17th year of West Lawn Wednesday dinners served in the Community Center (between 4:30 pm and 7:00 pm) beginning September 6th. This

community meal, is served by volunteers from our Kitchen Ministry who donate their time and talents to provide an environment that reflects the love of God in our community. By offering a quality meal at a fair price ($8.00 per person), we seek to create a loving Christian atmosphere that feeds both the body and the soul within our church family and beyond, ministering to those in need.

Join us for a Wednesday evening meal, then drop in for a Bible Study or Community Group (see page 9 for a list of current offerings) as we begin another year of “feeding the body and feeding the soul.”

The second floor of the Reiner Education, along with parts of the Community Center, is look-ing a little yellow! If you visit the hallways outside of the chil-dren’s Sunday School class-rooms, and in the Community

“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven.”

~Ecclesiastes 3:1 School bells are ringing, the lazy days of summer are waning and football is coming! Autumn is my favorite time of year. And if I’m honest, as a mom, I am very much ready for the girls to go back to school – and if they were honest, they would tell you that they are too! Summer is great, relaxing and fun, but we all yearn to get back into the routine that this time of year brings.

The change of seasons invites us to take a look at where we are on our spiritual journey. As Adele Ahlberg-Calhoun writes, “These seasons cycle through our lives bringing times of fruit-bearing, root-deepening, drought and deep wait-ing.” In this upcoming season as we look toward cooler temperatures, the brilliance of the leaves changing color and enjoying the harvest, I invite you to ponder these questions anew –

What is life about? Who am I? What is my purpose? How do I continue on the journey to knowing God?

In addition, I would invite you to also consider joining your West Lawn UMC family during our upcoming 3 week ser-mon series, “Family of Faith” as we look at our own faith journey, sharing our stories and passing the faith legacy to the next generation. We begin as Pastor Jeff and I “co-preach” on Sunday, September 10th. During these three weeks, we invite families of all shapes and sizes to join us for some special events each week between services on the lawn. On September 24th, his series will culminate as we literally pass the stories of God to our 3rd graders, for our annual Bible distribution during the 9:30 a.m. service! We are also excited to share some changes in our children’s and youth ministry schedules, which I would encourage you to read about later in this newsletter. Kelly, Elizabeth, Isaac and I feel so very blessed to have each of our dedicated teachers, assistants and leaders share their time and gifts with our children and youth! As for our adults looking to deepen your faith taking the next step, no matter what that may look like for you, we would invite you to consider join-ing a small group, a Sunday School class, or a Bible study – there are many options to choose from – once again, thanks to our many teachers, leaders and facilitators! Transformation does not happen overnight, so I would urge you to have grace with yourself. Please also know that you are not alone, so if you are not sure where to begin, we would love to help you find your way. Trust me, we all had to begin somewhere and God has brought you here to this place, at this time for a rea-son and that reason is for you to continue to wrestle with the above questions, knowing that God provides the path to know & love God and to love your neighbor also. May this season find you longing to grow closer to God as we journey together to know Him better,

~Pastor Andrea

The following article is taken from a Mission to Children newsletter featuring our Safe Haven Lighthouse

This special after-school program hosted at a church in Pennsylvania [West Lawn UMC]

is using the “Cultivating Character Bible Guide at class for K-3 children.”

Linda [Welsh], a teacher in the after school program [Safe Haven Lighthouse], shared how she creatively uses our redwood tree lesson. With each “character” ring of the tree, Linda asked the kids to write a meaningful word associated with each character value. Today Linda’s class is ecstatic with a new lesson from our Bible Guide, walking with Jesus (our Christlikenesstheme). The class is decorating a cross with colored hearts as they think of ways that they can spread the love of Jesus.

This after school program is a great example how the local church can equip the next generation to build character in a way that helps children and youth joyfully obey Jesus and demonstrate God’s love for the world. It just takes a willing person to lead by example.

United Methodist Night at the Phillies 2017 was a great night!! We had two buses go to the game on July 29th. We want to thank Klein’s Transportation for our safe passage to the stadium.

The game was iffy in the beginning with the Braves leading 2-0 in the first inning, but our Phillies didn’t let us down that night. They knew their lucky charms, the United Methodists, were in the house. The Phillies tied it up in the bottom of the 9th inning and went on to win it in the 11th inning. It was a great ending to a fun trip.

We are looking forward to next year’s game. I’ll be putting information out hopefully in January with the new date. Hope to see you at the game! -Lori Madara

Ladies, at this year’s retreat, our theme is called HEALING THE SUPERGAL

SYNDROME© And Finding Your Abundant Life. Our messenger for this fun and encouraging retreat is Lori Hynson, a speaker, author, bible teacher, group leader and singer who lives right here in Pennsylvania. Like most of us, pride convinced her she could handle whatever life threw her way. Are you overburdened and overwhelmed? Trying to be in charge? Lori will be sharing with us her testimony about how she recovered from The Supergal Syndrome, teaching us how we can be released from our SuperGal Syndrome burdens, how to recognize them, confess them, and step out in faith. Don’t miss this “Retreat to Remember” with your church sisters!

