the first time.

few. There will also be refreshments, burgers, a

On Monday 11th June most of the

Epworth Flower club’s

membership and some guests welcomed

Elizabeth Bishop to what was to be a very

enjoyable evening. Elizabeth is an area

demonstrator from

Sheffield and her

demonstration was

entitled “Magic of the

East”.

She opened her

demonstration with a

musical accompaniment

“The Circle of Life” as

she placed several tall

dark red gladioli, palm

leaves, cordyline leaves,

ginger lily, 6 dark anthuriums, gerbera and

wonderful, assorted tropical leaves to create a

stunning display. She then placed this near a large

soft tiger. As she worked she told the group of her

affection for animals and her interesting life which

began in Malaysia.

The second arrangement was on a theme of black

and white, using a basket container into which she

placed leather leaves, gemini gerbera, Anastasia

chrysanthemums and she filled in tiny gaps with

gypsophila. This arrangement was accompanied by

a panda!

As she continued her oriental theme Liz told us of

her voluntary work with a donkey sanctuary and

she put some materials for purchase in support of

the charity. In front of the arrangements she stood

a large, quite realistic donkey.

Her further creations included one using a large

orchid group, pale anthuriums called Fantasia which

had a beautiful, large spade edged with pink,

oriental lilies and cascading, pale green amaranthus.

Another incorporated very large hosta leaves,

strelitzia, palms, purple lisianthus and orange

chrysanthemums.

By the end of the evening Liz had created six

wonderful arrangements using the flowers and

materials mentioned and several more including

croton leaves, pandanus and heliconia. She made

up a bouquet as a seventh prize with her “left

overs”.

It was agreed that all had experienced a wonderful

evening showing us a very different display of

flowers and arrangements from those we

sometimes see and the group look forward to

welcoming Elizabeth Bishop in the future.

The July meeting will be an outing to Walker’s

Nursery at Blaxton on Monday, 9th.

Members are asked to meet there at

North Lincolnshire Council’s

Sports Development Team is

currently establishing a

programme of Nordic walks

that will start from various

locations across North

Lincolnshire. All of which will be

led by fully qualified Nordic

Walking leaders.

So what is Nordic Walking?

Nordic Walking is the fastest growing fitness

activity in the world and is used by individuals,

personal trainers, health clubs, physiotherapists,

doctors and health promoters because it is highly

effective, affordable and FUN!

Nordic Walking is an enhancement of ordinary

walking only twice as effective! It uses poles to in

order to add two major benefits to walking

The use of poles means the upper body muscles

are used as well as the legs

The poles help to propel the walker along – this

means he/she works harder than usual yet the

support given by the poles makes it feel easier!

It is a specific fitness technique and is not to be

confused with trekking or hill walking as the poles

are not planted in front of the walker but in a

specific way that increases the use of the upper

body.

Nordic Walking is quite unique in that it provides

benefits for everybody from those with medical

problems to the super fit. Whatever your goal,

whether it be becoming more active and improving

fitness levels, weight loss or overcoming a medical

condition, or simply meeting people and having fun

then Nordic Walking may be for you.

Nordic Walking is a great way to get your whole

body moving and to significantly improve the

condition of your muscles, heart and lungs. It will

boost your energy levels and help you to ward off

medical conditions such as: Heart Disease and Strokes . High Blood

pressure . Diabetes (type 2) . Bowel Cancer. Osteoporosis and Osteoarthritis . Stress and Anxiety . Obesity

We will be starting a regular Instructor led Nordic

Walk in Epworth on Friday 11th May, starting at

10am, meeting in Epworth Garden Centre Car

Park. The only charge is for the hire of the poles,

which will cost you £1 per walk. Individuals with

their own poles are welcome to come along free

of charge.

If this is something you are interested in giving a go

please contact Michelle Spacey on 01724

297280/07717588192 or alternatively at

[email protected] for further

information. Prior booking is essential for the walk;

bookings can be made on the above details.

Christian Aid Week was very

different but the events we had

were well supported. The Service on the

Sunday to start the week was informative and told

how Christian Aid’s partner the Methodist Church

of Sierra Leone in West Africa had provided the

tools and the “know-how” for the people in the

village of Bhap (who hadn’t enough food to feed

themselves) to set about producing enough food

for their village and even more which will help

other villages in the same predicament. They set

about making a new school for their village and

were starting to make a business centre, too. They

now have a machine to grind the cassava which will

save them very many hours of manual work. They

can now sell the extra. This has all been possible by

Christian Aid giving and working alongside the

Methodist Church out there. There are many

other places in the world where the problems are

the same or even worse than Bhap. The money we

raised will be used for similar jobs or to provide

emergency relief in times of urgent need. The

Service was followed by lunch of soup and a roll,

quiche and salad and fruit pie and custard. Well

supported and most enjoyable.

