At one time, I lived in Atlanta, Georgia. While I grew up in Minnesota, my time in Atlanta opened my eyes to how one does not have to endure a sub-zero winter! (My brother and sister learned that lesson a lot earlier than I did and moved to California in their college days and have definitely grown roots there.)

As a coping mechanism to living in Wisconsin, I’ve tried, not always successfully, to escape for a long weekend every winter to some place warm. This winter, my husband, Mark, and I were able to escape for a week to the Dominican Republic.

The choice of destination was due to a niece’s “destination” wedding, but I was game since (1) I had never been there, (2) it was warm, and (3) it had an ocean! While there were family activities to participate in, we were able to spend a few days exploring, including a trip off the Hard Rock Resort to go zip lining.

The 40-minute trip to the mountain for zip lining also gave us a chance to glimpse the culture. On the drive in the open-sided van, our guide explained a bit about living in the Dominican Republic. For example, the minimum wage is $200 a month! (That’s less than most people pay to board their horse!)

This is why most Dominicans want to work in the resorts where they can supplement their wages with tips. The homes are small – some are quite charming with their bright colors; others are cinder block, cement or whatever they can find to put together.

Escape to Warmth (And a Small Horse Adventure)

Besides the tourist industry, some make their living farming. They may have beef or dairy cattle and are very proud of their cheese production. Others harvest coffee and cocoa beans.

One sight that struck me was how they tethered their horses. They are tied by a halter or leg in pastures or the side of the road. Cars, trucks, vans and motorcycles whizzed by, but the horses barely swished an ear! (Mine would have been in the next county, and I shudder to think of what would happen if they were tethered by their leg!)

The resort also offered horseback riding on the beach, so my sister-in-law and young nephew took a morning ride in the bush and along the beach. The horses were criollos, smaller in size than I’m use to and very calm. You had the option of staying at the walk or picking up the pace along the beach. Well, no question what I was going to do, so I pressed my mount into the canter. My little mare may have been a dawdler at the walk, but she was fast at the canter! Such fun!

It was fascinating to see another country’s way of life, and the horses I saw were in good condition. Their legs were clean, hooves nicely trimmed, and in good weight. (It will be interesting to hear Dr. Batker’s presentation at the WDCTA Annual Conference in comparison to the horses on the other side of the island in Haiti, where poverty is much higher.) The horses earned their dinner, for sure. In contrast, I think our horses are quite pampered...in their work, living conditions and feeding programs.

See you at the conference and awards banquet in less than weeks!

WDCTA Central Chapter is proud to introduce Taylor Schmidt, daughter of Brian and Cari Schmidt, Wautoma, and youth/junior rider. Here is Taylor’s 2014 Memorable Moment.

In Her Own Words“Miss P and I became partners in March 2013. Over the past year and-a-half, we’ve grown into a team who enjoys learning and having FUN. Miss P is an eight-year-old, off-the-track Thoroughbred who didn’t have much riding experience outside a race track. It took a lot of lessons and clinics, combined with a mixture of practice, patience and work, and a lot more work, to get her ready for the 2014 show season.

“We are still hard at work, and as a youth/junior rider member of Central Chapter, it

gives us lots of opportunities to experience and participate in several events.

“The 2014 Capital Mini Event, hosted by the Southwest Chapter, held at The Horse First Farm in Brooklyn WI, was a blast. The two-day event definitely sparked both Miss P’s and my interest in eventing!

“The facility was absolutely gorgeous and included not only an ample number of permanent and temporary stalls, but also included a covered indoor arena, a large outdoor dressage court, permanent obstacles, fences and recently completed cross country eventing course. The host volunteers warmly welcomed novice, intermediate and advanced riders and horses. The Day 1 clinic was the perfect event to introduce a new horse and new rider to the sport of eventing. Day 2 was dressage, stadium jumping and cross country jumping competition.

“We will definitely participate in the 2015 Capital Mini Event and other clinics and schooling shows WDCTA offers.”

Central Chapter recognizes and applauds our member’s horse-manship activities and asked members to share clinics attended, shows competed in or judged, goals accomplished or still being worked on, a new horse.... anything members did with their horse or with other’s horses in 2014. We all learn from each other and

Her photos and video are bound to touch emotions.

Shelly Reichart provides a personal account about accomplishing goals, no matter the circumstances. From training a failed Western pleasure Quarter Horse to Grand Prix to coming back from not just one, but two, devastating knee injuries, Shelly exemplifies the importance of determination and harmony with your body and your horse, no matter what hurdles are thrown in your way. Shelly owns a training and boarding facility, Paradigm Farm, in Lake Mills, WI.

SILENT AUCTION DONATION FORM

The Wisconsin Dressage & Combined Training Association (WDCTA) is a non-profit organization run by dedicated volunteers. Through their efforts, our organization offers many services to eventing and dressage enthusiasts throughout the Wisconsin area. The WDCTA is a charter member of the United States Dressage Federation (USDF).

WHAT IS DRESSAGE?Its fundamental purpose is to develop, through standardized progressive training methods, a horse's natural athletic ability and willingness to perform, thereby maximizing its potential as a riding horse. At the peak of a dressage horse's gymnastic development, the horse will respond smoothly to a skilled rider’s minimal aid. Dressage is occasionally referred to as "Horse Ballet."****The proceeds from our auction will be used to support future educational programs...for example, USDF Instructor's Certification Program, L-Judges Program, JR/YR education, and general membership clinics and programs.
