CONTROLLING OUR PASSIONSby Father Peter Salmas, Pastor

Passion. It is a word that evokes many images and references, manyemotions and shortcomings of man. According to the Fathers of ourOrthodox Tradition, the passions are to be avoided or at the very leastcontrolled. Saint John Climacus cautions monastics regarding the pas-sions and not surprisingly nearly half of his treatise “The Ladder ofDivine Ascent” is devoted to dealing with our struggle against the pas-sions. To be sure our challenge is to control our passions so that thevirtues of God’s grace may take hold within us and allow union withGod.

Yet in our struggle to overcome and control the passions thatare so detrimental to our spiritual growth, our own power and self will

is not enough. We are in need of God and His Grace to regain thevirtues so necessary for eternal life.

Our Lord’s passion was in fact the imposing of our own bro-kenness and the evil work upon the only One who could save us, JesusChrist. For was not His suffering a result of our fear and despondencyas expressed in our malice and slander towards Him? Did not our prideand vainglory, our lust for power, bring about our own jealousy andenvy? Was not His mercy and compassion responsible for our hatredand anger?

You see the passions that I just mentioned: malice, envy, ha-tred, anger, pride, vainglory, fear, despondency, slander, and lust, areall unnatural expressions of our God given nature. Unfortunately, through temptation and sin, first manifest in the Garden of Eden, ourrelationship with our Creator was severed. The great chasm betweenGod and us could only be bridge by God. Nothing we would do couldbridge that gap. Yet we are slow to learn this great and awesome les-son.

That is what we celebrate each year at Pascha, the bridging ofthe gap between God and man and the unending love and mercy thatour creating Lord and savior Jesus Christ offers each of us.

The Gospel reading of the Fourth Sunday of Lent shares withus this great lesson. In fact every Gospel lesson shares this miraculousfact, that God gave His only begotten Son that we might share in theeternal life prepared for us. In our small effort to fast and pray andforgive, as well as to seek forgiveness, we are witnesses to His greatact of love and mercy. When we move towards Him, as small as oursteps may be . . . He is there waiting and hoping that His God-givenvirtues, placed within us at Baptism, will overcome our earthly andmundane passions, and that our ascent to Him is complete.

A life changing commemoration of His Passion can only meana fuller and more complete celebration of His Resurrection.

Kalo Pascha . . . Kali Anastasi.

AN ORTHODOX RESPONSE(third in a series of excerpts from An Eastern Orthodox Response toEvangelical Claims by Father Paul O’Callaghan, Antiochian Arch-diocese)

Can the Saints Hear Our Prayers? (5) How can you know if the saintscan even hear you?

The experience of the Church confirms that they do. God has beenpleased to grant many miracles and blessings by the intercessions ofthe saints.

The prayers of a righteous person are just as effective after deathas they are before, if not even more so. God glorifies his saints in theHoly Spirit (cf. John 17:22). A holy Russian monk, Silouan, explainedit like this: “Once upon a time I did not understand how it was that theholy inhabitants of heaven could see our lives, but . . . I realized thatthey see us in the Holy Spirit and know our entire lives . . . In theKingdom of Heaven the holy saints look upon the glory of our LordJesus Christ; but through the Holy Spirit they see too the sufferings ofmen on earth.”

It is through their intimate union with God that the saints seeus, hear us, and know us. Jesus showed that the departed can be awareof events on earth when he asserted “Your father Abraham rejoiced tosee my day. He saw it and was glad” (John 8:56)

Scripture and Prayer to the Saints (6) At any rate, such a practice isunknown in the Scriptures and the early Church.

Scripture makes it clear that some men were especially powerful inter-cessors with God (Jas. 5:16-18, Job 42:8). Yet this is not limited to thislife only. In the second book of Maccabees, dropped by the Protestantsfrom the Bible, the prophet Jeremiah is represented as constantly pray-ing before God for the people of Israel (II Macc. 15: 14) . This doctrinewas known and accepted in the early church as well; inscriptions onearly Christian tombs ask the prayers of the departed, and documents

such as “The Martyrdom of Polycarp,” testify to it. Church Fathersthat are often revered by Protestant Evangelicals, such as St. August-ine, St. Athanasius, and St. John Chrysostom, all accepted this catholicand orthodox doctrine.

