We follow Mary, expectingher to stop at an apart-ment complex where wecan sit and discuss her
welfare work. Minutes pass. Flatsand bungalows disappear. Sheleads us to a narrow, dingy lane
where theres a row of ramshack-le houses. We climb the stairs andare greeted by a home thats barein every sense of the word- nofurniture, electronic appliancesor even a dining table. The wallsare plastered with pictures of Je-sus Christ and theres an old-stylestove that she points to when shesays our house caught fire be-cause of that thing.
I dont want publicity. Just re-fer to me as Mary, she says. Shecares for over thirty animals, some of whom are severely han-dicapped or recovering frombirth control surgery. My chil-dren, she calls affectionately as
fifteen cats climb on her shoulderand lap. One that was severelyabused before she rescued it lostthe use of both hind legs and lostcontrol of its bladder. She breaksdown as she holds up the cat forus to see. It wears a diaper and
snuggles up to her as she tells it topose for a photograph. She tearfully recounts the day
she was neck deep in water whenthe tsunami struck. My cats
warned us by coming to us andscreaming, but we didnt under-stand what they were trying tocommunicate. My husband and I
were stranded, starving and terri-fied. A black cat kept mewing atus from outside and watchedover us until the water receded. He came to live with us after that.Ive always believed that Karuppa
was our saviour.Mary has no help and perso-
nally sweeps, cleans, cares for thecats, cooks and tries to earn a liv-ing by taking tuitions for childrenof low-income households. So-
meday, this house will bdown on my head, she glancing at the dilapidated ing. I dont mind if a brick on me but not on my childr

Athatched roof, with an array of dis-
hes burning slowly on earthen pots;dupattas (as curtains) with rangolidesigns done in white paint, adding
dashes of colour and walls lined with cine-ma posters of Tollywood stars. I dont knowif a traditional Andhra household can rec-reate the same atmosphere, but the restau-rant at The Checkers does look pretty.
To add to all this is the Telugu numbersfrom the 60s and 70s promising to treatyou with the Andhra spread.
This food festival promise to be a tripdown memory lane for all those Andhraitessettled in Namma Chennai or those craving
for some forgotten dishes from the state.
Rural repast
I start off with the piping hot pesarattu, which is slightly coarse in its texture; true toits taste. This is served with alum (ginger)chutney.
The vegetarian and non-vegetarian dis-hes are clearly demarcated and there isplenty to choose from. Bangala dumpavenkkai korra (potato and brinjal fry), che-madumpa pulusu and pappu chinthakoora(dal cooked in tamarind juice), all cookedin the traditional style oily, spicy, sour are a great way to start the main course.
Mamidikkai pacchi royalu (prawnscooked in raw mango) is one of the favou-rite non-veg pick of Chef Faninder Adabala,
which you must try. Kodi pulao (chicken
biryani) finely cooked in Basmati rice goes
well with every dish.
Sweets unlimited!Even if you dont have a sweet tooth but
are a hardcore Andhrite, we promise thedesserts are a real treat. As Chef Faninder,an Andhraite settled in Chennai, says thatone of the highlights of the food festival arethe array of traditional sweets he has pre-pared and brought for the occasion. Thesedays every village has a bakery and old fa-vourites like poo chutalu, sunnunda andchilakalu have almost been forgotten, hesays.
Chilakalu, especially, were sent in hugebindis(pots) when the daughter-in-law wasgoing to her in-laws place. We request youto resist your temptation for all those pas-tries and modern sweets, which are also
part of the dessert spread, and try swlike arisalu, sunnunda and poothreka
you rarely get to taste them. In all the Ahra food festival promises to be a peIndependence Day treat. Someone ome one!

Last year, too, we had recruited al-most the same number, he said.