About Our Speaker: The SuperGal Syndrome, and its focus on control, pride and perfectionism, causes a chasm in our personal relationship with Christ. Fueled by her passion to inspire women who struggle in their self-imposed chains, Lori Hynson shares her SuperGal Recovery secrets through the Word of God. With joy, transparency, humor, and song, Lori reaches out to hurting and overburdened women to encourage them to surrender these bur-densome chains to God. She wants them to realize, as she has had to learn, that IT’S NOT THEIR JOB TO RUN THIS PLANET!

In her own words: “Unchurched the first half of my life, I became a Sunday Acquaintance of the Lord at age 47. Went to church, sang on the choir. But didn’t quite get it. See, I still believed myself strong and resilient. Capable and confi-dent. I knew of God, but didn't know God. I didn't trust anyone else to handle my stuff. Behind closed doors, I strug-gled to hold all the pieces of my life in place.” Lori’s calling now is to help the rest of us conquer the struggle through relationship with God. You won’t want to miss this!! (visit http://lorihynson.com/about for more information about our speaker)

"Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30

This summer we had the pleasure of mentoring six young Christian women in the QuadW Internship Program in the city of Reading during the months of June and July. Our young missionaries were from Puerto Rico and from the city of Reading. They were mentored under the direction of Pastor Nick Camacho, Carolann Schneiderhan, guest speakers, Pastor Andrea Haldeman, Past Terry Cooney, Pastor Jean Howe, and also mentors from our congregation, Barb Pis-citello, Luz Marino, Cache Quinones, Judy Alvarez, Brenda Bauer and Zylkia Rivera. Throughout the summer they read and studied the Gospels and also worked through two book studies. They served at New Journey Soup Kitchen and Clothing Closet, Hope Rescue Mission where they provided worship and devotions, served as teachers and mentors for young children at the City Light Summer Camp Program and worked at our West Lawn UMC Vacation Bible School. In addition they worshiped and gave their testimony through word, singing or dance at six local churches in the area. It could not have been possible without the help of our West Lawn family. Thank you especially to those who provid-ed donations of furniture, home items and time as we quickly set up the city home that God provided through the help of the home owners Pam and Mark Hathaway from Hopewell UMC. Thank you to Al Wicks, and our kitchen team who organized and prepared wonderful meals each night during VBS and to those who prepared the weekly breakfast treats. Thank you to Ed Stauffer for providing a meal in his home. Thank you to Katie and Warren Marweg who pro-vided tender loving care and shopped for them throughout the summer. Thank you to the mentors who provided time and guidance with the interns through the summer, especially Luz Marino and Cache Quinones who provided addition-al assistance and care during their recuperation. Thank you to Frank Paul who provided transportation for them daily and to Judy Alvarez for the final program celebration picnic and pool party at her home. Thank you to Pastor Jeff Raf-fauf for providing direction throughout the entire process. Praise be to God for guiding us and providing all that we needed as we worked through the details of organizing and running this summer internship program. May He continue to bless these wonderful young women as they move forward in discipleship and in Christian service.

Willie Tichenor was a

young man who

passed away a num-

interns around the country on summer mis-

summer. These Interns have been the rock of

our summer camp program. Along with be-

of art projects throughout the building, such

as the Fruit of the Spirit” steps you see here.

Two of our interns are hometown girls from

I think so! Thank you Ladies! AND A big

porting City Light Ministry in so many ways.

West Lawn is on a Mission! We are excited to sponsor and send forth 3 mission work teams yet this fall. September 10-16 in Atlantic County, NJ - Jennifer Fuhrer will be leading a team of servants to help rebuild homes devastated by SuperStorm Sandy. A short drive and week of service can pay long in personal satisfaction, if you'd care to join in. Contact Jen if interested in participating. November 11-18 in Pignon, Haiti - Pastor Jeff is leading our 6th team to travel to Pignon and build another house in conjunction with the Fuller Center for Housing and their Global Partners. This trip is full, but they covet your prayers -- for them, for safe travel, for those with whom they will work, and for the family who's life will be changed by this new home. (Funds for construction come from our Christmas Miracle Offering.) November 18-24 - Thankful Youth Mission Trip will once again be an inter-generational trip led by Dave Endy. This year these servants will help to rebuild homes destroyed by wildfires last year. If interested in trip specifics , con-tact Dave Endy.

MAJOR CHANGES ARE COMING SOON!

I am excited to announce that major changes are coming to the youth ministry

department here at WLUMC. A lot of time was spent talking with parents,

Pastors, leaders and students about how best to serve the students in the busy

world we live in today. I spent time in prayer and reflection about our past

few years here and am really looking forward to some of the new changes

that are coming to the group. Some changes are big and noticeable and some

are more subtle but hopefully still significant. It’s too much to type it all out

here, but please allow me to share with you the highlights of what is to come

starting on September 10th when we relaunch our Youth Ministry for the fall!

YOUTH GROUP CHANGES: Starting on September 10th, both the Junior High and Senior High groups

will meet on Sunday nights. They will also have a brand new time. Both

groups will start at 6:00PM and run until 7:30PM. The groups will remain

separate for game time, circle up time, and fellowship time, but will come

together for prayer, the message and announcements.