ON THE FEAST OF THE ANNUNCIATIONby Konstantine Salmas

My first thought is that I have nothing theological to say. Everyonehere is probably either younger or older than me. The young aren’tgoing to find me particularly insightful and I should be listening to thepeople my senior...not talking to them about the wisdom of God. Onthe other hand, I feel compelled to speak about the Church, and theFeast we begin to celebrate this evening demands attention from us. Infact, there is no better time than lent to talk about exactly what it is weare doing here on earth in this vast universe. There is no better timebecause the Church, during these months, tells us what we should bedoing and why we should be doing it. We should be faithful represen-tatives of the word of God. This means we need to believe what it iswe say about the faith of the Church. This faith: God opens the way tosalvation for all in the death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Thecatch: belief in His promise, a belief that implies a new way of exist-ence.

The feast of the Annunciation brings us into direct contact withthe ultimately embarrassing and stark images of the garden of Edenbecause both events have to do with belief in the promise of God. Theverbal interaction between Gabriel and the Theotokos reminds me ofthe sort of interaction we read about in the garden, when God wantsman to be with him. There has been no rupture in relations, a rupturewhich becomes the center of the Old Testament Scriptural writingsand is actually brought into a stark focus with the coming of Christ. The rupture is that people don’t believe the promises of God. He saysthis. They do that. He gives them over to the that. That’s how it goes.Over and over again. The model for this tense relationship betweenthe Hebrews and God is the garden event. He places them in a safe

place. He saves them. They are in the garden of Eden. God sayssomething. Adam and Eve want something else, something more. Then, God gives them over to this, to the god or city with whom theyplayed the harlot. They believed the serpent more than they believedGod, so God gave them over to kind of life the serpent says god wantsfor them. All because they did not believe, at the start of the situation, what God told them. Implied in belief, here, is action, a way of being,a mode of existence.

At the very beginning, there was no tension in this mode ofexistence. Adam and Eve believed in God’s word, in God’s plan, thesame way the Theotokos believes Gabriel about God’s proposition. She might be surprised. Who wouldn’t be, but she holds her own andshe believes about Christ what Gabriel tells her. I think it is so impor-tant to notice the similarity between the interaction between God andAdam before the betrayal of God’s word and the interaction betweenGabriel and the Theotokos because they are both beginnings withoutthe tension that develops as people misrepresent and misremember whatGod promised, both in the garden and as the Word, Jesus Christ, throughwhom the world was created and recreated during his earthly life, death, and resurrection. These beginnings are both images of salvation inthat the people do not want anything else. The garden, then, is animage of salvation. Then, after a thousand pages of Scripture, there isagain ease of relations between God and man. With Gabriel and theTheotokos we are given another image of salvation. After a thousandpages.

When we read even one of the in- between pages, we see therupture and tension because of the harlotry of Israel and Judah, despitethe salvation God brought to them when he brought them out Egyptwith the promise of a land flowing with milk and honey. This thou-sand pages of tension should make us wary of the destructive direc-tions we tend to go. Even though God saved Israel from slavery inEgypt, it wasn’t long before they wanted to go back to Egypt. Eventhough God offers us salvation in Christ - remission of sins and lifeeverlasting - I think we turn our heads elsewhere because we don’tbelieve in the words of God the same way the Hebrews didn’t believethat God would lead them to the promised land. Because of this, they

played the harlot and misrepresented the word of God by turning forsalvation to other gods and other ways. So, God, gives them over tothe people for whom they pine. In the garden, they wanted the world,so he gave them over to the world. Most often, this is probably thecase with us. We are not far removed from the embarassing images inthe Garden. DSL, genetic enhancement, and terrorist destruction arewhat we have most obviously given ourselves as realistic options forthe future of every side of the globe. The movements in the gardenleading to expulsion out into the world are the same movements thattake place daily in our lives and in the world around us. We didn’t andwe don’t know which way is up because the the promise of salvation isno longer weighty. We also choose the other way.

