his commitment. Made significant improvement with his batting and was a good off spin bowler often turning the ball sharply. As a fieldsman Chris again was a dramatic improver and in one innings took four catches. His good nature, determination, and eagerness to constantly improve will stand him in good stead for the future. Bikram Singh Certainly our most improved player in all aspects of the game. Worked extremely hard on his batting and bowling skills both at practice and at home. Bikram has a fine attitude, always wanting to be involved. He is a hard hitting batsman with improving technique and a very useful right arm medium pace bowler. Developed into a valuable fieldsman and took some remarkable catches at backward square. Sean Ellicot The teams most versatile player. Able to bat both as an opener or in the middle order. He scored consistently well. Performed the role of a back up wicket keeper and bowled with great accuracy especially in the second half of the season. Was the only bowler to take 5 wickets in an innings - 5 for 2 off 1.5 overs. Sean was keen to improve, self monitoring his personal best achievements. Lincoln Downes Always tried hard. Took on the role of wicket keeper and showed courage and determination. He batted well on most occasions and lifted the whole team with an important innings of 30. A confidence player wo can improve with practice.

Matt Benco Our ‘team man’ award winner. Was always at training and at games. Had a great attitude and team commitment. Featured in an important opening batting partnership and tried hard in the field James Papworth ‘Run Maker - Run Saver’’. Was a technically sound top order batsman who was able to bat with controlled agression. A stroke player rather than a hitter he was able to accumulate runs very quickly due to his excellent running between wickets and good placement. Was a most valuable player in the batting order. Only dismissed once and finished with an impressive average of 176. Contributed significantly as wicket keeper and displayed courage to play when injured.

Under 13 East Epping U13 East enjoyed their cricket season. The core of the team have been playing together for a few seasons now and this knowledge of each other helped to pull the team together whenever the going got tough out on the field. The players would like to publicly acknowledge the support of Craig who umpires each game and Mohan who scores each game. Valuable coaching assistance on bowling technique and shot selection by Lyndon will ensure that individual players will be better prepared for the next season. Robbie Colbourne Robbie continued to be a leading player within the team. His contribution with the ball was of a high standard. He bowled 93 overs for the team and was the leading wicket taker. Robbie struggled with the bat in the earlier part of the season but stuck to it and came good again at the end. Tristan Dimmock Tristan is our Vice Captain and his leadership skills are greatly appreciated by the team. Tristan worked on his run up through out the season in order to take his bowling to a higher level. Many a batsman could be seen backing off when everything came together. Tristan was our second highest wicket taker, and his attacking batting style took him to the third highest batting average. Prasadh Mohanathasan Prasadh continued to weave his bowling magic much to the displeasure of opposing batsmen. His highlights were the dismissals of the leading batsman in the competition, in both games with Carlingford. His batting was very valuable at the end of innings. He valued his wicket and was out only once in the season. Abinay Yarraputu Abinav was again a leading player in our team. His all round ability with both bat and ball is evident. Most valuable however was his ability to form partnerships with many different team mates when out in the middle. Abinav also shared the catching honours with six catches. Matthew Toole Matthew practiced and improved his bowling, during the season, to take the bowling averages honours. His batting technique also improved and we’re sure a big score is just around the corner. Matthew proved a very valuable and popular player as the season unfolded. Phillip Miller Phillip was a new player to the team, and a new player to the game of cricket. He came with enthusiasm, cricketing ability, and a willingness to learn and practice. His raw talent was evident early on when he hit his highest score of 33 against Carlingford. With his bowling Phillip demonstrated an ability to bowl both medium pace and spin.

