Reasons You Need a Savings Account

According to the National Council on Aging, almost 90 percent of the financial abuse committed against older Americans is done by someone they know. More than ever, it is imperative for seniors to select a trustworthy person to properly manage their finances and personal affairs. Here are tips to help choose the right financial caregiver and prevent financial abuse: • When delegating financial decisions, make sure it’s someone you trust. If you are unable to facilitate financial transactions, carefully choose a trustworthy person to act as your agent in all financial matters. • Know who is in your home. Conduct a thorough background check on all individuals you hire for personal care or home care services. Check references and credentials before you let them into your personal space. • Never sign something you don’t understand. Consult with a financial advisor or attorney before signing any document that appears suspicious or unclear.• Understand the terms of assigning a Power of Attorney. Granting someone POA gives them the authority to act and make decisions on your behalf, including managing and having access to your bank and other financial accounts. • Always trust your instincts. Exploiters and abusers are very skilled. They can be very charming and forceful in their efforts to exploit you. Don’t be fooled – if something doesn’t feel right, it may not be.• Safeguard your personal information. Shred old bills, junk mail, bank statements and other personal documents you no longer need. • Keep personal items out of plain sight. Lock up checkbooks, credit cards and other monetary instruments to prevent unauthorized use.

On April 26, 2018, the IRS released an update to its Health Savings Account (HSA) contribution limit for families, returning the limit to $6,900 for 2018 (plus $1,000 if the accountholder is making a catch-up contribution).

A savings account is a good place to keep money safe for future needs and in particular, useful for money you may need within the next few years. Saving for Major Purchases – If you’re planning to buy a house or car, you’ll probably need a down payment to qualify for a loan and get the best terms. A savings account is a good place to store and build on that down payment.Upcoming Vacations or Other Expenses – Enjoy your vacation even more by not going into debt. Build up a vacation fund by transferring money from your earnings monthly. Get it out of your checking account so you’re not tempted to spend it. Emergency Savings – Life surprises us. An emergency fund can help you avoid taking on toxic debt when the unexpected happens.Adding money to your savings account can be done through mobile deposit, online banking, at a teller window, as a direct deposit from payroll or a recurring transfer from your Silver Lake Bank checking account. Ask a SLB Customer Service Representative to help you get started saving today.

Directions1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. In a medium bowl, stir together the pretzel

crumbs and sugar. Pour the melted butter over top and stir with a fork until all of the crumbs are evenly moistened. Press into the bottom of a 9×13-inch baking pan. Bake for 10 min, then cool completely.

2. Using an electric mixer, beat the cream cheese and sugar on medium speed until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes. Using a rubber spatula, gently fold in the Cool Whip. Spread evenly over the crust and refrigerate while you prepare the topping.

3. Place the dry Jello in a large bowl and add the boiling water. Stir for at least 2 minutes, until the gelatin is completely dissolved. Stir in the cold water. Refrigerate for 1½ hours or until slightly thickened (will be the consistency of egg whites). Stir in the strawberries and pour over the cream cheese layer. Refrigerate for at least 3 hours, or until the Jello layer is set. Cut into squares to serve. Leftovers should be stored, covered, in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
