SEDIMENTATION STUDIES
APPARATUSMODEL: TR 01
The unit consists of five equally sized glass cylinders
mounted on a vertical back-panel with illumination from
behind. Measuring scale is provided for each cylinder
to measure the suspension height. Each cylinder may
be removed from the board for filling and mixing of
the solid particles as well as for cleaning.
THIS Sedimentation Studies Apparatus (Model: TR 01) is a bench-top unit designed to allow students
to study the different characteristics of sedimentation. Students shall be able to determine not only the
effects of initial concentration and initial suspension height on sedimentation rates but also the effect of
particle size distribution and the using of flocculating agents. Student shall also be able to construct the settling
rates curves from a single batch experiment.
EXPERIMENT CAPABILITIES
♦ Effects of initial concentration and initial suspension
height on sedimentation rates
♦ Effect of particle size distribution
♦ Effect of flocculating agent
♦ Construction of settling rate curves from a single
batch test

DESCRIPTION
Sedimentation is a process used widely in the
clarification of water and wastewater. The process is
described as follows: At the beginning of a batch
sedimentation process, the solid is uniformly
distributed in the liquid with a total suspension depth
of Z0. After a short while, the solids have settled to
give a zone of clear liquid, zone A and a zone D of
settled solids. Above zone D is a thin transition layer,
zone C, in which the solids content varies from that in
the original pulp to that in zone D. Above zone C is
zone B where the concentration is uniform and equal
to the original concentration. The boundaries between
zones D and C and between C and B are not clear, but
the boundary between zones A and B is usually sharp.
The depth of zones D and A increase as settling
continues. The depth of zone C remains nearly constant,
and that of zone B decreases. Eventually zone B
disappears and solids are all in zones C and D. Finally,
the sedimentation process stop when there are only
two distinct zones, A and D.
The settling rate can be shown on a plot of interface
height (between zone A and B) vs. time. In the
beginning, the settling rate is almost constant. When
zone B disappears, the settling rate decreases and
steadily drops until the ultimate height is reached. In
some cases the interface height keep decreasing for
long hours, and the ultimate height can only be
estimated.
Information from batch tests for such systems forms a
vital part of the optimum design and operation of
industrial sedimentation tanks.