This is why our faith in the promise of God’s word has to beginwith the understanding that we are not entitled to anything. This is partof God’s makeup. What makes the God of Scripture, the God of thechurch, is that we are dependant upon him for everything - for life, forthe beginnings of our makeup, and for His grace, that in the end savesus. God makes, we initiate. He creates out of nothing. We make fromwhat we have. We choose the idols and he gives us over to them untilwe come back to him on our own, aware of our sin. What comes to usis given by a God who wants us to listen to his instruction. This meanswe are always at a certain kind of disadvantage in relation to God. Heknows that it is his instruction versus all of the other instructions thatare out there vying for our allegiance, looking for us to listen to thewords they have to say. The following passage from Jeremiah is thesame sentiment that is attached to the garden event. Each time you hearIsrael and Judah, replace it with Adam and Eve. Jeremiah 33:26 - Forthe sons of Israel and the sons of Judah have done nothing but evil inmy sight from their youth . . . I will remove it from my sight because ofall of the evil of the sons of Israel which they did to provoke me toanger. They have turned to me their back and not their face; and thoughI have taught them persistently they have not listened to receive in-struction.”

In the next passage, though, we see how the presence of God’sgrace condemns us and saves us at the same time. We see the sub-stance of the weight of his plan of salvation. Jeremiah speaks for God,

“Just as I have brought all this great evil upon this people, so I willbring upon them all the good I promise them.” In affirming our beliefin God’s promise of salvation, we are recognizing the ultimate controlthat God has over the universe and the salvific mode in which he oper-ates to bring about good for those who face him. He gives us over toour idols until we come around when he lets us in on his plan to fulfillthe promise. He always leaves an opening for us. In the garden, theymisrepresented his word. Explusion from the garden instead of utterdestruction. In Jeremiah, they misrepresented his word. He gave themover to the ways of false gods, instead of utter destruction. In Christ,he fulfills a promise he made to the world, but let the Hebrews in onfirst. The Annunciation gives to us an image of salvation, of the prom-ised peace he initiates with the world. The final word is given, thepromise fulfilled. An active life in Christ makes sure we believe whatwe say about the message of the church because it guarantees we willfeel the weightiness of grace - how it simultaneously condemns andsaves us and the world.

CHURCH MATTERS : THE CARING JARby Jenny Cladis, Parish Council President

We have all heard comments on tithing, such as the following, by peoplewho may be on the lower rungs of the Ladder of Saint John Climacus.

o What more do they want? I pay for all of the luncheonsthat are given at the church. There are also the baptismfees, wedding fees, Sunday candles, etc.

o My spouse and I disagree on the amount we should giveat this time, so we don’t give.

o We will give in a few years after our children are grownand on their own.

o I am expecting a pay raise next year; then I should be ableto budget some money for the church.

o I do a lot for the church. I frequently work in kitchen, andsometimes I bus the dishes after eating a luncheon that I

In the last part of the 2003 school year, the students of the four upperlevels - in Theodora’s, Katerina’s, Kosta’s and Alexander’s classes- were asked to participate in the First Annual Speech Contest, spon-sored by the Hellenic Education Commission of our Diocese. Theywrote a speech regarding the upcoming Olympic Games being held inAthens this summer. The winners of this contest, Athina Panagiotidesin the upper, and Chrysa Perakis in the lower level, later competedwith students from Saint Nickolas Greek School in San Jose. Athinawon first place and Chrysa second. We congratulate these two studentsand all the other students from our school who wrote speeches. Theyall did a fine job and here’s a short paragraph from their essays.

pay for. Furthermore, I support the Festival by attendingat least one day.

o I just can’t until I pay off my new Hummer.o Let the rich people support the church!o God loves a cheerful giver, but since I cannot be cheerful

about giving, I don’t give.

The Bible clearly calls each of us to contribute a portion (10%)of what we receive. Let’s face it. We can all do it if we really want to.All we need to do is to reset our priorities. That takes deep faith. Ourexpenditures clearly define our priorities. Can we justify them to ourLord as we appeal to Him for further blessings?

I recently read a story about The Charity Jar. It seems that acouple with modest means and several children decided to have a projectin which they could all participate. Even though they were not wealthy, they did believe in the three T’s, Tithing, Treasure and Talent. Theygave 10% of their income to the church and participated in all of theappropriate church activities. For their project they decided to helpothers in a very personal way.

They devised a Charity Jar. The family began by pooling all ofthe change that they accumulated each day. Also, they retrieved moneythat fell on the floor, under the couch, in the car, on the street, et ceteraand put it in the jar.

