Introduction
Features
The EPSON Color Calibrator restores you r EPSON Stylus
Pro
5000 or 9000 pr inter to its originally designed color sett ings. By
creating a color profile for your printer and then imp lementing it
on your EPSON RS-5000 Fiery
RIP version 1.3 or you r EPSON
RS-5100 Fiery X2 RIP, the calibrator h elps you achieve consistent
color outp ut.
You can also calibrate your system to match your printingvendors system using ICC profiles. This lets you p review your
outpu t at the earliest possible stage in you r p repress w orkflow .
Note:
The calibrator can only adjust to ICC profiles that are based onJapanColor, SW OP, or EURO profiles.

Sa fe ty Instruc tio ns
Read these instructions before u sing your Color Calibrator, and
save them for later reference. Follow all warn ings and instru ctions
in this Users Guide.
t Unp lug the AC adap ter before cleaning. Clean w ith a dam p
cloth only. Do not spill liqu id on the calibra tor.
t Do not p lace the calibrator on an unstable surface, or near a
rad iator or heat source.
t Do not insert objects into the sensor tip.
t Use only the typ e of power source ind icated on the ACad ap ters label.
t Connect all equipment to p roperly groun ded pow er outlets.
Avoid u sing outlets on the same circu it as p hotocopiers or air
control systems that regularly switch on and off.
t Do not let the power cord become d amaged or frayed.
t If you u se an extension cord w ith the AC ad ap ter, make sure
the total am pere rating of the devices plugged into the
extension cord does not exceed the cords amp ere rating. Also,
make sure the total amp ere rating of all devices plugged into
the w all ou tlet does not exceed the wall outlet's amp ere rating.
t Do not attempt to service the p roducts yourself.
t Unp lug the AC ad ap ter and refer servicing to qualified
service personnel under the following cond itions:
t If the power cord or p lug is damaged; if liqu id has entered the
AC adapter; if the AC ad apter has been d ropped or the cabinet
damaged ; if the AC adapter d oes not operate normally or
exhibits a d istinct change in p erformance. (Do not ad just
controls that are not covered by the operating instructions.)

To set up your calibrator you need to connect it to your comp uter,
then install the ut ility softw are.
Note:
t Before you install the calibrator software, the RS-5000 version 1.3or RS-5100 user software must be installed. See your RIPdocumentation for installation instructions.

Follow the steps below to connect the calibrator to your compu ter:
1. Make sure your computer is turned off.
2. If you are using a PC, connect the Mac-PC serial converter to
the Y-cable as show n below .
Then connect the Y-cable to one of your serial ports and
tighten the screws to stabilize the connection.

3. Connect the Y-cables 8-pin connector to the back of thecalibrator as show n below:

4. Connect the DC connector to the AC adapter.
5. Insert the AC adapter into a properly ground ed outlet.
6. Press the measu re button at the top of the calibrator. The
sensor tip of the calibra tor flashes light if the calibrator is
prop erly connected to your computer.
Note:
If the sensor tip does not flash light, make sure the outlet you areusing is working properly.
You are now read y to install the ut ility softw are. See the nextsection for instru ctions.

Follow the steps below to install the calibrator software:
1. Turn on your computer.
2. Insert the software CD-ROM included w ith your Color
Calibrator into your d rive.
3. Start the installation p rogram an d follow the on-screen
instructions.
Note:
A lthough you can install the utility software when the calibrator isnot connected to your computer, you cant use the software unlessthe calibrator is connected.

Calibrating you r p rinting system is a mu lti-step p rocess. Be su re
to follow all the instructions in th is chap ter in the order they
appear.

Measure the included color p ad to calibrate you r Color Calibrator.
Follow the steps below:
1. Double-click the EPSON Color Ca lib ra to r folder.
2. Double-click the Printe r Ca lib ra to ru tility icon. The following

Calibration button. The following w indow appears:

4. Place the color pad included w ith your calibrator on a flat
surface. Then p lace the sensor tip of the calibrator on the black
circle in the pad .
Note:
Make sure the sensor tip is placed flat and firmly on the pad.