On Thursday our other event took place. Our

Coffee morning, Lunch, Bring and Buy and Cream

Scone tea were well supported.

The total of £1.058.10, was from donations as well

as these events. We were very pleased with the

support we received.

A big thank you goes to all who supported our

events and gave of their time, money and skills.

The Crowle Scrabble Club is

looking for new members. We are re-

locating to Crowle Methodist Chapel in July on

Wednesdays (dates to be arranged) between 2 -

4pm. If you would like further information about

joining us please ring 07506112008. You will be

very welcome, we are not Competition standard

and provide refreshments, charge is £1

each towards the room.

EPWORTH POLICE REPORT

Ashtree Close, High Street, Stool Close Road,

Jeffrey Lane, Belton – Anti-social behaviour, crime.

There has recently been an increase in reports of dwelling

burglary, criminal damage, theft of motor vehicle,

motorcycles and scooters being driven in an anti-social

manner. Work has already started with partnerships

involving police, Safer Neighbourhoods and North

Lincolnshire Homes and this work is on-going. There have

recently been some arrests made which have on-going

police enquiries. I would like anyone with any information, concerns or is the victim of any instances please ring the

police on 101 (Humberside not South Yorkshire) or if an emergency 999, or you can always pass information

anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

UPDATE:- At the Neighbourhood Action Team meeting held on Tuesday 29 May at Belton Pavilion members of

the public attended to voice their concerns to the members and there is to be further contact outside this meeting

to discuss further. This issue was also placed as a Neighbourhood Action Team Priority.

Anyone with any information or require any advice or guidance, please contact the Central Neighbourhood team by

e-mail;- [email protected] [email protected]

Countrywatch Issues

Calls for service to areas of land both owned and used by the farming community have occurred including offences

of Criminal Damage, theft, poaching, off road bikes, trespassers on land with dogs. Times vary throughout the 24

hour period. A considerable amount of work and liaison has been built between Neighbourhood staff and the

owners and staff working on land to engage them and to identify where offences and offenders are committing these

acts and routes they use.

UPDATE:- Levels have dropped but calls are being received and officers attend but not further prosecutions have

resulted. One recent court hearing was discontinued by the Crown Prosecution Service as someone did not wish

to be involved in the court process and was key to a prosecution; this is quite understandable but does cause and

issue in the judicial process. If at any time you become suspicious of any persons please telephone the police. It is

far better that we know at the time in order that we can make checks and also to forward onto surrounding police

areas as soon as possible, as it is quite usual for such people to frequent other areas during the course of their

activities. Just because the people you see appear to look like they are legitimate this may not be the case so

Humberside police do encourage local communities to report anything that on the face of it does not appear

normal.

St Andrews Church/St Andrews Ivy Hall/Fountain Court, Epworth – Anti-Social behaviour, youths

causing annoyance and criminal damage, litter.

Reports are being received that the locations are being frequented by youths and there has already been some

damage caused. The building is in a quiet area and thus is attractive to youths congregating during the evening hours

and particularly at weekends. St Andrews Ivy Hall is adjoining the car park, church, and play area and as such make

it a particularly favourable during evening hours. Neighbourhood staff and incident response officers make regular

patrols at the locations and any youths found behaving in a disorderly manner will be dealt with accordingly.

UPDATE:- Calls for service have reduced, but with the lighter summery evenings, impending school holidays,

various functions and activities over the coming months, patrols will still be attending these locations to monitor and

prevent any issues occurring.

Any young persons wishing to attend Street Sport sessions should attend Belton Pavilion Playing field on a Friday

evening from 6-8pm, where multi sport sessions are proving quite a hit with numbers of attendees improving, this is

also open to those living outside the Belton area.

Lifestyle 2012 Lifestyle 2012 has launched! Be one of the first teams to take part in the project by completing the

Amateur Dramatics The Epworth Mowbray Players No.2

By

Anthony Catherall

In each of the early programmes there were acknowledgements to various people and

organisations.

“Proscenium, scenery and electrical equipment, by permission of the Mechanics’ Institute and the Misterton Amateur Dramatic Society”.

“The Mowbray Players take this opportunity of expressing their sincere thanks to the many

helpers who have in any way contributed towards the success of the production, especially to Mr. T.E. Clark, of Owston Ferry, for the loan of chairs, and Messrs, E. Shillito & Son, for the

use of their premises as the Booking Office, and another, Miss N. Mawson and Mr. G.A.

