2 FROM THE ASSOCIATE

from the associate pastor Challenging You Toward Discipleship A Thought or Two

Fall is in the Air I am excited about the fall. It feels like a wave is building that we have the opportunity to catch. Our Sunday schools have started, and we had a grand Sunday this past week. I want to say a special THANK YOU to all our Sunday school and Wednesday night workers that create a wonderful experience for our children, youth and adults during these times of programming. There is an army (70ish people…some of whom work weekly others monthly) that makes all this possible. Our Wednesday nights will begin on the 31st with a low key cookout and some games. And then we begin electives the following Wednesday. Barry is leading a course on Islam. Mumford Scott and Alva Whitehead are co-teaching a course on apologetics. I will be leading a Bible Survey course as we look for the major themes that hold the Bible together. Don’t miss it! First class is September 7th. Also in September, First Presbyterian will host Helping Florence Flourish’s City Convene Conference on the 19th and 20th. You are invited to participate in the whole conference. A list of speakers and their topics are listed below. There is a dinner on the night of the 19th that you could be challenged by. Luke Dooley will speak that evening and non-conferees are welcome to come. The dinner will cost $40 which helps offset some of the cost of the speaker as well as covers dinner. Consider it; It will be an encouragement. City Convene Topics and speakers include: Racial Reconciliation: Neddie Winters, Mission

Mississippi Church and Public School Partnerships: Jeff

Martin, BeUndivided Portland, Oregon Citywide Prayer Initiatives: Pastor David Beidel

from Staten Island and Saturate Building an Effective Backbone Organization:

Stephanie Butler of the Church of Great Lansing Jobs: The best social program: Byron McMillan

of Jobs for Life in Raleigh

Cross-Sector Partnerships that Change Cities: Dr. Greg Thompson of New City Commons in Charlottesville, VA

Servant Leadership in the Marketplace that Transforms: Luke Dooley, Q Commons

There will be a City Wide Prayer Gathering on Sept. 19th as well, hosted by Rev Dr. Calvin Robinson and Trinity Baptist at 7:30 on 124 West Darlington Street. At the end of the month we will have our Haitian pastor friend, Actionnel Fluerisma and his wife Yolanda, with us on Sunday the 25th. You may be aware that we had his son, Val, with us this summer hosted by the Morgan’s, Marechal’s, Davis’ and McBride’s. We continue to build our relationship with OFCB. You will see a picture below from agronomist Wallace Manasse of a chicken coop that is being built under his leadership as a result of gifts given from First Presbyterian.

Plans are underway to work with Open Table going forward. If you are interested in participating in an Open Table, please let me know. We plan to begin one as the fall unfolds. You will remember that Jon Katov, director of OpenTable, was with us in June. As you can see, much is happening that will challenge you toward discipleship.

Child Development Center News Now Open!

Greetings! We are up and running! We have a wonderful group of families dropping their children off at our Child Development Center each weekday morning. Our new staff members are busy planning and preparing for many exciting learning adventures as we move forward in this adventure. Thank you again for your support. The many gifts towards our classroom supplies and furnishings have pushed our rooms up to a higher level of learning readiness. It has truly been amazing to watch our God provide for the many needs that we have. We will be leaving our “Christmas in July” tree up through the month of September, so if you would like to make a donation to our center, you will have a better idea of the needs that we have. Several church members have volunteered to come and read stories, rock babies and help with classroom projects! An extra hand is always welcome and we are currently putting together some

information which will help as we incorporate your willingness to serve with the needs of our center. DSS requires that volunteers meet certain criteria. More details soon. Please remember we are participating in the Harris Teeter, “Together in Education” program. All VIC card members may participate by registering at the checkout counter. Please ask the cashier to link your VIC card to our school code, which is 3893 . A percentage of your purchase dollars for the HT brand purchases will be contributed to our school program. Each VIC card customer may sign up for up to five schools to receive their donation equally. Thank you again for opening your doors to this ministry! To God be the Glory!

4 CHURCH ADMINISTRATOR

Church Administration Matters COMMUNICATION, COOPERATION AND GRACE We are beginning a new program year this month. Our Wednesday night programs are gearing up. Various prayer groups, Bible studies and circles will resume their regular meetings after taking a summer break. Additionally, our Child Development Center opened August 8th. We have 60 children and a committed staff who care for them Monday –Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. So to say it’s busy around here is an understatement. As we move into the Fall, it will be important for each of us to keep these three words in mind: Communication: If you are a group leader, please be sure to communicate with the church office to be sure that your activity is on the church calendar. Even if you’ve been meeting at the same time and same place for the last 20 years. This will help us publicize your activity in The Reminder, Sunday worship bulletin, on The City and other methods. It will also ensure that our custodians will have the room(s) set up properly. Cooperation: The Child Development Center is in operation Monday – Friday, 7:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. It is a wonderful ministry to our community. From time to time, there will be a need to “work around” their daily schedule. Our children’s Sunday School and Wednesday night teachers and leaders are already aware of the need to “share” space. If your group is asked to make “adjustments” to meeting space, traffic patterns (i.e. using a different door, etc.) your cooperation will be greatly appreciated. Grace: From time to time, some thing(s) may “fall through the cracks”. In those cases, it will be