Steven Mallin Steven figured in many partnerships for the team. He hit over 100 runs for the season and never gave his wicket up without a fight. His all round ability saw him bowl as well as wicket keep. Tom Dimmock Tom had his best season ever. He was confident with the bat and his bowling is just coming good. It was clear to see that he was enjoying the game of cricket and his team mates. With practice a big batting score is just around the corner. Tom Ware Tom is our captain and demonstrated a willingness to lead from the front. His batting often took the team to a competitive score, or dug the team out of a tough situation. He developed partnerships in his batting with each team member. When our bowlers had trouble removing a difficult batsman, Tom would often step up. Curtis Dwyer Curtis loves cricket. This was his second season and his improvement and enthusiasm is evident for all to see. He loves to be involved in the game and always had his hand up to open the batting, wicket keep, or field every where, there is a rumour that he is so keen that one day he tried to wicket keep off his own bowling. Jeevan Hartharan Jeevan is the most friendly and confident cricketer we have ever met. He has an enthusiasm for the game, that combined with practice, will take him further. Amay Boota Amay was a late starter to the season, and unfortunately the season ended just as he was coming into some consistency with his game. Amay is a keen cricketer that is looking forward to next season. Thomas Nguyen Thomas’s cricket improved significantly this year. His batting improved to a standard that he hit over 200 runs for the season, and figured in many batting partnerships with his team mates. In the bowling department his bowling also improved to the extent that he was second in the bowling averages.

Under 14 East

It was always going to be a big job repeating the results of season 2001-02,and so it proved with the promotion to the ‘East’ competition following the win in the finals last year. The competition was several levels higher than the previous season and the team had changed composition as well. What hadn’t changed was the sportsmanship of the boys, and for the most part, the willingness to compete even in the face of tough competition. The first half of the season was a learning experience and a struggle to find form in the first innings of a match rather than the second. The second round was a different proposition, with much improved performances, and while that first victory remained out of reach till the last game the signs were there to see. Carlingford felt the heat in the last game when Epping wrought revenge for a first innings loss in a badly rain affected game in the first round.

A strong finish to the season, with many players showing great personal improvement, which bodes well for 2003-04. Andrew Alice After starting the season batting for considerable time to build an innings, but without the return of runs, Andrew took a more aggressive approach in the latter games and was rewarded with his best score (43), and a share of the best 7th wicket partnership. He is always reliable with the ball, with the second best average, and wickets taken, usually opening the bowling as part of what was still one of the better opening attacks in the competition. Always athletic in the field he took a classic catch in the match against St Pat’s. Tom Coleman The team’s leading wicket-taker was also one of the most frugal, conceding fewer runs per over than all but one other bowler, and with the best average. Always presenting a challenge to opposing batsmen Tom opened the bowling and often the batting as well, showing the extent of his talents. He combined with Chris Wilson to post the team’s highest opening partnership for the season , and bagged three catches in the field, to round off a good season. Eric Conliffe The top scoring batsman of last season’s final, maintained his forceful batting style this season, but the quality of the opposition fielding this year denied him of the same returns. Always a powerful hitter of the ball, Eric, like many of his teammates, batted almost anywhere in the order, as the game required. Although his swing left him at times during the season, he bowled with aggression and collected 3 wickets for the year, as well as holding onto 2 catches.

