Im just an average Tamilguy, born and bred inChennai, says Satish Ba-bu, Managing Director,

    UniverCell. But most average

guys dont aspire to turnover Rs.1000 crore for the fi-nancial year.

When Babu establishedUniverCell in the spare roomof his fathers office in 1997,he was battling the grey mar-ket that sold cell-phones whileoffering little service and nowarranty. Prior to UniverCell,

Babu had spent 10 years ma-naging sales of water purifiersand this experience taught himtwo important lessons turning ano into a yes and retainingyour workforce both of whichcame handy in the creation of aretail giant.

Filling spacesTowards the turn of this centu-ry, Babu sensed a vacuum in cell-phone retailing in the Indianmarket. I personally like to havea choice while making a purchaseand that choice just wasnt avail-able for mobiles. I wasnt the onlyone, there were several more likeme, he says. When he beganUniverCell, he targeted thosewith cars for only they could af-ford to pay an incoming tariff ofRs. 17 per minute on a post-paidconnection. In stark contrast, these were also the times whenan SMS was free, simply becausenobody was sending one. Sensinganother opportunity, Babu set

about popularising it amongstcustomers. In 2000, the govern-ment helped a fair deal by lower-ing taxes (from 21 per cent to anear zero) and reducing tariffsconsiderably. The cell-phone,slowly but surely, became an in-dispensable part of life, across allstratas.

Babu and UniverCell have alsocome a long way from five em-ployees to over 1,300 and fromone showroom on T.T.K. Road to155 showrooms across the South-ern peninsular. His ascent has al-

so meant that he now has to fendoff national and perhaps interna-tional competition but this hasntchanged his ethos. I have alwaysbelieved that if you provide thebest service to people, they willcome back to you. Notone

for just talk,Babu ensures that his staff un-

dergoes rigorous training at dif-ferent stages to be betterequipped to handle customers.UniverCells customer relation-ship management software alsodoes its bit to help in up-sellingand roping in repeat customers.

Print to primetimeMuch is spoken of UniverCells

aggressive promotions. The com-munication first began withprint, with Classified Mart Adsthat spanned 10 words. A far cryfrom occupying primetime ontelevision. In 2007, UniverCellsigned up Madhavan, the actor,to be its brand ambassador. Wedidnt narrow down on a star andthen attach characteristics, we

wanted someone friendly and ap-proachable and he fit the bill, says Babu. A golden move, givenMadhavans association with Air-tel that will only help UniverCell

when it looks beyond the South.

And that isnt speaking of thedistant future. Well be in anoth-er region by the next quarter, says Babu while adding that the1000 showroom mark will beachieved by 2010. UniverCell isalso taking the cell-phone to ruralIndia. Were in the test phase fora colour mobile manufactured byMotorola that will be priced at Rs.999. The launch will followshortly. Music, e-mail and gam-ing are amongst the other sellingfactors that UniverCell is bankingon for the times to come.

Its the service that sets us apart, says Satish BabuDIVYA M. [email protected]

The single carriageway section ofroad between Macclesfield and Buxton has seen 43 fatalor serious accidents since 2001, most of them bikers, according to the Road Safety Foundation. The accidentshave continued despite Cheshire County Councilsattempts to improve safety by bringing in new crashbarriers. More than 400,000 peoplein England have given upsmoking as a result of theban on lighting up in

public places introduced in July, according to a study publishedon Monday.

Researchers say 40,000 deathswill be prevented over the next

decade as a result of the ban.The Smoking Toolkit Study in-

volved interviews with more than32,000 smokers and ex-smokers

over the nine months before theban and the nine months after-wards.

Smoking was made an offencein all enclosed public spaces inEngland, including pubs and res-taurants, on July 1, 2007, forcingsmokers to take their cigarettesoutside.

In the nine months precedingthe ban, there was a 1.6 per centfall in the prevalence of smokingin England, but in the ninemonths after its implementation, the fall was 5.5 per cent whichresearchers said equates to400,000 people.

Despite some opposition to thetough legislation, compliance has

been almost total. Another study to be published

this week, by the Department ofHealth, will show that a total of

234,060 people have stoppedsmoking with the help of a specialservice offered by the NationalHealth Service since the ban camein. Around 22 percent of the adultpopulation still smokes in Britain.

Professor Robert West, CancerResearch UKs director of tobaccostudies, who oversaw the study

with funding from drug compa-nies, said: These figures show thelargest fall in the number of smok-ers on record. The effect has been

as large in all social groups, pooras well as rich smokers. I neverexpected such a dramatic impactand of course there are no guar-antees that smoking rates will notclimb back up again, he said.

But if the Department ofHealth can keep up the momen-tum this has created, there is a re-alistic prospect of achieving atarget of less than 15 percentof the population smok-ing within the next 10

    years.The health charity Ac-

tion on Smoking andHealth (Ash) welcomed thefindings but called for ex-tended action from the govern-

ment to prevent children beingaffected by tobacco companymarketing.

English musician Pete Doherty is all set to write an explosive tell-all book abouthis affair with supermodel Kate Moss.Dohertys book, billed as an intensely personal biography, is expectedto reveal all the secrets of one of the most talked about showbiz relation-ships of recent years.

The book has the 29-year-old singer in talks with major publishersfor a six-figure deal and has hired ex-drug addict Sean Boru to help him

write the book. Boru, who has also written biographies with snookerlegend Alex Higgins and Lotto

    saying.I wrote to Pete when

he was in jail about myexperiences when I was

He knows I understand where he is coming from and this isthe first book that properly details his

Besides writing the tell-all for Doherty,Boru would also like to get a chance tointerview 34-year-old Moss as part of hisresearch.

I am hoping to get the chance to talk to Kate. We have a couple of mutual

Pete sees this as his big chance to say what really happened with Kate and tomake a few quid. He has been ripped off plenty of times, so the book is a great chance

    Have you ever experiencedcreative blocks?

I am not a creative person. I ama very sober guy. I like to remainsilent. But when I get on that mic,its an altogether different me the flow of thoughts, creativity, everything just comes to me withease. When my show is over I amback to normal.

    The freakiest thing you havedone?

This incident was way back inschool. One of the girls in myclass liked me but I didnt like

her. The fact that she liked me was irritating me. On her birth-day, I got hold of the creepiestcreatures, like tadpoles, frogs, mice, etc., and packed themin a neat box and presentedit to her along with a FiveStar chocolate. (Addressingher) If you are reading this, please forgive me. It was justthe age factor that made medo that.

    The best complimentyou have everreceived?

A lot of callers on myshow are frustrated withtheir lives. I solve their

problems and they callme back to say Thanksa lot, Gautham. Yousaved my life. This Iregard as the bestcompliment, for I amable to make a differ-ence in peopleslives.