After several weeks they counted the money that had been grow-ing in the Charity Jar. It amounted to $30! They now needed to decidewhere and to whom the money should go. The children asked if theycould buy groceries for their friends who lived down the street. Theirfather had lost his job. While he was looking for a new job the mothertook in washing so that she could be at home with the little ones. Theneedy family was so overwhelmed by their gesture, that the mothervolunteered to do the giving family’s laundry free!

The Charity Jar was refilled several times before the familywas able to get back on their feet. And, so it went: The Charity Jargave the giving family great joy in being able to help others in theirtime of need.

25th of March 1821Every March, we celebrate the Independence of the Greek nation fromthe Turks. This national day is the 25th of March and is a very impor-tant day for Greeks. At Holy Cross Greek School, we will honor thatday, with respect, with a community-wide celebration on Sunday,March 28 at the Church of the Annunciation, San Francisco. Thechildren will dress in national costumes and will proudly carry the flagand participate in the parade. The day will include patriotic poetry andsongs. Our PTO will offer refreshments. Come join us!

Their Tithing was to the church, their Treasure was what theyhad accumulated in the Caring Jar, and their Talent was applied towarddevising ways to help others.

When our children were young, we taught them to give 10% oftheir allowance and whatever else they received to their Sunday schoolclass every Sunday. Now as adults, they continue to give a large per-centage of what they make toward the church. — At one time, ourdaughter’s family was earning only $3,000 a month. That was notmuch money to support a family with two children in the Bay Area.Yet, the first check they wrote at the end of each month was for $300 totheir church! We thank God for blessing our children so abundantly!

God gave his only begotten son to be crucified that we maylive! Is our 10% too extravagant for the lives He touches through ourchurch!

Imagine for a moment that, for what seemed like well thought out rea-sons at the time, you decided not to have taxes removed from yourpaychecks last year. The money really came in handy and you finishedthe year feeling financially flush. But now, your wife says, April 15th isjust a week away and you owe taxes on all those earnings. How do youthink you would feel? Nauseated, worried, anxious, and probably wish-ing you had done things differently. A small part of you even considersskipping taxes completely, but only for a second, since you know wellthe dire consequences of doing so. And, deep down, you do understandthe importance of paying your fair share (and no doubt wish your fel-low Americans felt the same and paid their fair share as well).

Having pictured yourself in this predicament, the majority ofyou will acknowledge the wisdom of paying toward financial obliga-tions with each week’s payroll. Similarly, no one would dispute theintelligence and foresight involved in paying mortgage, credit card billsand utilities on a monthly basis rather than anticipating one humongousbill at the end of each year. This concept of fiscal responsibility is onewith which even our high school students are familiar.

Our church, which is your church, pays its expenses on amonthly basis from funds contributed through a fair share apportion-ment of each member family. This stewardship is each person’s God-given responsibility toward the financial well-being of our entire com-munity. Now, what makes any one family think they are exceptions tothis concept? Why would anyone think it reasonable or prudent to de-lay paying this amount until year’s end? Can anyone possibly thinkthat the Church should stand last in line behind all your other credi-tors?

As St. Paul teaches in 1Corinthians16:1-4: “On the first day ofthe week let each one of you lay something aside, storing up as he mayprosper, that there be no collections when I come.” Along the sameline, the Bible is filled with examples of families and communitiesgiving back to God the “pick of the crop”, the first of the harvest, andthe best of all gained through the beneficence of God’s generosity tous.

The majority of Parish Council members have on-line bankingand understand the ease of meeting stewardship pledges with sched-uled monthly payments, just like paying mortgages and taxes. If youwould prefer a debit from your credit card, Hilton, in the office canarrange for that monthly charge.

Take a good long look at your priorities, your indebtedness toGod and the frequency of thanksgiving in your daily life. Waiting untilyour deathbed to pay what you owe is not an option!

The highlights being some solos performed by Anthony Cairo,George Makreas , Stephanie Clements , Kettie Fotinos , andConstance Paraskevas. The kids did extremely well, brought the crowdto its feet during the dancing part of the competition.