Jack Dwyer. Leading by example is Jack’s approach and it was never more evident than this season, particularly in the batting department. 118 runs for the season, placed him third in the run making stakes, but his innings were often gritty affairs, in trying circumstances. This is reflected in his part in 3 of the best partnerships for the season. Although suffering some knee problems during the season, he remained one of the better bowlers, and collected the best figures in an innings (4/26) of any bowler. Always among the best in the field with good anticipation and a strong arm. Tim Ireland Tim’s bowling surprised many batsmen this season, frequently tying them up, with fast, accurate deliveries on the stumps, leaving no room for error. He was unlucky not to get a wicket, but certainly contributed to the pressure on the batsmen. With the bat, Tim remains a powerful player, and featured in three of the best partnerships of the season. Just to show his versatility, those appeared from 2nd wicket to 10th wicket, and all in double figures. Chris Mason A new recruit for the season, Chris applied his enthusiasm in training and the games. His batting was the most improved aspect of his game by the end of the season, and he scored his first run in the second last game, but his contribution went beyond the runs scored, to a handy partnership with Pat Wanigasekara, by blocking the opening bowlers for two overs. Josh Martis Another new player to the team this season, Josh applied his natural abilities well with the bat, and particularly with the ball, finishing the season with the lowest runs conceded per over, of all the team. His spinners have surprising bounce and turn and he used them to good effect, particularly in the second half of the year, unlucky not to gather more than the one wicket. His batting also improved, sufficient to allow him to share the best 8th wicket partnership with Chris Wilson. In the field he took 2 fine catches. Ben Muscat Ben continued to torment bowlers this season with one of the best “eyes” in the game. Putting the ball on a full length on the stumps, against Ben’s unorthodox back-swing was no protection from being despatched with great power virtually anywhere forward of the wicket. He mixed a more discerning approach with his natural power, to feature in the highest partnership for any wicket for the team this season. His bowling also improved by great strides this year, in accuracy and pace, built largely on a new ,balanced run up, rewarding him with six wickets. 2 catches capped off a terrific season.

Pat O’Brien One of the most improved batsmen of the year, Pat was also flexible, batting from the openers position to down the order. Always quick between the wickets, Pat looked for the opportunity to turn a 1 into 2, or 2 into 3, and usually did so. With 110runs for the season, Pat ranked 4th in the batting order of merit, and was part of the best5th wicket partnership, of 43.Limited opportunities with the ball didn’t mask the fact that his skidding deliveries held danger for the unwary batsman. Kapil Vaswani Kapil is one of the team’s quiet achievers, always reliable for a 100% effort in either his batting or bowling. His resolute batting against some fairly hostile bowling especially against St Pats in the second round, helped keep the team in the game for longer than the opponents hoped. His usually tidy medium pacers met with some talented batsmen this season and denied him more than the one wicket, however, in the field he was like a magnet, catching three beauties. Pat Wanigasekara The third of the new faces in the team, Pat brought a handy combination of batting and bowling skills to the team. A slow start to the batting at the start of the season, against tough opposition, Pat showed dogged defence, and was rewarded for his more aggressive 2nd half approach, with a share of the best 9th wicket stand. His best bowling (1/25) came in the most difficult wet conditions of the season, when he had control missing from most other bowlers. Chris Wilson Possibly his best season in competitive cricket, Chris featured with the bat, recording the highest individual score of any of the batsmen (53), and highest average. Batting anywhere from opener to number 9, Chris played a part in no less than 5 of the best partnerships of the season, none of them less than 23. As the regular glove-man, behind the stumps, he shared those duties with Pat O’Brien and others towards the end of season, and as a result got an opportunity with the ball, most notably in the last match when he recorded 3/2.3 catches for the season, 2 as keeper.

We did not have quite enough players for 2 teams, so we had a squad of 15, and some boys had to miss matches they wanted to play. This made continuity difficult. Nevertheless, this was another highly successful season. Epping Districts had won the previous 4 Grand Finals at this age group. Although we made the Final again, we lost to Epping YMCA in a one-sided game, although we did well to fight back at the end of the game (to have them 7 for 37 in the 2nd innings). The team spirit was excellent, and the boys (and sometimes the coach) enjoyed training. We look forward eagerly to 2004. Andrew Athavale Andrew had an excellent all round season, starring with the ball to take as many wickets as anyone, and turning in solid performances as a batsman, often opening the innings, and as a fielder. Julian Banks Julian was the outstanding performer in the team. He scored two half centuries, kept wicket well and took off his gloves to bowl with great effect, taking 9 wickets in just 20 overs. Hugh Brompton Hugh was in hospital with a bad back at the end of last season, and was understandably tentative at the start of the season. But he grew in confidence, hitting the ball harder than anyone, and bowling with speed and swing in the last few games. Steve Crowcroft Steve had a wonderful season with the bat, narrowly missing his maiden century, scoring three fifties in all, and averaging over 50. He also bowled and fielded well, and captained with increasing confidence, including the Final. David Curiskis David had another solid all-round season, taking 10 wickets, and making some runs, although he had fewer opportunities than last year. Nic Esdaile Nic enjoyed his first season of cricket, and we enjoyed Nic’s infectious enthusiasm. He had limited opportunities to shine, and yet never lost his smile or the bounce in his step. Ruvan Fernando Ruvan’s bowling was as economical and effective as ever. He also fielded brilliantly, challenging Steve as our outstanding out-fielder, and scored valuable runs.