important for us each to have an attitude of grace. The phrases “I’m sorry”; “I forgive you” and “Let’s see how we can work this out” will go a long way in making this a successful season of ministry at First Presbyterian Church.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY AVAILABLE The opening of the Child Development Center has created a need for additional volunteer receptionists throughout the week. We would like to be able to staff the Reception Desk in the Welcome Center during business hours Monday – Thursday (approximately 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.) and on Friday from (approximately 9 a.m. – 2 p.m.) Our current receptionists volunteer one day a week for a morning or afternoon “shift”. The time commitment is usually 3 to 4 hours per “shift”. Receptionists will be trained on use of the church phone system, greeting guests, vendors and others who come to the church. In addition to these tasks, the volunteer receptionists are sometimes asked to assist the church office staff with projects. This is a great opportunity for recently retired folks or those looking for an opportunity to “help out” at the church. If you enjoy meeting people and are able to multi-task, this may be the perfect opportunity for you! If you are interested and would like more information, contact Teresa Stewart at (843) 662-2583 or e-mail [email protected].

Monday starting September 12 6:30-8:30 PM in Room 104

CHRISTIAN APOLOGETICS: KNOW WHY YOU BELIEVE WHAT YOU BELIEVE

Munford Scott & Alva Whitehead What is Christian Apologetics? Christian apologetics is a field of Christian theology that presents

reasoned basis for the Christian faith, defending the faith against objections. In today’s society where relativism and inclusiveness are the popular world view and where any mention of intelligent design or moral absolutes is ridiculed, Christians must heed the admonition of 1 Peter 3:15 but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence; ( NAS). To do this every Christian should have at least a basic understanding of Christian Apologetics.

Outline: Arguments for the Existence of God The Absurdity of Life Without God. The Case for Moral Absolutes A Case for Christ Evidence of the Resurrection of Christ Darwinism in Crisis – The Revolution Against Evolution Apologetics & the Spiritual Life Christianity Among the World Religions Historical Jesus Defending the Gospel Accounts of Jesus What About Those Who Have Never Heard the Gospel

SURVEY THE BIBLE THROUGH THE LENS OF GOD’S COVENANT AND KINGDOM  Chris Handley

This course will present an overview of the whole Bible with a special focus on the major themes of the Bible. The covenant, kingdom, and the Cross

are but a few of the topics which will be discussed. SEEKING ALLAH, FINDING JESUS Barry Jenkins

A devout Muslim encounters Christianity. The writer of this course, Nabeel Qureshi, a former Muslim, first began to study the Bible in order to challenge it, but through his study came to know Jesus as a result. In this course, you will learn about Islam and how to share our Christian faith with Muslim families.

Wednesday Night Electives begin September 7!

NEWS 11

Parking Lot Ministry Saturday, September 10th

First Presbyterian will be serving the Parking Lot Ministry Breakfast the 2nd Saturday of each month. If you would like to help, please contact Donnie Wheeler at [email protected].

The Presbyterian Community Report

August, like every other month, being a resident at the Presbyterian Community is a pleasure. New, as well as old friends, sitting on the porch under a bevy of overhead fans, reliving both truths and lies about younger days. One of our most favorite activities is to sit on the porch, watch strangers arrive and guess who they are—who they are coming to see—how well they are dressed- and if they will throw their cigarettes in the grass or pavement and stomp them. We don’t need much for entertainment. We have 6 big screen tv’s in different places and about all we see is Hillary and Donald trying to be the champion “mud slingers” in this political race. Social security aged people do not get into arguments about this garbage. Of course, there is Ineeda Mann. For once, I can see some justification in her feelings. Having been born in West Virginia, Hillary early on said she would eliminate coal production. Since more than 300 of Ineeda Mann’s connected family depend on coal for their livelihood, she is deeply concerned for their loss of job and income. She is afraid that since most of her relatives are on probation for making “white lightning” they will have to return to being producers and if caught will have to serve jail time. But our community administrator does not allow any political signs displayed on campus. This did not keep Ineeda Mann from campaigning for her cause. She ordered online an authentic coal miner’s hat with lamp, bibb overalls and a can of coal dust. She put on the costume and coated her cheeks with coal dust and went down to Frontage road to Hardees carrying a sign that read “Coal Dust Matters- Don’t Dump Trump”. It didn’t take long for the manager of Hardees to call and say he didn’t want a protest fight in his parking lot- come get her. We did and once again all is well.

A Thank You – from our last Tabernacle Trip Friends, On behalf of the entire congregation of Crossroads Community Church in Schererville, Indiana– I want to thank all of you for all the hours that went into the making of The Tabernacle Experience, the many prayers that have gone up on behalf of all the people who walked through the Tabernacle and experienced the very presence of God-for some of them for the very first time– and for your willingness to share this labor of love with us! We are truly grateful for your ministry and consider you truly as co-laborers with us for the Gospel. We were so blessed to get to know Joe Koenig and were thankful for his patience and willingness to serve so well. He is a choice servant of Christ. We also enjoyed our brief interactions with Joe Carter -another gift from God. Blessings on your ministry! Drew Brown, Pastor
