e all love simple things. We love them because we loathe going
through a frustrating experience of discovering how something does
what its supposed to do.
Although we share affection for simple things we rarely realize how hard
it is to create something that is perceived as simple.
A while ago an Italian genius, called Leonardo, said: Simplicity is the ulti-
mate sophistication. He obviously understood that anyone can make
something look hard but only a few can get it to look simple.
Examples are found everywhere from tangible (science & technology)
to the intangible (spirituality & philosophy). In science one of the smal-
lest formulas out there provides us answers to the hardest questions
(E = mc 2). In technology a portable music player with one button ignited
a new era. In spirituality Zen is just a perfect example. Simple things
make sense and attract.
Im a webdeveloper and with my team we strive to create simple things.
This pursuit is denitely demanding. Most of the problems we solve are
pretty sophisticated in terms of technology and programming. But no
matter how sophisticated the thing is youre doing; you have to make
sure that your creation is simple enough for almost anyone to under-
stand. Once the majority of people dont realize how much effort was
put into it:youve done a great job!
The academic world in specic seems to have more appreciation for so-
phistication than simplicity. Simplicityhere is too often mistaken for
simplemindedness. Instead it is the opposite; simple things come from
willing, passionate and intelligent beings. I know youre one of those. So
please Do us all a favor and create simple things because thats the
most challenging thing you can do!
Peace,
Richard Straver

Simplicity
As free agents we work on innovation in the public domain. We work on a smaller and better
public service, want to create awareness on the New World of Work and also improve digital
skills of the civil servants. The central ambition of Digital Action is that the entire public ser-
vice will start working in accordance with the principles of the New Way of Working.

Digital Action
s ree agents we work on innovation in the public domain. We
work on a smaller and better public service, want to create awareness on
the New World o Work and also improve digital skills o the civil ser-
vants. The central ambition o Digital Action is that the entire public ser-
vice will start working in accordance with the principles o the New Way
o Working.
The New Way o Working is a vision o making work more eective and
efcient, but also more pleasant or the organisation as well as the em-
ployee. Social trends (such as the digital revolution) make a shit toward
the New Way o Working necessary and urgent. Not schemes and sys-
tems, but people and their possibilities should be at the centre o the go-
vernments thinking. The civil servants o the uture should adapt their
method o working to ace the rapid changes in society. But how to do it?
By placing the employee centre stage and giving him the leeway and
reedom, within certain limitations,in how he works, where he works,
when he works, what tools he works with and with whom he works.
We love what we do
Due to the rise o the interactive Internet (web 2.0) over the last ew
years, distances are ever easier to bridge, inormation and knowledge is
spread more widely and aster, and new ways o (cooperative) working
are possible,or example by using Wikis,orums,social networks,crowd
sourcing, supply and demand acilities and other 2.0 tools. The digital
changes have a high impact on how people, groups and organisations
establish connections to one another. Boundaries between what are in-
side and outside, who belongs to a group and who doesnt, what is work
and what is private. These developments lead to signifcant changes in
society and politics.
The gul between government and civilians can be closed through moretransparency, more eedback, better inormation. I we start using all the
available expertise, ideas and creative talent, within and outside our or-
ganizations,we can accomplish the undamental changes our society
needs. Cooperation over all kinds o borders becomes possible, creating
solutions rom practice with teachers, scientists,ar tists, local residents.
Use o human capital will be improved, making the civil service as a who-
le better able to anticipate uture issues.
Part o the change process is to pay specifc attention to the (improve-
ment o) the ICT skills o ofcials. One advantage is that uture employ-
ees will have been spoon-ed on these digital skills. Through our Digital
Academy the civil servants have every opportunity to develop their skills
and proessionalism by global collaborative classrooms, webinars and
apps and learn how to work with and beneft rom co-creation.