We are also launching a brand new group this fall. This ministry is geared

specifically for our 12th grade students. It will also meet on Sunday nights

starting at 8PM and run until 8:45. The goal is to have some honest and real

conversations about college life, adulthood, and what's next for students after

they leave the shelter and routine of high school and youth group settings.

NEW HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT LEADERSHIP PLAN One of the things I am most excited about for this fall is the launch of a new

student leadership group for this school year. This will be open to all Senior

High School students who self-select into the program. Our theme will be

“iSERVE” and it will consist of 6 small groups of student leaders paired with

an adult or two and focused on a key element of ministry. The areas of focus

are Invite, Supplicate (Prayer), Embrace, Recreate, Venue, and Empower and

these different elements make up the team name of “iSERVE”. These groups

will meet on the last Wednesday of the month during our normal West Lawn

Wednesday Small group times.

WEST LAWN WEDNESDAY TIME IS CHANGED We will eat dinner at 6PM and small groups will meet from 6:30-7:30PM!

Dear WLUMC, Greetings from Tanzania and our local church.

Hope you are all well and enjoying summer. Just wanted to

say thank you for all your love and support, and know that I

am praying for WLUMC. In Him, Melissa

I would like to thank Pastors

Jeff and Terry for their vis-

its to me during my recent

hospital stay. I appreciate

their time knowing they have

a busy schedule. Also, thank

you to all of those who

prayed for my successful

surgery. Bill Surgeoner

WLUMC, Words could never express our gratitude to you for

sponsoring the QuadW interns and sending them to us. They were

absolutely incredible with our kids! Our campers will remember

them forever and I truly believe many of the kids will have a rela-

tionship with Jesus because of their efforts. And the brought so

much colorful art to our building, leaving a footprint of love for

our kids to remember them by for years to come! Again, THANK

YOU so very much! You are entirely too good to us!!! Blessings,

Pastor Joe, City Light Ministries

Dear WLUMC,

We cannot thank you enough for letting us experience this great journey this summer. Every day of

the two months we spent here was a treat blessing to our lives. Thank you for open the doors of

this program to us. We appreciate everything you have done. Thank you for letting yourselves be

used by God; we are so thankful for this experience. God did amazing things with us and through

us—He was truly glorified. Thank you for believing in us. God bless you, The QuadW Interns.

Words cannot begin to express the sincere feeling of being loved and supported by everyone at

West Lawn UMC during Carl's illness and after his demise.. Our family appreciated the visits and

prayers from each pastor, the flowers presented by the church, the many sympathy cards and those

friends who took charge of the reception following the Memorial Service. WLUMC continues to be

God's Church, serving with joy all who enter. Many thanks from Marsha Sarfert and family.

INVITE, EMBRACE, EMPOWER

Dear Congregation, Thank you for the

beautiful flowers at Wendi’s service. Your

thoughtfulness at this difficult time is

comforting. We are grateful for friends

like you. Danny Pettinato & Family

Dear Friends of West Lawn UMC,

Thank you very much for the thoughtful gifts of a

delicious loaf of bread and two tickets to a future

Wednesday dinner. We look forward to a dinner this

coming fall and to visiting your congregation for wor-

ship in the future. Sincerely, Elaine & Tom Bowersox

Dear pastor Jeff & WLUMC, We really want to thank you and your congregation for the huge gift of

$3500 for buying more MegaVoice players for the Sandawe. Odilo (former translator for the Scrip-

tures) and his friend Babli have distributed the 140 players. Since we have received donations from

other people we have some $ left and we are planning to order more players in the near future. Peo-

ple really like them and it is a great way to get the word of God into their hands and hopefully hearts

as well. Thank you again for your great help in reaching the Sandawe people with the Word of God!

Serving together to reach the lost. Daniel and Elisabeth Hunziker

Thank you everyone who helped with the service and reception honoring our father, Don Coleman– the

up the tables and chairs for the reception, putting everything away and cleaning up the mess. Thank

you so much! Sincerely, Amy Cruley

Brooke & Jeff Speidel (sponsors: Jayme & Justin Raffauf) 9:30 Service

Brooke and Jeff moved to Berks County and were looking for a Methodist

church to attend -- somewhere to raise their sons in a church that has many

children to grow with. They are originally from Montgomery Country, have

been married for 13 years and have two sons, Mason (age 3) and Finley (age

6 weeks). Brooke is a Medical Technician and works at Reading Hospital.

She enjoys spending time with her family, baking and the outdoors. Jeff is a

truck driver and enjoys spending time with family, fishing, and hunting.

Rich & Kathy Mextorf Rich & Kathy moved into this area and were searching for a UM church similar to

what they were used to. Also, their oldest son and his family attend West Lawn. They

have five sons, three are married and one is to be married in October. They also have

four grandchildren. Rich and Kathy both enjoy various forms of exercise and are avid

golfers. They enjoy reading and most all forms of music.

Prince Antwi (11:00 Service)

Prince began attending West Lawn UMC because it was close to where he lives. He is

married with one child, and works as a Psych Aide.