The ZOHROI Dance group directed by Valerie Paraskevas,Vicky Najjar and Khara-Maria Salmas also placed in the Choral Com-petition by taking third overall out of 10 groups in the division. ZOHROIperformed a Samos Wedding suite in addition to signing the Churchhymn.

ZOHROI also placed 5th over all in the dance competition bydancing a suite from Asvestates Thrace for their semifinal round andalso dancing a Cretan Panygeri for their final round with live music.Their final round performance had the entire intermediate division talk-ing about how well they performed and they were congratulated by notonly their family and friends but by their competition as well. I alsowould like to mention that our wonderful Deacon Athanasios partici-pated in the final round of competition with the ZOHROI group com-ing out on stage and joining Greg Gieseker at the table scene of theCretan round.

A special thank you to Mr. Ted Pappas & Mr. Peter Bibbeswho helped the dance groups this past year during the Loukoumathessales! With out them we would not have been able to pull this off, sothank you again to both of you for you all of your help, love and dedi-cation to our dance groups.

FROM DEACON ATHANASIOS

I would like to wish you a blessed Triodion. The Triodion is a bookthat we use in our Church during this period starting three weeks be-fore Great Lent and ending at Holy Saturday. It takes the name Triodionfrom the number three and the ode. The Ode is a set of the hymns thatwe chant during the services of Othros. During this period we use threeodes that come from the book of Triodion according to the theme ofthe day. It is a custom on the Saturday before Triodion starts to put thebook of Triodion at the icon of Christ with the chanter receiving thebook from the priest who is serving. At that point the priest wishes tothe chanter and everyone present to have a blessed Triodion becausethis is the period of preparation for us to celebration the Holy Passionof our Lord Jesus Christ and especially His Glorious Resurrection. Lastmonth I asked the theological question if it was necessary for our LordJesus Christ to be circumcised? Of course we can ask the same ques-tions about the Holy Passion and the Crucifixion? Saint Athanasios theGreat in his book “On the Incarnation” answers all these questionsabout how necessary it is for our salvation. Our salvation is based onthe Divine Economy and as Saint Athanasios said “God became manso man to become with the grace god.” This grace is the obedience toour heavenly Father.

It is very important to understand when our week starts. As youknow the name of the days in Greek are numerical names (?e?te?a,???t?, ?eta?t? etc) with the exception of Saturday and Sunday. Satur-day because the Lord took rest on the seventh day received the name ofthe Lord. The same thing happens with the first day (??? t ? ) but after

made the sign of the Cross on it, told her: Sleep here.” And after hehad prepared for himself an improvised place to sleep on the ground, ashort distance away, he completed his prayers and lay down to rest.

During the middle of the night he awakened and saw a strangespectacle; he saw a shining pathway leading heavenward from the spotwhere Taisia was sleeping and Angels of God leading the soul of therepentant sinner upwards along it.

Immediately he got up and, rushing toward Taisia, tapped herlightly with his foot. Once he realized that she was indeed dead, heprostrated with his face to the earth and entreated God to reveal to himwhether He had accepted Taisia’s repentance. Praying in this manner,he heard a voice from God, which said to him: “The single hour forwhich this women repented was more quickly received than that ofmany who spend years in repentance, since the repentance of the latteris not as earnest as hers.”

the Holy Resurrection of our Lord it received the name of the Lord(? ? ? ?a??) in His honor. This is the practice from the early church andwe find references as such in the book of Acts. This is the reason thatwe have the Divine Liturgy on the first day of the week.

The first day of the Triodion is the Sunday of the Publican andthe Pharisee, then the Second week is the Sunday of the Prodigal Son,Sunday of Judgment (Meatfare,) Sunday of Forgiveness (Chessefare.)As you see the Church prepares us step by step for the Great Lentbecause the Sunday after the Cheesefare we have the Clean Monday(?a?a?a ?e?te?a.) Our Lord Jesus Christ has as a principle love, com-passion and forgiveness. He understands very well our weakness but atthe same time He wants us to love Him back. He knows that we are notall the same just as our fingers are different sizes the one with the otherso each of us even though different still have our purpose and are partof the whole. Our Lord wants us to try our best to be as good athletesrunning the good race so that we might receive the prize.

During Triodion is a time of preparation. It is time for all of usto meet with our spiritual father so that we may receive guidelines onhow to fast and receive his blessing. Let us remember that humility isthe higher virtue and all of us we have to try to be humble and obedientespecially during this period not only to our church but also to ourparents.

