• CANADA: America wanted Canada in it’s need to expand

Effects
The Actual War: War of 1812
• US Army had 10,000-12,000 soldiers
• US had 17 naval ships; Britain had 1,000
• US had very little $$$; Britain had 40x the tax revenue (money from it’s citizens)
• BUT Britain was at war with France
• PHASE 1: America tries to take Canada = FAIL
• PHASE 2: America starts winning and the war ends
The Treaty of Ghent
• War ended
• Impressment ended
• Free trade was reinstated
• US and Britain were now friends

increased
• With the spread of the American people and trade growing, there was a great need for improvements in: – Transportation – Communication – Farming – Production of manufactured goods
