    Aburst of colour, flashes of

scenery and picture post-card moments. Suchitra V.Srinivasan loves nothing

more than a weekend spent watching South Indias birds intheir natural habitat.

Although she uses what shecalls a camera for beginners, aCanon Powershot S3 IS, the pho-tographs on her birdwatchersblog could easily pass off as so-mething out of a published bookon wildlife.

For Suchitra whos a freelancecopy editor by day, her photoblogpicturesofbirds-tropical.blogspot.comis not just a collage of pretty pic-tures. She hopes visitors to her

website will come to appreciatethe joy of watching nature at itspurest, most undisturbed best

and that people will think twiceabout buying caged birds as pets.

The caged bird trade has beenresponsible for endangeringmany species of birds in the wild. The number of birds sufferingdue to this pet trade is huge.

More than a million birds are tak-en from their homes in the wildand sold across the world. It doesnot matter even if they are notendangered.

If this continues, they will be-come endangered soon, shesays, simultaneously sending aphotograph of a rose-ringed pa-rakeet perched on a coconut tree. This one was happily posing forme.

Suchitra, who is also activelyinvolved in Chennais animal

welfare scene, strongly believesthat photography can changepeoples attitudes towards birdsand animals. While she discour-

ages birds being kept as petreasons mentioned above, squite the cheerleader for shadoptions.

    Aresident of Srinagar has

succeeded in growing or-anges in the backyard ofhis house.

Kashmirs climate is not suit-ed for cultivating oranges as thetemperatures in the valley fall tosub-zero levels during winterwith frost being common to

which oranges are sensitive. However, Abdur Rashid Ba-

dyari has succeeded in growingthe lone orange tree in Srinagar.

Badyari has a hobby of plant-ing a variety of plants since hischildhood days. Some yearsago, Badyari bought a fewplants along with an orangeplant from outside the state andplanted it in the backyard of hishouse, knowing very well thatthe valleys climate is not fa-vourable for the growth of anorange tree.

But, astonishingly, his orangetree not only grew but also

bloomed to bear fruit, astonish-ing his friends and neighbours.

Earlier many people, includ-ing my friends, thought of thistree as an artificial one. But

when they came and saw the or-ange tree, they started appre-ciating it. I feel very happy, saysRashid Badyari.

The tree, at present, hasabout 100 oranges hangingfrom its branches, that too inthe winter season, to the bewil-derment of local horticultureexperts.

They maintain that the cli-mate of Kashmir valley is notcongenial for growing oranges.

It is not possible to grow or-anges in Kashmir valley because

ours is a temperate area wherewe can cultivate apples, plums, apricots, cherry and walnut. Wecant grow oranges as the

weather is not like Nagpur, but we can grow something likerough lemon, said M.S. Qasba,Director, Horticulture Depart-ment, Kashmir.

The Kashmir Valley is not acitrus belt. Its summers areusually cool, and the winters ex-perience snow and are freezing.Oranges are sensitive to tem-peratures below four degreescelsius and that is why an or-ange tree that seems to be defy-ing natural laws baffles the localagricultural experts.

    Adominant Roger Federer

set up a Australian Openthird-round clash with Ma-rat Safin Wednesday as top

seed Jelena Jankovic and defend-ing champion Novak Djokovicshowed glimpses of their best

form. The tennis big guns werejoined in the next round by Serbglamour girl Ana Ivanovic andRussian third seed Dinara Safina.

Swiss great Federer, who isseeking a record-equalling 14thGrand Slam title here, let loose

with some instinctive shot-mak-ing as he beat Russian qualifierEvgeny Korolev 6-2, 6-3, 6-1. Imhappy the way it went. He wasalso a good opponent to playagainst and there were a lot ofgood shots, Federer said, beforelooking ahead to the Safin clash. We go way back. Him, of course, being a former number one, same for me, former Grand Slamchampion, its an intriguing

    match-up.

Mouth-watering clashThe Swiss has beaten Safin

nine times but lost out in a classicsemi-final here in 2005, when theRussian claimed the title. Safinbooked his date with destiny bydowning Spains Guillermo Gar-cia-Lopez 7-5, 6-2, 6-2. Im look-ing forward to it, he said of theFederer match. We know eachother pretty well. He knows howto play against me; I know how toplay against him.

The top-seeded Jankovic bat-tled past Belgian Kirsten Flipkens6-4, 7-5 as she upped the ante inher quest for a maiden Grand

Slam. Its good to have someonepush you so you know what youhave to work on when you stepback on the practice court, saidJankovic, who will play Japaneseveteran Ai Sugiyama on Friday.

    Muscle powerDjokovic dismissed Jeremy

Chardy of France 7-5, 6-1, 6-3 inimpressive style and appears tobe hitting form after a slow startto the season and occasionallapses in his opening match hereagainst Italian qualifier AndreaStoppini. I feel very nice andcomfortable on this court, hesaid. The first round was tricky, Ididnt play such great tennis, but

today was another story. Hope-fully it can get better in the nextmatch.

Third seed Safina recoveredfrom a slow start to dominate fel-low Russian Ekaterina Makarova6-7 (3/7), 6-3, 6-0 while fifth seed

Ivanovic overcame early nervesto crush Alberta Brianti of Italy6-3, 6-2. She has lost only oncethis year, to compatriot Elena De-mentieva in the final of the Syd-ney International, and is one ofthe favourites after a break-through 2008. Next up for Safinais Estonian 25th seed Kaia Kane-pi, who ended Austrian PatriciaMayrs hopes by advancing instraight sets.

Ivanovic made the final herelast year where she lost to MariaSharapova, but her late-seasonform in 2008 left plenty to be de-sired. The 21-year-old thoughseems to be getting into hergroove in Melbourne,

where she feels at homewith family and friendsliving here. It helpedher produce a con-vincing display

With Australiacontinuing to experiment with theiropening position, Rixon has urged thenational selectors to push Haddin up theorder and not to waste him at the numberseven slot. Unless the selectors are seeingsomething Im not seeing, Id hate to seeBrad continue to be pushed down theorder. Brad is one of the worlds beststrikers of the ball and the guy most teamsalways want to get out, he said. He

would be perfect during these power playsbecause in a situation like that hes the kindof guy who can score quick runs. Rixon, who was coach of the New Zealand cricket

Modifying the throttle bodycan inject more fuel into yourcar engine and, hence, producemore power

Air, spark and fuel together react toburst and generate energy. It isimportant that airflow is regulat-ed and controlled with precision

and this is achieved with the help of thethrottle body.

The throttle body sits between the airfilter and the intake manifold, regulat-ing air in response to the accelerator. The throttle plate inside the throttlebody is called the butterfly valve andthis controls the airflow.

We can modify the throttle body, too,for that extra increase in performance.Roadster does not let go unnoticed anypart that is instrumental in extractingraw power from your engine. What is it

with a throttle body enlargement, youmight ask. This is a process in which thediameter of the TB (throttle body) is in-creased by shaving it by 40mm or

50mm based on the type of car. Doingthis modification will increase the air-flow into the engine and the air masssensor will detect the extra air intakeand communicate with the ECU to in-

ject more fuel. Hence, extra power isgenerated. Injection of more fuel thanstock configuration allows translates tobad fuel efficiency, a sacrifice that weneed to make for that extra torque.

There are bolt-on kits for hassle-freeupgrade and you dont have to break

your head on making a right modifica-tion on the stock throttle body.

It is best if the car is installed with afree-flow exhaust. Its even better if theengine is ported and polished tosqueeze that extra juice out of a TB en-largement mod.