Let us participate in as many services as we can during thisblessed period allowing our Lord to dwell in us so that we may becometruly a temple of the Holy Spirit. Let us also remember that He is theTrue Light and the more often that we receive His Spiritual Light webecome like a small candle. It is up to us to keep our candle lit as moreoften we receive Him.

WISDOM/REFLECTION

The parents of a young girl by the name of Taisia died and left her anorphan. The young woman converted her home into a guest house forthe Fathers of a neighboring skeet. For many years she thus welcomedthem and showed them care through her hospitality.

After some time, however, having spent all that she had in herhospitable work for the Fathers, she fell into need and became poor.

So it was that she fell in with some perverted people who ledher to change her way of life and to abandon the path of virtue. Theresult of these destructive associations of hers was that Taisia flour-ished ever more in the way of sin, ending up, in time, in prostitution. When the Fathers heard of her plight, it much saddened them.

So, they called upon Abba John the Short and said to him: “Wehave learned that our sister Taisia is living in sin. It is well known that, when she was still able, she showed us her love and hospitality andgave us rest. It is now time for us to help her as much as we can. Takeupon yourself the task, then, of meeting with her and try, with the wis-dom that God has given you, to set her aright and to pull her out of themud of debauchery.”

The Elder thus went to the den of sin where Taisia was staying.“Inform your mistress, please, that I am asking for her,” he told the oldwoman who was the doorkeeper of the house of ill repute.

“Get out of here, monk,” the old women told him angrily. “Youmonks early on took all that she had and have left her poor now.”

“Please go and do as I asked you,” the Elder insisted, “becauseI aim to bring her great benefit.”

The old woman finally stubbornly went upstairs and yelled toTaisia. that a monk wanted to visit her.

“Those monks,” Taisia thought, on hearing whom it was whowas asking for her, “frequently live near the Red Sea and find valuablepearls.”

Having adorned herself with special care, she lay down on herbed and said to the old woman porter: “Bring the monk to me.”

So, in fact, shortly Abba John entered the appointed room andsat near her. Looking carefully into her face, he said emotionally: “Whatis it that you have against Jesus, and why do you blame him for comingto such a state as this?”

She, upon hearing these words, was totally paralyzed. At thesame time, the Elder lowered his head and began to weep in sobs.

Shaken, Taisia then asked him: “Abba, why are you crying?”Abba John, raising his head a little, and then lowering it again, said:“How can I see Satan playing on your face and not cry?”

At this remark, the sinful Taisia asked: “Is there such a thing asrepentance, Father?”

“Yes, there is,” the Elder, replied. “Then take me with you,”Taisia said, “ and direct mde as you will.”

“So, let us go now.”At the beckoning of the Elder, the repentant sinner immedi-

ately arose to follow him.The Elder was beset by astonishment, since he saw that Taisia

had no interest in settling her household matters, but left things just asthey were and followed him.

By the time they reached the desert, it had become completelydark. Abba John prepared a little place to sleep for her and, having

Saint Photios lived during the nine century, and came from a family of zealous Chris-tians. His father had died a martyr’s death in defense of holy icons. Saint Photiosreceived an excellent education and, having family relations with the imperial house,he occupied the position of first state secretary in the Senate. His contemporaries saidof him: “He so distinguished himself with knowledge in almost all the secular sci-ences, that it rightfully might be possible to take into account the glory of his age andcompare it with the ancients.” The young successor to the throne, Michael, and thefuture Enlightener of the Slavs, the Equal-to the-Apostles Cyril, were taught the sci-ences by him. Deep Christian piety protected Saint Photios from being seduced withthe charms of court life — with all his soul he yearned towards monasticism.