Harrison for designing and writing posters”.

By the time of the second production in February 1950, “The Gleam” by Warren Chetham Strode, “the chairs in the hall were now supplied by Mr. T.W. Pepper, Snaith and the Epworth

Youth Centre”. Whilst, “the greater part of the stage furniture, being obtained from, Mr. C.H. Watson, Furnisher, High Street Epworth and Crowle. Telephone: Epworth 331, and Crowle

128”. The Telephone used in the production “was kindly loaned by the G.P.O”. (General Post Office)

Needless to say, the programme printing was carried out by Barnes & Breeze in Epworth,

Tel.202. Harry Shipley who worked there along with George Haddon Archer a solicitors clerk for Newborns, were tasked to be available to list new members.

Now & Then - Then & Now

No. 39 - by Anthony Catherall This month and every month see Epworth in bygone days and compare to today's images !

Brook's Mill and the road to Belton in the winter of 1947. This tower mill was built circa.1800 and was originally known as

the 'White Mill' although like most of its colleagues it ended its working life tarred black, including the cap. It worked by

wind until the late 1940's, latterly with two sails as this picture shows, continuing by engine until 1960. Then in November 1962 the two sails were removed and the tower was allowed to become derelict. Originally it had four patent sails that

drove three pairs of stones of which two pairs remained up to 1977, one French and one Grey. The machinery was removed in 1977, originally intended for use in the restoration of Scunthorpe mill. The tower, that still was an empty shell in 1978. 1982 saw the mill converted to a large modern house gaining a copper-clad mock ogee cap. Like Maws Mill close-by there were two fireplaces on the ground floor with flues opening out at about first floor level. Today as we see in the lower

picture that I took in January 2012 the Mill Tower and house has reverted to a near white colour once more.

Epworth Primary School News

Residential Visits

This is the time of year when all the children in the Juniors have

the opportunity to go on a Residential visit. We have already had

the Year 5 children staying at Hagg Farm, an Environmental Educa-

tion centre in the Peak district and the Year 4 children visiting the

Peak Venture Kingswood Activity Centre in Peniston.

Later this week the Year 3 children are going away for their first

Residential visit to Austerfield. This is just for one night to give the

children a taster of being away from home.

Lastly the year 6 children will be staying at a hotel in Whitby during the last week of the term. This is a

luxurious week in comparison with the other trips with en-suite rooms and lovely meals cooked for us by

the Hotel staff. It is a real highlight of the childrens year in their last year of Primary school.

School Sleepover

Last month around 50 children stayed in school for a Sleepover to raise money for the school. This was

organised by our Friends group. Activities in the evening for the children included a Night playtime, a

Treasure Hunt and a late night movie with sleeping in the classrooms – although the amount of sleep was

quite limited. It was far too exciting to sleep!

Academy Status

The school is making good progress in becoming an Academy. This is an exciting step for the school which

will give us more flexibility and freedom to work more independently. From September – if all the legal

work is completed – we will be Epworth Primary Academy. In our 30th Anniversary year, it is good that

we are looking forward to being one of the first Primary Academies in the Isle.

With best wishes John Hodgkins Headteacher

big “Thank you” to everyone who attended the events over

Does it mean

what it says?

One of the challenges of

modern technology and

the flow of e mails and

texts that come into us is

the question “Is this true?”

It is especially important

with e mails, and often it

seems I have a follow up e mail to those warning of

virus attacks, saying “Please disregard previous e

mail, it now appears it was a hoax.” So can we really

believe what we read?

Last month in my article for the Arrow, I wrote

about my mishaps with electric drills, and ended

the piece with the statement that there was one

electric drill free to a good home. Now two

people read that ( well at least two, I hope more

actually read it) and asked me if there was a drill

free to a good home. There was one, and it now

has another owner. I hope a very happy owner.

There was though a hesitancy about the question

they asked —was this too good to be true? Well it

wasn’t.

Sometimes things are too good to be true. Did I

want to be entered in a free draw for a new car I

was asked recently. But it wasn’t that good, as it

was really a way in to engaging me in conversation

and try to persuade me to change my energy

supplier.

Plain speaking is important so in our conversation

and in what people say to us it is good to say what

we mean and mean what we say.

The visit of the Watoto Children's

choir over the Queen's Jubilee week-

end was again a joy and a privilege. It was super to have a church full of people from Belton,

the rest of the Isle as well as Scunthorpe and even Roth-

erham. The concert was called 'Beautiful Africa' and it

included dance, videos of Uganda, songs and testimonies

of how the children's lives have been transformed by

the love of God shown through the work of Watoto

Child Care Ministries.