Pratik Gidwani Pratik’s bowling was a revelation. With his bouncy run-up, and looping action, he took wickets all season, joining Andrew as equal leading wicket taker, and making the team for the Final on merit. Richard Holden The most memorable moment of the season was Richard reaching his century against the strong St Patrick’s team by hitting both the last two balls of our allotted overs for six. He was also the most economic of the bowlers. We will miss him next season. Mark Isaacs Mark opened with an unbeaten 50, then had one of his quieter seasons. His bowling figures suffered from being used to buy wickets against the leading opponents and a few dropped catches, while his batting average suffered from running himself out twice in a row against YMCA. Nihal Koshy Nihal too had a quiet season. He is a very good player, bowling with accuracy and sometimes with lightning speed and fielding very well. He is shy of batting, although always impresses with his elegant style when he can be persuaded to wield the willow. Tynan O’Shea Tynan is renowned for his enthusiasm and verve. A great team member, liked by the whole team, Tynan bowls, bats, fields and trains with abundant, and sometimes over-abundant energy. Rashmin Peiris After the promise of last season, Rashmin did not quite live up to expectations. He is an excellent batsman, with a very good eye, but always gets out caught. He needs to learn to curb his attacking nature early on, and build an innings. His bowling continues to be fast and accurate. Robert Petrovic Robert is another of life’s enthusiasts, always ther at training, and enjoying his cricket to the full. Robert made his best ever score, then beat it a couple of matches later, a great effort. Naseer Yussouf Nass is one of life’s gentlemen, a quiet achiever who gets on with it and never complains. He took more catches than anyone, bowled very well and scored some important runs.

This has been a year in which each of the boys has contributed whole heartedly to the performance on the field. With injuries and absences scattered throughout the season the boys often found themselves filling unexpected roles, often with pleasing success, e.g. we used 4 wicket keepers and 6 opening batsmen.

The season started with 7 close one day games, but unfortunately it was sometimes difficult, later in the season, for the batsmen to remember that they were now playing a two day game. The bowling and teamwork in the field continued its steady improvement with one memorable catch being taken by a second fieldsman after being dropped by another.

This is the boys’ last year with Epping Juniors. It has been a pleasure and an honour to have been involved with this group of boys as they matured and developed both as cricketers and the individuals that they are. My thanks to them, and to their parents who have acted as scorers, managers, umpires, Saturday morning transport slaves, answerers of telephones, etc, and have helped to make this team possible. I wish all the boys the best for their future.

Andrew Gray, Coach. Dean Thomson Captain for the year, he was always positive and aggressive in his approach to each game. He was fascinatingly unpredictable on the rare occasions when we won the toss. An adventurous, hard hitting batsman he led by example in the pursuit of quick runs, with high scores of 45 and 35no and finishing the season with 206 runs at an average of 17. His well flighted spin bowling was thoughtful and skilful and he finished the season with 15 wickets. In the field there was seldom a game when he could not be seen throwing himself after the ball. He took 5 catches and once, skillfully, managed to drop a catch into Robert’s hands. Bharan Narula Our first choice wicket keeper who missed half the season through injury. He took 4 catches and it was pleasing to watch his growth in confidence and leg side keeping skills. A stylish and graceful batsman, being run out after accidentally bumping into the bowler in the last match of the season seems to sum up his batting luck. He scored 87 runs in the season with an average of 14.5 Mandeep Singh One of the all round players who were the back bone of the team. Strong and forceful as a batsman, her featured in highest wicket partnerships for the first 4 wickets, with a high score of 50 and two innings in the 40s. In the season he scored 271 runs at an average of 20.8. He opened the bowling, and his probing bowling always slowed down the batsmen and kept them watching carefully. He finished the season with 17 wickets. He is one of those fieldsmen equally good in the deep as in the close who continually inspires the other members of the team.