In 857 the co-ruler with emperor Michael, Bardas, expelled Patriarch Ignatiosfrom the Constantinople cathedra-see. The bishops, knowing the piety and extensiveknowledge of Photios, informed the emperor about him as a man worthy to occupy thearch-pastoral throne. Saint Photios with humility accepted the proposal. Over the courseof 6 days he was led through the hierarchical positions, and on the day of the Nativityof Christ he was ordained bishop with elevation to the patriarchal throne. Soon how-ever there began discord within the Church, stirred up by the expulsion of PatriarchIgnatios from the cathedra. In the year 861 there was convened a Council for ending ofthe unrest, and at which was affirmed the deposition of Ignatios and the affirming ofPhotios as patriarch. Pope Nicholas I, the envoys of whom were present at this Coun-cil, hoped by affirming Photios as patriarch therein to subordinate him to his power, but not having received what he expected, he betrayed Photios with an anathema at aRoman Council. From that moment there began for Saint Photios, and lasting to thevery end of his life, his opposition to the papal bullying and encroachment upon theOrthodox Church of the East. In 864 the Bulgarian land voluntarily converted to Chris-tianity. The Bulgarian prince Boris was baptized as they proposed, by Patriarch Photioshimself, after which Saint Photios dispatched an archbishop and priests for the Bap-tism of the Bulgarian people, and in the year 865 Saints Cyril and Methodios weredispatched for the preaching of Christ in the Slavonic language. But the partisans ofthe pope incited the distrust of the Bulgarians towards the preachers of the EasternChurch. The calamitous situation in Bulgaria because of an invasion by the Germansforced them to seek help in the West, and the Bulgarian prince turned to the pope witha request to send his bishops. Having arrived in Bulgaria, the papal legates beganactively to affirm their Latin teachings and usages in place of the Orthodox. SaintPhotios, being a firm defender of truth and denouncer of untruth, informed the EasternChurch by means of a circular letter about the deeds of the pope, indicating that thefalling away of the Roman Church from its ancient Orthodoxy was not only in rituals,

but also in confession of faith. A Council was convened, censuring the arrogance ofthe West.

In 867 Basil the Macedonian seized the imperial throne, having murderedthe emperor Michael. Saint Photios denounced the murderer and did not permit himto partake of the Holy Mysteries of Christ. For this he was removed from the patriar-chal throne and locked up in a monastery under guard. In his place was again putPatriarch Ignatios. A Council was convened for an investigation into the conduct ofSaint Photios: this Council was made with the participation of papal legates, whodemanded of the Council the signing of a document about the unconditional subordi-nation of all the Church to the judgment of the pope. The Eastern bishops, not inagreement with this, entered into an argument with the legates. Summoned to theCouncil, Saint Photios answered all the accusations of the legates with silence, andonly to the question of the judges as to whether he wished to repent, did he reply:“Wherefore do ye consider yourselves judges?” The opponents of Photios after longdisputes gained the victory, and their judgment being baseless, they pronounced ananathema upon Patriarch Photios and the bishops defending him. The saint was sentto prison for 7 years, and by his own testimony, “he thanked the Lord, for patientlyenduring His judges...”

During this period of time the Latin clergy were expelled from Bulgariabecause of the arrogance of the pope, and Patriarch Ignatios sent there his bishops. In879, after the death of Patriarch Ignatios, there was convened a Council (many fa-thers of the Church call it the Eighth Ecumenical), and again Saint Photios was ac-knowledged as the lawful pastor of the Church. Pope John, knowing Photios person-ally, through his envoys declared at the Council the annulling of all the former papaldecisions about Photios. The Council acknowledged the inalterable invariability ofthe Nicean-Constantinople Creed, rejecting the Latin distortion (“filioque”), and itacknowledged the independence and equality of both thrones and both Churches(Western and Eastern). The Council decided to abolish usages and rituals in the Bul-garia church introduced by the Latins, which ended their governance there.

Under emperor Basil’s successor, Leo, Saint Photios again suffered throughfalse denunciations, being accused of speaking against the emperor. Again deposedfrom his cathedra-see in the year 886, the saint finished his days at the Armoneiamonastery in 891.

The Orthodox Church venerates Saint Photios as a zealous defender of theOrthodox East from domination by the pope, and as a theologian, leaving behind himvarious works, exposing the errors of the Latins, refuting various heresies, explicat-ing Holy Scripture, and exploring various topics of the faith.

SPIRITUAL REFLECTION“I will meditate on Your commandments, and contemplate Your ways.” -Ps. 119:15

had already come when the Holy Fire issues forth, but nothing happened. TheArmenians were frightened and began to weep, and ask God that He sends themthe Fire; but the Lord did not hear them.