The choir were looked after by nine local families.

Monday is the choir's rest day so they all had a lie in,

then did some school work, had lunch and then did

various activities ranging from walking by the Trent to

visiting the trains in Sandtoft to playing football on Belton playing field. They were up early on Tuesday in

order to leave for Bradford at 9am.

Since their last visit to us Watoto have expanded their work into Northern Uganda and Southern Sudan.

Half of the children in the choir were from the north. One of the girls, Lydia, featured in the Sunday Tele-

graph in May. The choir sang for the Queen at Windsor and, at a private reception afterwards, Lydia had

given the Queen a hug!! Lydia's story makes chilling reading. Her father and mother were killed by sol-

diers of the Lord's Resistance Army and Lydia and her six siblings fled into the bush. They survived and

their Grandmother managed to send them to an aunt in Kampala. Unfortunately their aunt lost her job so

the children had to return to Northern Uganda. Here Watoto found them and provided counselling,

therapy and loving families in their Watoto village and today Lydia is a loving, happy 10 year old.

Women and children are receiving help to recover from their horrendous ordeals at the hands of the

Lord's Resistance Army. The Director of the project in the north told the Sunday Telegraph that, “If you

chase after a snake that bit you, its poison races faster round your body and you die quicker.” She says

“We say to the women 'You can either choose

revenge and chase the snake or you can choose life.'

The best revenge is to survive and succeed and that

is what the women and children are doing.”

So, thank you to all who came, who hosted children,

who helped with meals, who cleaned church and

who counted money. We were able to send

£646.99 to Watoto Child Care Ministries as a result

of the freewill offering.

If you wish to know more about Watoto and you

have access to the Internet, then go to

www.watoto.com.

THE TRENTSIDE FEDERATION – SCHOOL NEWS

We had an interesting event at St Martin's recently in connection with ‘Noise Action Week’ 21 - 26 May.

Noise Action Week is coordinated by the National Environmental group 'Environmental Protection UK' and is an

initiative to introduce children to developing an awareness of domestic noise nuisance. It is all about communities

working together across the UK to combat noise problems. The children in both Infants and Juniors participated in

activities that included role-play and various scenarios to act out then discuss. These workshops encouraged them

to think carefully about excessive noise that affects our neighbourhoods and can impact on health, such as incessant

barking dogs and music being played at an excessive and anti-social volume. It also encouraged the children to think

about the different people who make up our communities and their work and lifestyles such as night shift

workers. It was very interesting and further supports the development of good citizenship skills and consideration

for our neighbours and communities. The workshops were led by Sue Housley from North Lincolnshire Council.

Noise Action Week came shortly before ‘Jubilee Fever’ gripped both schools! West Butterwick Infants began, some

weeks before, planning a special Jubilee Fete with a ‘grand auction’. This ambitious project had involved our

youngest pupils in developing their persuasive writing and drawing up a list of businesses to contact to ask for

support and donations with raffle prizes. Local businesses were very

generous and so we say a big ‘thank you’ to them. On the afternoon of the

Fete (Thursday 31st May) there was a ‘soak the teacher’ whereby Mr Cross

had a steady stream of wet sponges heading his way, face-painting, stalls

selling items made by staff and pupils as well as lots of delicious cakes. A

very impressive sight was the children themselves running the auction! It

was a most enjoyable afternoon and raised almost £500. The children are

going to buy an African drum with some of the proceeds.

St Martin’s school held its Jubilee Celebrations on two separate occasions in

school – a ‘Kings and Queens’ disco (organised by a committee of pupils) on

Thursday 31st May and then an Open Afternoon on Saturday 2nd June. The

Open Afternoon provided the community with a chance to see the

impressive work the children had produced in connection with our

Monarchy’s history. In particular, there was some very splendid hand-sewn

bunting designed by the school’s Sewing Club which featured Jubilee icons on

one side and Olympic icons on the other. In addition to this there was a

wide range of activities and stalls, such as ‘Ferret Handling’, ‘Soak the

Teacher’ (Miss Dance and Mrs Lewis this time!), Face-Painting’, ‘Find the

Queen’ , Toss the Crown, Lucky Dip and a delicious Hog Roast. Well done

to all the children who planned and organised their own stalls for this

occasion. The rain stayed away and a super time was had by all. Thanks

once again to the people who supported this event as part of the Owston

Ferry Village Jubilee Celebrations.

We are now looking forward to the remainder of this

term with our joint Trentside Federation residential visit

to Caythorpe Court as well as Sports Afternoons.