5. Click the Calibration button, or p ress the m easu re button at
the top of the calibrator to m easure the color.
Note:
Do not measure the pad under strong light or direct daylight as thismay render the measurement inaccurate.
After you finish m easuring the black circle, the message in the
wind ow changes to Please c a lib ra te w hite p o int.
6. Place the sensor tip on the color pad s wh ite circle. Repeat step
5 to measu re the color.
7. After you finish measuring the white circle, click the Done
button. Withou t closing the ColorWise Pro Tools utility,
continue on to the n ext section.

Before you start, make sure you have coated or glossy paper
loaded in your p rinter. Cu t sheet pap er is recomm ended if youre
using the EPSON Stylus Pro 9000. Follow these steps:
1. If necessary, start the ColorWise Pro Tools app lication.
Note:
The location and type of file that you need to click to start theprogram depends on where it was installed on your computer andyour computers operating system. If you need help starting theprogram, consult the person who installed it on your computer, or
refer to your EPSON RS-5000 or RS-5100 documentation.
2. In the dialog box that appears, click the name of the printer
you want to calibra te, then click the Selec t button. The
following w indow appears:

6. Choose the Paper Size and Input Tray (or Paper Source) for
printing , then click the Print button to p rint the calibration
sheet.
Following is a sample of the calibra tion sheet pr inted from
you r EPSON Stylus Pro 5000 or 9000:

To make a color profile, you must use the calibrat ion sheet you
prin ted in the p revious section. Make sure your Color Calibrator
has been calibra ted as described in Calibrating the EPSON Color
Calibra tor on p age 3-2, then follow the steps below:
1. Place the calibration sheet you printed in the p revious section
on a flat su rface, with the included black base paper behind it.
Note:
Wait for at least 30 minutes after printing a calibration sheet beforeusing it to create a color profile.
2. Select an emp ty block in the EPSON Printer Calibrator dialog
box by clicking it w ith your mou se.
3. Place the sensor tip of the calibrator on the corresponding
block of the calibration sheet.
Note:
Make sure the sensor tip is placed flat and firmly on the sheet.

4. Click the Calibration button, or p ress the m easu re button at
the top of the calibrator to measure the color.
Note:
Do not measure the sheet under strong light or direct daylight;otherwise the measurement may be inaccurate.
5. Repeat steps 2 and 3 until every block of the calibration sheet
is measured , then clickSave File.
Note:
You cant save the file until every block is measured.
6. Nam e the file and select a folder, then clickSave .
You can now use this file to implement your p rofile. See the next
section for instru ctions.

To imp lement the p rofile you m ade in the last section, follow the
steps below :
1. Start the ColorWise Pro Tools application.
Note:
The location and type of file that you need to click to start theprogram depends on where it was installed on your computer andyour computers operating system. If you need help starting theprogam, consult the person who installed it on your computer, orrefer to your EPSON RS-5000 or RS-5100 documentation.
2. In the dialog box that app ears, click the name of the printer
you w ant to calibrate, then click the Selec t bu tton. The
following screen appears:

5. Select the file you saved in the last section, then click theOpen button. A window app ears confirming that the

6. Click OK.
7. Click Apply toimp lemen t the new p rofile.
If you want to restore the defau lt settings, click the RestoreDevice button. A warn ing message app ears.
ClickOK to restore the factory defau lt calibrations.

M o d ify ing the IC C Pro file
To calibrate you r RS-5000 or RS-5100 to the printer you will
ultimately use for your fina l p roduct, you n eed to obtain a
pr intout from you r vend or. EPSON recomm ends using a p rintout
of one the stand ard color char ts. See the instructions below.
If you want to use a printout of a color chart from your p rinting
vend or, rather than the provided chart, see Using a custom colorchart to u pd ate your ICC p rofile on p age 4-6.
Pre p a ring to m e a sure the sta nd a rd c olor c ha rt
First you need to obtain the printed color chart from you r vendor.
Then you pr epare for measuring by calibrating th e black and
w hite points. Follow these steps:
1. Have your printing vend or print a color chart using one of the
files provid ed w ith you r calibrator. These files are in the Chart
folder of your EPSON Color Calibrator folder and are named
chart.tif and chart.eps.
Note:
Be sure to have the chart printed on the same type of paper as thatof your final print.

