Collaborative Mobile Geo-referenced Services
Some ideas for project proposals
Dimitri Konstantas
http://asg.unige.ch
2
The user as mobile content provider
Rationale :
• Low cost, High power, high memory mobile devices
• Ubiquitous access to high bandwidth mobile networks
• Mobile Users become content providers
3
Geo-references services in 2010s
Power to the user!!!
• User created mobile and geo-spatial content
• Integration of mobile and “fixed” information sources
• Collaborative services
4
On-going work at ASGBasic concepts
• E2E QoS information provision for wireless networks– Collaborative, User measured QoS of wireless networks– Based on virtual tags– Allowing prediction of QoS
• Hovering Information– Active information linked to a geographical location– Hovering autonomously from one mobile device to another in
a quest to stay alive and within its anchored location
5
On-going work at ASGServices
• Virtual tags services– FoxyTag : fixed trafic radat information
• trust based service (free service available from the internet)
– The Bol d’Or (nautical contest in Lake Geneva) safety boats localisation and management system
• E2E QoS-forecast service for wireless networks– A pilot service developed and tested on GPRS and UMTS– Results will be available in a PhD thesis to be defended in
mid spring 2009 (Katarzyna Wac)
• Hovering Information prototype (late 2009)
6
Project Proposals in preparation:QoS service
A fine grain wireless networks’ QoS information broker
• Collaborative service, Trial driven
• Objectives– 1.1.b : the Network of the Future (call 5) – 8.5 FET Proactive ; Self Awareness in Autonomic
Systems (call 5)
7
Project Proposals in preparation:Mobile Information management
Based on the Hovering Information concept
A service managing mobile user information• A Framework integrating the management of
information coming from Mobile information sources, sensor networks, fixed access points
• Objective 1.3.a Internet of Things Architecture and Technologies for the Internet of Things (Call 5 or FET open)
9
Hovering information:An overlay for mobile content

(pa1,t1)
(pa4,t4) (pa3,t3)
In the absence of fixed infrastructure, hovering information will use all devices in its neighbourhood such as phones, RFIDS, sensors, PDAs, laptops, PCs, etc
Hovering information (blue) will be linked to a location and optionally time stamped (pa0,ta). Physically, this information will reside in neighbouring devices (pink)
Hovering information (blue) will be capable of moving from one location to another (from pa0 to pa4) jumping across the intermediate physical devices (pink)

Hovering Information features
• Linked to a geographical location - Hovering autonomously from one mobile device to another
• Moving from a geographical location to another• Existence of its own once created• Existence in a dynamic distributed heterogonous
environment with no centralized servers• Based on P2P, MANET …. research results
11
Service example :geo-referenced infrastructure
information services
Wireless Infrastructure status is today provided and controlled by the operators
Example : coverage, QoS etc.
This is not enough for demanding applications as it is very coarse grained information
12
Fine grain QoS of Wireless networks
Games, m-health and other context and data delivery critical applications need high precision information on QoS
• Signal strength based measurement is not precise enough
• Antenna based QoS is not sufficiently accurate
13
An E2E QoS-forecast service
• Collaborative, User measured
• Based on virtual tags
• Allowing prediction of QoS

Towards QoS-and context-aware mobile applications
Goal: to know and adapt to the forecasted E2E QoS
E2E QoS forecast
service
log / request E2E QoS info
Problem: no guarantees + no knowledge on E2E QoS
15
Development of E2E QoS-forecast service
• Reporting of observed QoS as a virtual tag• Multidimensional: time, space, network …• Trust and prediction