Taking pride in the fact that Sathas seen the lowest attrition rate inlast nine quarters, Krishnan said th

You might giggle at the outlandish ac-cent of Chef Francisco Miguel; his ca-dence has the scrumptious taste ofItaly.
Walk into Rhapsody at the Courtyard inMarriott Hotel, Francisco is wait-ing there to give you an au-
thentic and uniqueItalian experience.
Rustic notesHis mother
taught him cook-ing. Even the me-nu echoes therustic elements oftheir country andthe Lambretta onthe cover will slowlycarry you to the landof olives and wine.
We want the food festto be like taking a journeythrough Italy and people must en-joy something that is skilfully made yet issimple and fresh in nature, Francisco
says.Olive oil and cheese are the main in-gredients. Italian cooking is known for itshealthy balance, the excellent basic ingre-dients being simply cooked, retainingtheir original goodness and freshness.
Though simple, the dishes are rich withvaried flavours and inventiveness in prep-aration that even the most demanding
gourmet is delighted.
Italy on a platterFrancisco and his team will
serve everything from delectableocean-tinged Tuna Carpaccioand Tuscan style lamb rack tothe Venetian Risotto and Mas-
carponata Pizza at thefood fare.
For a deep Italianfeel, taste the Fritto
Misto which is per-fect for any sea foodlover. Squid, shrimpsand fish are marinat-ed and pan fried andserved with a leafycold salad.
If you are a lover ofpizza then try the
chicken salami served with herbs and a crisp
base. Vegetarians are leftwith lesser choices, but solid
ones. Example the pasta stuffed with cheese and served on pumpkin
sauce. For a sweet ending to the meal, taste Franciscos chocolate and vanilla ice
cream truffle with amarena cherries calledTartufo.
Not so spicyUnlike Indians, Italians do not use much
of spices.Biriyani is my favourite Indian dish. Its
so complex and the spices just blend like asymphony, the Chef sums up.

Rahul Baliga is an engineer-ing student. He aspires tobecome an engineer andsettle down in a well rec-
ognised company. So, whatelse? This dashing 21-year-oldis also 2008s National RowingChampion.
Rowing has always been asport that was limited to theIndian Army and not manycivilians have taken it up se-
riously. For twenty years, thenational championship forrowing has been held by the
army, and 2008 has only beenthe second time they
were defeated. Thefirst ever time was
back in 1988, whenfor the first time
the army had to handover its glory to JamesJoseph, who is nowRahuls coach.
I was actually se-lected for the 2006
Asian Games nationaltraining camp but
did not make it tothe final squad.
This threw me offcourse and I took abreak from rowing for afew months.
Then I decided to try evenharder and trained night and
day and won the NationalChampionship. For years it
has always been the armythat has ruled the sport. And to think I am thesecond person to beat
them at a nationalchampionship and the
first ever person whobeat them is my coach isamazing, says Rahul, flashing a smile.
When asked about his entry into therowing scene, the 6 3 tall youngsterexplains My very first passion was bas-ketball. But since I didnt have a coach,I had to let go of the sport. My dad had amembership in the Madras Boat Cluband I used to go there to use the gym. Idecided to try out sculling once and im-mediately fell in love with it.
Talking about how he met his coachbrought a smile to his face. I never hada coach for basketball. I learnt all that Idid from local matches that happenedat the T.Nagar ground and NBA, both
instances where I was just an observer. But when I started rowing, I heard thatan Asian silver medalist was coachingpeople at the boat club. I felt I would be
in good hands and wanted togive it a shot. And hes
been with me sincethen.
He talks about hisregular workoutregime and his dietI row for about20-24 kms every-day from 5:30 a.m.I also row in theevening for a cou-
ple of hours. Mydiet pretty much
consists of healthy
food like dhal or sukkachapathi and not much ofjunk food. I am at my fittest now
and training at a higher level. But when Rahul is asked about his
future plans, he is uncertain. I havefinished my engineering and lookingfor a company that would sponsor mysport also.
I cannot take up rowing as a full-timecareer otherwise. There are no sponsorsand the money is too less.
On the lighter side, when Rahul isasked about the cold he had caught thatprevented him from practice thatmorning, he laughs You should knowthat it takes way more than a cold tostop me.