The Greatest Show on Earth

Where have all the tickets gone? Like many other people, I applied for Olympic tickets but didn’t get

through the ballot. So I shall be watching ‘the greatest show on earth’ from ‘the best seat in the house’ –

that is in front of the TV.

Is it really ‘the greatest show on earth’? How about the River Pageant celebrating HM Queen Elizabeth’s

Diamond Jubilee or the concert in front of Buckingham Palace or the pomp and ceremony of the Service

of Thanksgiving in St Paul’s Cathedral? Were these not contenders to be called ‘the greatest show on

earth’? The enthusiasm of the crowds speaks for itself.

How about ‘the best seat in the house’? Yes – but where’s the atmosphere, the cheering, the celebration

of victory? I have sat on the terraces at football matches and watched the snooker in silence at The

Crucible in Sheffield. It’s totally different from

watching ‘Match of the Day’ or highlights from the

day’s play.

For some people this year, the greatest show on

earth will be a wedding, the birth of a child or a

special anniversary. The best seat in the house is

obvious. When it comes to God, He is the greatest

show on earth and the best seat in the house is

seating or kneeling before Him.

Family fuelled cricket tournament

A group of locals have put their heads together to organise a cricket

tournament and family day at Outcast Cricket Club, Belton on Sunday 15th

July.

The newly formed group, the Smegal Sixes are organising this event in

memory of Liam Fitzgerald who sadly died from kidney cancer at 42. The

group are now established as a Macmillan Supporter Group as they wanted to

give back to the charity for the support given to Liam through his cancer

journey.

Anthony Fitzgerald, Liam’s brother is a main driving force behind organising the event and commented

“We wanted to support Macmillan due to ….please feel free to add in whatever comments you like here.

The organisers are thinking of the whole family whilst planning this event. Youngsters can enjoy the

children’s entertainer and later on entertainment includes a performance by Steve Womack as well as

some local bands. Food and drinks will be available throughout the day (feel free to expand here about

what will be available).

Amy Hebdon, local Fundraising Manager added; “I hope people will show their support for this event. Not

only will people benefit from such a wonderful day, they’ll be helping to raise vital funds for those affected

by cancer. We rely on 96% of voluntary donations so without events like this, we wouldn’t be here as a

charity to support people through their cancer journey”.

Dear readers,

Lack of stimuli when driving on motorways means that it takes extra concentration to stay alert and ob-

servant. Yes, motorways can be boring. You don’t have to accelerate, change gear or brake much, there’s

relatively little steering input needed. The Sat Nav tells you what junction you need. Automatic gearboxes,

cruise control, power steering, even auto lights, and wipers do all the work for you.

The view is often slow passing scenery and it’s very easy for your mind to wander in these conditions.

Consider taking an alternative, more interesting route, perhaps on an A or B-road. Check your map for

parallel routes or set your Sat Nav to avoid motorways.

Open a window. Cold air will liven you up for a brief period. Turn the air–conditioning to cold and direct

a vent onto your face. Disengage your cruise control. Put the radio on or start a conversation with your

passenger. Stop for a tea or coffee or caffeine drink as soon as it’s safely possible. Do this every two

hours, to maintain your concentration.

Carry sufficient drinking water to keep you hydrated.

A good driver is always mentally alert, and motorway driving becomes like a mobile high-stake game of

chess. You have to plan your route, anticipate traffic movement, and be ultra-observant while constantly

checking speeds and distances in front and behind your vehicle.

Good drivers have excellent lane discipline and are always in the correct lane for their speed and planned

route. They constantly observe the behaviour of other vehicles around them, including regular checking of

their mirrors.

You should stay in the left-hand lane wherever pos-

sible, but don’t get so hung up on this that you’re

constantly driving in and out of a slow lane.

Drivers on UK motorways often display poor lane

discipline. This causes frustration and problems for

other drivers and can even lead to crashes. You’ll

often find traffic moving into the right-hand lane, to

avoid day-dreamers in the middle lane. Inconsider-

ate drivers blocking a middle lane of the motorway

are a common problem. Never be tempted to teach

them a lesson. Don’t flash your headlights or sound

the horn. Simply overtake them as safely and as

soon as you can.

Driving faster than 70mph on UK motorways is

illegal. Good drivers travel at an appropriate speed

for the road conditions. However it’s easy for your

speed to creep up in a modern car, so check your

speedometer regularly, or use your cruise control.

Motorways are the UK’s safest roads. But they are

still the scenes of numerous incidents and many are

policed by speed regulation devices designed to

maintain traffic safety.
