Equipment Evaluation and

Performance Audit

In today’s hectic manufacturing environment, detailed evaluation of mechanical and electrical issues that affect equipment reliability or prod-uct quality often goes undone. Many factors such as:

• Resource constraints • Production schedules • Technical capabilities • Missing required diagnostic tools

Limit the equipment user, resulting in quick fixes and temporary patches that do not address the root cause of the problem.

Circonix Technologies offers a wide range of engineering and design services for paper, film and foil manufacturing and processing facilities. Among these services is the Circonix Technologies Equipment Evaluation and Performance Audit (EEPA).

The EEPA has been designed to look at the critical areas affecting machine effectiveness and help the user determine the best course of action to enhance the performance of the production equipment. The process is collaborative in nature, engaging the customer’s internal resources in the problem solving process used to evaluate the production equipment. The result is a comprehensive report detailing the necessary course of action for machine performance enhancement.

Audit ProcessThe process has been designed to maximize the results of the performance audit. There are 4 fundamental stages in the process that are inputs into the final report. The primary elements of the EEPA include:

InterviewsCirconix Technologies electrical and mechanical converting experts will interview production, maintenance, engineering, R&D and management personnel to ascertain a comprehensive overview of the existing machine issues. This interview can take place prior to the on site visit or as the kickoff to the formal evaluation. The interview is the basis of the course of action being employed for the formal audit. Circonix Technologies highly recommends a conference call and information exchange prior to the au-dit as to better define the testing protocol before hand.

Data CaptureDuring the EEPA process, critical parameters are measured, verified and tracked. Some typical audit activities include but are not limited to:

• Drive performance evaluation (Tension, Speed, Current)• Communication wiring and cable integrity checks• Equipment and hardware audit and cataloging• Control hierarchy audit • Sectional speed match verification• Acceleration and deceleration data capture• Outer Loop (Tension) measurements on affected line sections• Evaluation of the mechanical systems to ensure equipment integrity

Process ReviewTypically a Circonix Technologies web-handling and controls expert will evaluate the overall web handling performance of the equipment based on information provided by the customer from historical trending, operator logs, down time logs, personnel interviews and quality data.

EvaluationThe evaluation phase occurs both on and off site. As data is compiled on a 24-hour basis, it is captured using high-speed storage equipment and is evaluated on site on a daily basis to capture any trends or anomalies that can be attributed to the specific issues being addressed. Additionally, this same information is correlated off site during the final report generation.