Already a half hour had passed and more, and still no Holy Fire. Theday was clear and beautiful; the Patriarch sat to the right side. All of a suddenthere was a clap of thunder, and on the left side the middle marble column crackedand out of the fissure a flame of fire came forth. The Patriarch arose and lit hiscandles and all the Orthodox Christians lit theirs from his. Then all rejoiced, andthe Orthodox Arabs from Jordan began to skip and cry out, “Thou art our oneGod, Jesus Christ; one is our True Faith, that of the Orthodox Christians!” Andthey began to run about all of Jerusalem and raise a din, and to shout all over thecity. And to this day they still do this in memory of the incident and they jumpand shout, running around the Holy Sepulcher, and they praise the one true God,Jesus Christ, and bless the Orthodox Faith. Beholding this wonder, the Turkisharmy, which was standing around on guard, was greatly amazed and terrified. From amongst them one named Omar, who was standing at the St. Abraham’sMonastery on guard, immediately believed in Christ and shouted, “One is thetrue God, Jesus Christ; one is the true faith, that of the Orthodox Christians!”And he jumped down to the Christians from a height of more than 35 feet. Hisfeet landed on the solid marble as if though on soft wax.

And to this day one can see his footprints imprinted as though in wax, although the non-Orthodox tried to erase them. I saw them with my own eyesand felt them with my own hands. And the column with the fissure still bears thescorch marks. As for Omar the soldier, having jumped down, he took his weaponand thrust it into the stone as though into soft wax, and began to glorify Christunceasingly. For this, the Turks beheaded him and burned his body; the Greeksgathered up his bones, put them into a case and took them to the Convent of theGreat Panagia, where they gush forth fragrance until this day. The Armenians inthe Holy Sepulcher received nothing and were left only with their shame. ThePasha of Jerusalem and other Turkish authorities were greatly displeased withthem and wanted to slaughter them all, but they feared the Sultan. They onlypunished them heavily: they say that they made each one to eat dung as he leftthe church . . .

The Miracle of the Holy Fire at Sepulcher church in Jerusalem 1547 - Holy Saturday

Let me tell you about this: At the Great Gates themselves, on the left side, stands a column made out of marble with a fissure from which the grace, that is,the Holy Fire, came forth. This column is honored by Orthodox as well as non-Orthodox, and even the Armenians. I would like to write a little about this inci-dent, how the Orthodox Eastern Christians unanimously speak of it and theTurks themselves confirm it. In the wall there is an inscribed marble slab, andthey say that this very incident is written on it; but we could not read it becauseit is written in Syrian letters, in the Arab tongue; and I only heard about it, butdid not read it. But the incident happened something like this: At one time whenthe Greeks were completely oppressed by the Turkish yoke, some rich Arme-nians took it into their heads to force the Greeks out of the Holy Sepulcher andout of the Church of the Resurrection. They gathered a large sum of money andbribed the Ottoman Porte and all the Jerusalem authorities, assuring the unbe-lievers that the Holy Fire comes forth not simply for the sake of the Greeks, butfor all Christians, and “if we Armenians are there, we also will receive it!” Andthe Turks, who are greedy for money, accepted the bribe and therefore did asthe Armenians wished, and they affirmed that only the Armenians would beallowed to receive the Holy Fire. The Armenians rejoiced greatly and wrote toall their lands and to their faithful, that more of them should go on a pilgrimage. And a great multitude of them did come. Holy Saturday approached: the Arme-nians all gathered in the church, and the Turkish army drove the poor Greeksout. Oh, what unspeakable grief and sorrow filled the Greeks! There was onlyone comfort for them — the Grave of the Savior, and they were being keptaway from it, and the Holy Gates were locked to them! The Armenians wereinside the church and the Orthodox was on the streets. The Armenians wererejoicing and the Greeks were weeping. The Armenians were celebrating andthe Greeks were bitterly lamenting!

The Orthodox stood opposite the Holy Gates on the court and aroundthem stood the Turkish army, watching so that there would not be a fight. ThePatriarch himself with all the rest stood there with candles, hoping that theywould at least receive the Fire from the Armenians through the window. But theLord wished to dispose things in a different way, and to manifest His true Faithwith a fiery finger and comfort His true servants, the humble Greeks. The time