judging the shuttle. In the third game, Iwas dog tired, Saina lamented at theend of her quarterfinal loss to Indone-
sian giant-killer Maria Kristin Yulianti.Nehwal, 18, was looking to become the first
Indian woman to reach the Olympic semifinal in
badminton when she won a cliffhanger firstgame but frittered away an eight-point lead inthe decider to go down against Indonesias un-seeded surprise package Maria Kristin Yulianti28-26, 14-21, 21-15.
The first game saw an intense battle betweenSaina and Maria, who came to the Olympicswith the tag of a giant killer having beatendefending champion Zhang Ning of China inIndonesian Open earlier this year, with the In-donesian surging ahead before Saina won sev-en points on the trot to snatch regain the leadback and eventually the game.
The toil, however, took a toll on Sainas verveand the Indian looked slightly jaded in the sec-ond game, allowing Maria to claw her way backinto the game and score seven points in a rowto take a lead, which the Indonesian never lost.
Asked what went wrong in the third game,
Saina said, I could not read the drift once Ichanged sides. On many occasions, I expectedher shuttle to land outside and left it only to seeit land inside. I just could not read that.
Asked if the eight-point lead in the decidermade her complacent, Saina said, Not at all. Infact I was not thinking about winning at all. Iwas just playing my game. Even at matchpoints you cannot take it for granted.
Im both happy and sad to have come thisfar and still lose a match despite dominating it.It was my match and I should have won it, shesaid.
Her opponent too felt Saina probably ex-hausted herself in the first two games andhence could not maintain the tempo.
She was attacking all the time. So I had to bepatient. Towards the end, it looked l ike she wasrushing her shots, the Indonesian said.
18-year-old Saina Nehwal
Mums juggle dutiesTrying to be a mother and a champion Olympian simultaneously is a tough task, but theBeijing Games has its fair share of mums juggling their duties. Some of the better-known include British marathon runner Paula Radcliffe, American tennisstar Lindsay Davenport, and Japans seven-time world judo champion Ryoko Tani. But there are plenty more changing nappies one minute and training the next.

Their impeccable on-court camaraderie betrayedno signs of a stormy past as Leander Paes andMahesh Bhupathi on Wednesday inched closerto their first joint Olympic medal by reaching
the quarterfinals of the mens doubles event.
The seventh seeded Indians played compact ten-nis to defeat Marcelo Melo and Andre Sa of Brazil6-4, 6-2 in just over an hour.
In the quarterfinals, they will take on the winnersof the second round match that pits fourth seededSwiss pair of Roger Federer and Stanislas Wawrinkaagainst the mercurial Russian duo of Dmitry Tursu-nov and Mikhail Youzhny.
Paes and Bhupathi were in perfect sync and theycombined well to negate the Brazilians. Breaking Saearly in the third game put them ahead and the duosubsequently did not relax their grip over the pro-ceedings as they sealed the first set without muchado. At a time when games tend to go with the serve, squandering break points is a luxury that a pair canhardly afford and Paes and Bhupathi put themselvesright in the drivers seat by breaking Melo in the firstgame of the second set.

If you havent planned anything this weekend, there are
more than a couple of movies waiting to entertain you onthe big screen.
Starting with Satyam, the Tamil film starring Vishal andNayantara opens today across movie halls. Vishal plays thesupercop in the film produced by brother Vikram Krishna.
Some bad news for all those who wanted to see Vishaland Nayantara sizzle in that steamy number. Among thecuts given by the censors, we hear that Chellame, Chel-lame has been trimmed.
Bollywood namasteAfter Love Story 2050, Priyanka Chopra is hoping to
see Lady Luck smile on her, at least with God TussiGreat Ho.
The film also stars Salman Khan, who comes aftera long hiatus. It also stars Amitabh Bachchan and isremake of the Hollywood flick, Bruce Almighty.
Finally, Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukonetranslate their real-life romance on screen with
Bachna Ae Haseeno. Also starring in the film areBipasha Basu and Minissha Lamba (rememberher in Dus Kahaniyaan, Hey Babyy). The film isdirected by Siddharth Anand, who has movieslike Salaam Namasteand Ta Ra Rum Pum tohis credit (never mind they did not do too well at the box office).
Movies awaitedIt is disappointment for all those who
were waiting to catch the Chennai 600028team again in Saroja. Though the movie was initially slated to release on August
15, we hear that it has been postponedby more than a week. Sources tell usthat most movies have been runninghouseful at the multiplexes and thusthe delay. Also awaited eagerly is latedirector Jeevas Dham Dhoom,
which should also release in aweeks time. Happy movie time fornow!

Reservation on TotalFamily IncomeThe caste reservation should betaken to the next stage. That
could be by allocating reservationon the basis of the Total FamilyIncome (The grand total incomeof all the employed members inthe family). This can becalculated as part of censusprocess (ration card or voters list
verification).Student Reservation = Income of Father + Income ofMother + (Income of unmarried brother or sister)The advantage of this will be: easy calculation of tax, fighting caste-based issues and offering scholarships.
