Recent Teaching 2020 Fall Semester Ancient Civilizations University of Massachusetts Amherst, Department of Anthropology Ancient Civilizations is an introductory course that combines large lectures and small-group discussion sections. I write and deliver the lectures, develop exams and study materials, choose weekly reading assignments, create discussion section assignments, and work with five Teaching Assistants who supervise on-line discussion sections and grade exams and homework. Course enrollment is 32 Human Ecology University of Massachusetts Amherst, Department of Anthropology Human Ecology is a mid-level lecture course. I write and deliver the lectures, develop exams, writing assignments, and study materials, choose weekly reading assignments, and work with two Teaching Assistant graders. I also reorganized the class from face-to-face to asynchronous remote teaching/learning. Course enrollment is 97 students. 2020 Spring Semester North American Archaeology University of Massachusetts Amherst, Department of Anthropology North American Archaeology is a mid-level gen-ed lecture class. I wrote and delivered the lectures, developed exams and written assignments, and supervised one Teaching Assistant grader. Course enrollment was 98 students. Internships/Independent Study University of Massachusetts Amherst, Department of Anthropology I supervised four undergraduate interns and one graduate student independent study student working with me on several aspects of maintaining, improving, and organizing a large archaeological collection and curation center, including deaccessioning and transferring select collections to more appropriate repositories. 2019 Fall Semester Ancient Civilizations University of Massachusetts Amherst, Department of Anthropology Ancient Civilizations is an introductory course that combines large lectures and small-group discussion sections. I wrote and delivered the lectures, developed exams and study materials, chose weekly reading assignments, created discussion section lesson plans and weekly homework assignments, and worked with five Teaching Assistants who taught the discussion sections and graded exams and homework. Archaeological Survey Methods and Practice University of Massachusetts Amherst, Department of Anthropology Archaeological Survey Methods and Practice is a small, seminar-practicum course in which students are introduced to archaeological field methods, skills, and research design development in a (primarily) classroom setting. I developed and taught the course including lectures, individual and group exercises and assignments, and supervised student term projects. Course enrollment was 16 students

Independent Study: Archaeological Lab Research University of Massachusetts Amherst, Dept. of Anthropology This course title subsumes several independent study courses. Two teams of students prepared exhibit plans for two small museums in Massachusetts. A total of 11 students were enrolled in these and other projects.

Instruction was shared between myself and other UMAS staff, especially the Laboratory Supervisor. A total of 10 students were enrolled in various projects.

2018 Summer Session Summer Field School in Historical Archaeology UMass Archaeological Services and University of Massachusetts Amherst, Department of Anthropology I worked closely with UMAS staff, the Department of Anthropology, The Emily Dickinson Museum, and the UMass Division of Continuing and Professional Education to organize and complete an archaeological field school. Field School enrollment was 7 students who were trained in basic field and laboratory methods under the supervision of three instructors including myself.

Independent Study: Archaeological Lab Research Spring 2018, Spring and Fall 2017, Spring and Fall 2016, Spring and Fall 2015, Spring and Fall 2014, Fall 2010 See general description above. Between 2 and 11 students were enrolled in various projects each semester. In Spring 2018, I worked closely with a group of two students to create an illustrated catalog for a collection of ancient Native American artifacts found in Amherst and Sunderland. Students were trained in artifact identification, analysis, and documentation. In fall 2017, I supervised an undergraduate honors capstone project in which a student directed archaeological investigations at a historic house site in Wayland, MA using UMass students and community volunteers. In spring 2017, I worked closely with a group of three students on an archaeological reconnaissance survey of the site of an 18th-century farmstead in Petersham, Massachusetts. Students were trained in documentary research, mapping, and photography. They mapped and photographed the site and met with local historians. The final product was a report and archaeological site form for the Massachusetts Dept. of Conservation and Recreation (property owner) and the Massachusetts Historical Commission In Spring 2015, I worked closely with two students to analyze and catalog a collection of ancient Native American artifacts that had been donated to the Pocumtuck Valley Memorial Association and then to create two displays for the PVMA museum.

Practicum Fall 2016 University of Massachusetts Amherst, Department of Anthropology I worked closely with a student to prepare text, images, and layout for two interpretive signs for a non-profit environmental action group in Saugus, Massachusetts based on previous research done by UMass Archaeological Services. These were installed in the autumn of 2017.

Introduction to Flintknapping Spring 2016 University of Massachusetts Amherst, Department of Anthropology Introduction to Flintknapping was a one-credit hands-on practicum in which students are instructed in the fundamentals of basic stone tool manufacture. Course enrollment was 6 students.