Kapil Bazil He’d do anything: open the batting, bowl, wicket keep, bat in the lower order, and look graceful doing it. His calmness, good footwork and sound defence were a pleasure to see. He played a significant part in several sound and steadying partnerships at important moments with Sam and Robert. His bowling became an important part of the team’s performance as he grew in confidence and he finished with 7 wickets and a best of 3-28. Harry Neville-Towles A useful cricketer, Harry was another who could bat anywhere from opener to well down in the batting line up. He featured in a 41 run 8th wicket partnership and had a highest score of 21 no.His fielding and catching (3 catches) showed a marked improvement throughout the year. An occasional bowler this year, he finished the season with 2 wickets. Andrew Macourt An inspirational player who unfortunately could not play the whole season because of school commitments. He is dedicated and whole hearted in everything he does. His batting was thoughtful and aggressive and he finished the season with 190 runs at an average of 23.8 and a high score of 56no. His bowling was always dangerous and sometimes quite fast, and he finished the season with 17 wickets at an average of 17.8. With a strong, accurate throwing arm and quick reflexes he is a wonderful fielder always ready to pounce. He finished the season with 5 catches, 4 of them in the one innings. Ritik Kaul New to the club this season, Ritik was a dedicated player who gained in confidence and skills as the season developed. Batting in the lower order his defence became stronger and he was often hard to dismiss. With his bowling, he took the odd wicket, and often caused the batsmen to rethink their approach. He finished the season with 5 wickets and an average of 19. Andrew Massingham Andrew was our leading bowler for the season taking 23 wickets at an average of 13.6. Fast and aggressive, it was pleasing to watch him concentrate on trying to bowl a good length and not too many short bouncers. He was always menacing, often skidded the ball through low, and rarely did the batsmen take many runs from him. His best figures for the season were 6-24. His hard hitting batting was without luck this year, and he finished with 89 runs and a high score of 21no. A strong fieldsman he took 3 catches. Robert Gray Developed in skill and confidence throughout the season. Robert, once he had survived the first over, was capable of delightful, well placed driving of the ball. He featured in some sound middle order partnerships and he finished the season with 131 runs and a high score of 39. With good hands and a strengthening arm his fielding square of the wicket was a feature of the team’s performance. He finished the season with 9 catches.

Hement Vaswarni Was a solid hard working team player. He was often hard to dismiss as a batsman. It was good to watch his fielding improve as he developed into a dependable coverer of mid-on or mid-off. He finished the season with 4 catches. Dhruv Nagrath It has been a pleasure to have been associated with Dhruv. He was a keen and enthusiastic cricketer. Always keen to develop his skills, working hard in the nets, being prepared to field anywhere and showing great improvement in his ground fielding, he was a valued member of the team. Arun Gulati What do you say about Arun? He is the unluckiest player of the year. Early in the season he gets injured, not even playing cricket, and misses most of the season. In his comeback match, a fraction of a second after getting out he falls and injures himself again and is out for the rest of the season. A dedicated courageous player, he took 3 catches in his brief time on the field. Sam Butler Was another developer throughout the season. He began to concentrate on not getting out and his defence became better and his driving of the ball harder and cleaner. He proved himself a steady opening batsman, a foil to the “more adventurous” other batsmen. In the last match of the season he opened and made a memorable, well paced 30 runs. His bowling was always tight and slowed down the run rate. He finished with 7 wickets and best figures of 3-20.
