Application:The VD 3 is a low cost handtool for refacing valve seats.The VD 3 refaces even hardseats and especially toughseat materials like Nimonicwhich, when machined bygrinding, tend to load thegrinding wheel rather fast.Roundness, concentricity andsurface finish of the refacedvalve seat are within manu-facturers’ specifications.

Working principle:The VD 3 machines the valve seat ina lathe-type facing operation.A pilot is locked in the valve guideto align the VD 3 in centerline withthe valve guide.The VD 3 is placed on top of thepilot. With the single point carbide cutterpositioned in front of the inside edgeof the valve seat, the proper depth ofcut is set.The depth of cut is set by a micro-meter mechanism to maintain positi-ve control over the stock to be remo-ved from the valve seat.When the VD 3 is then rotated onthe pilot, the cutter travels in a circlearound the valve seat with con-tinuous outward transverse feedmotion under the proper seat angle.As a result, the seat is refaced toconcentricity with the valve guideunder the correct seat angle

First, insert the pilot in thevalve guide. Then, lower themachine over the pilot andposition the grinding wheel infront of the inner edge of thevalve seat. Set the desired depth of cut.

Grinding is automatic!

Turning the control knobs isenough to start both the circu-lar motion and the transversemotion of the grinding wheel.

Working Principle:The machine is aligned in centerlinewith the valve guide by a pilot whichis locked in the valve guide.Prior to starting the automatic grin-ding operation, the depth of cut is setwith the grinding wheel in front ofthe inside edge of the valve seat. The seat is then refaced to the presetdepht by the simultaneous applica-tion of a circular feed motion and atransverse feed motion to the grin-ding wheel. While the grinding wheel itself isrevolving with the grinding spindleat high speed, the spindle and thewheel are also travelling slowly aro-und the valve seat in a circle withsimultaneous transverse feed motionacross the valve seat. As a result, the valve seat is refacedto concentricity with the valve guideunder the correct seat angle.

The electrical controls are housed ina separate control unit to reduce theweight of the machine for ease ofhandling.

Workhead and Steadies:The universal VKM 5 model fea-tures two selfcentering steadies toalign and clamp all valves from 40to 90 mm in stem diameter.The workhead of the universalmodel is fitted with a driver platefor rotating the valve.The standard VKM 5 model is tai-lored to a particular engine to beserviced and includes only onesteady and a collet chuck in theworkhead to grip the valve of theparticular engine to be serviced.The workhead and the steadies canbe individually located along theslideway on top of the machinebase to clamp each valve on thatpart of the valve stem which nor-mally travels in the valve guide.

Application:The SG 175 support grinder isdesigned for grinding the coni-cal seating surface of valves ofmedium speed diesel engineson a standard lathe.

Handling:The support grinder is clamped in the toolpost located on the top slideof the lathe.

The grinding angle corresponding tothe required valve seat angle is adju-sted by turning the top slide of thelathe to an angular position which corresponds to the valve seatangle and which is defined by thetemplate supplied with the grinder.

The valve stem is clamped in thechuck of the lathe and the valve faceis ground by feeding the grindingwheel into the rotating valve face.

Counterboring machinefor installing oversize valve seat inserts

Working Principle:The ADM 4E is aligned in centerlinewith the valve guide by means of apilot inserted into the valve guide. The counterbore is machined in alathe-type turning action to thepreset diameter by the simul-taneous application of both a cir-cular and an axial feed motion tothe single point cutter.While the cutter rotates aroundthe counterbore, a feed gearmecha-nism ensures a continuousaxial feed motion which is defi-ned by a slideway in the toolhead.