2. Start EPSON Profile Upd ater. You see a dialog box like the

3. Select the ICC profile that your printing vendor used from theBase Profile list.
If you dont find the p rofile your vend or u sed in the list, u se
the p rofile that m atches your location:

surface. Place the sensor tip of the calibra tor on the color pad s
black circle.
Note:Make sure the sensor tip is placed flat and firmly on the pad.
7. Click the Calibration button, or p ress the m easu re button at
the top of the calibrator to measure the color.
Note:
Do not measure the pad under strong light or direct daylight as thismay render the measurement inaccurate.
After you finish measur ing the black circle, the message in the
w ind ow changes to Plea se c a lib ra te w hite p o int.
8. Place the sensor tip on the color pad s wh ite circle. Repeat step
7 to measure the color.
9. After you finish m easuring the white circle, click the Done
button.
Youre now read y to m easure the color chart. See the next section
for instructions.

Follow these steps to com plete the p rofile mod ification p rocess:
1. Place the printout of the standard color chart you received
from your printing vendor on a flat surface with the includ ed
black base pap er behind it.
2. Select an empty block in the EPSON Profile Updater dialog
box by clicking it. Place the sensor tip of the calibrator on the
correspond ing block of the color chart.
Note:
Make sure the sensor tip is placed flat and firmly on the paper.
3. Click the Calibration button, or p ress the m easu re button at
the top of the calibrator to m easure the color.
Note:
Do not measure the sample chart under strong light or directsun light as this could render the measurement inaccurate.
4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 un til every block of the color chart is
measured , then click the Done button, or clickSave File.
Note:
You cant save the file until you measure every block.
5. Type a name for the new file in the File Nam e box and click
Sa ve .

After the measurem ent file is saved, the file name is shown
on the screen.
6. Click th e Update Profile button.
7. Give a name to your new p rofile and select the appropriate
folder, as indicated below.
For Window s users:
C:\ WINDOWS\ SYSTEM\ Color
Note:Substitute the letter of your disk drive if it is not drive C.
For Macintosh users:
System Folder\ System\ ColorSync Profiles
Or:

If the profile is updated correctly, the profile cu rve char t

8. Click OK.
You are now ready to apply your new profile. See Applying the
Mod ified ICC Profile on page 4-8.
Using a c usto m c o lo r c ha rt to u pd a te yo ur IC C p ro file
You can m odify you r ICC p rofile using a p rintout from your
prin ting vendor of a custom color char t. The printou t of the
custom color chart must m eet the follow ing requirements:
t The chart m ust be printed by you r vendor on the same
type of paper as the final print.
t The chart mu st show color density measured in
percentages.
Using the custom color char t printout, follow the steps below:
1. Start EPSON Profile Upd ater.
2. Choose Custom Chart.

The following d ialog box app ears:
Before measuring the custom chart, you need to enter
information about the chart in th is d ialog box.
3. Enter the num ber of color density steps between 0% and 100%
in your chart. If there are four or m ore steps, type 4.
4. Enter the density percentage for each step in the boxes as
shown below. If your samp le has more than six total steps,
choose four suitable steps.
5. After you finish m aking the settings, clickApply.
6. Follow the steps u nder Preparing to measure the standard
color chart on page 4-1 from step 5. Then follow the steps
un der Measuring the chart and upd ating the profile on

Follow the steps below to imp lemen t your new p rofile:
1. Start the ColorWise Pro Tools application.
Note:
The location and type of file that you need to click to start theprogram depends on where it was installed on your computer andyour computers operating system. If you need help starting theprogram, consult the person who installed it on your computer, orsee your EPSON RS -5000 or RS-5100 documentation.
2. In the dialog box that appears, click the name of the printeryou w ant to calibrate, then click the Selec t bu tton. The

profile was down load ed successfully.

7. Click the name of your custom p rofile in the right window.The green arrow s direction reverses.

8. Click th e Profile Settings button in the right w indow . The
Simu lation Profile Settings d ialog box app ears:
9. Select Ap pear in Driver as, then choose a setting from
SIMULATION-1 to SIMULATION-10 and clickApply. If the
same name is already assigned to another p rofile, a w indow
app ears asking you to confirm your command .
10. ClickOK, then clickDone to exit Profile Manager.
