Your body normally removes these toxins, however during periods of stress or external toxic overload the body can become overburdened. The pH scale meas- ures the ability to accommodate Hydrogen ions. The lower the number, the more free hydro- gen ions there are and thus the more acidic. When the number is higher the solution is more basic, and has a lower number of Hydrogen ions. The human body is strictly maintained at a pH of 7.35-7.45 and to deviate from that would mean death. -Toxic: from page 1als from bones and cause addi-tional health problems to oc-cur. The dietary changes foundin most detox diets promotethe change from an acid pro-moting diet to one that is morealkaline. This change aids thebody in removing toxins andmetabolic byproducts.

What sort of changes or bene-fits might be expected after thedetoxification program? Indi-vidual results vary significantly. You may experience increasesin energy. quality of sleep. im-proved weight management, ora decrease in blood lipids.

Several studies have been per-formed on detoxification dietsand have shown statistical im-provements in many differentcategories. In a study of 28chiropractic patients that par-ticipated in 21 day detoxifica-tion program reductions inblood lipids. blood pressureand weight were noted.(journal of Chiropractic Medi-cine Powell and Lenoard 2008)Another study performed atLogan College of Chiropracticshowed similar results for thesame sort of detoxificationprogram.

What is included in the Stan-dard Process Purification Pro-gram? "The 21-day purificationprogram is so effective becauseit focuses on the whole per-son-making better food andbeverage choices. taking wholefood supplements. reducingstress. and increasing exercise."The purification program ismore than just a diet. It en-courages patients to adopt ahealthier lifestyle. which. inturn. helps them look and feelbetter.

What is Kinesio TapingIn recent years, there seems tobe many professional athletessporting brightly colored tapeon various parts of their body,in all configurations. Thismethod of using tape to treatalmost any condition seems tobe exploding in popularity. However, does it have uses forthose of us, shall we say, lessathletic regular people? Yes!!Kinesiotape has been used totreat anything from low backpain to carpal tunnel syndrometo digestion upsets in patients

of all ages and sizes.

As stated in the Kinesio TapingAssociation International KT IKinesio taping method book,"Kinesio Tex Tape was firstdeveloped and utilized by Dr.Kenzo Kase,' The tape is acotton and elastic tape that isdesigned to mimic the inherentproperties of human skin. Thetape is applied to an area of thebody in a very specific way, andthen is left on the patient forthree to six days for maximum

therapeutic benefit. Most peo-ple do not notice that the tapeis even there anymore after afew minutes of wearing it, andcan go about their regular ac-tivities (including bathing andswimming). The tape is latexfree, using natural plant dyes tocolor it.

Patients often complain of thechiropractic adjustment "notholding" as long as they wouldlike, especially in the early

-Kinesio Taping: from page 2(Continued from page 2)stages of care or after an acuteinjury to the area. Kinesio tapeis a great way to continuestimulating the proprioceptorsin that particular area betweenadjustments, as this method ofcare can provide effective neu-romuscular retraining andoverall support for the area. There are also many advancedtaping techniques for care of anacute injury, or to stimulatelymphatic's, or for chronicconditions that need additionalsupport. The compressiveforces of the tape also help toreduce inflammation, in somecases.

The tape comes in four colors. The colors do not change thetreatment in any way! How-ever, the pink tape is thoughtto draw energy, so it is mostlyused to "turn on" or facilitate amuscles that needs to bestrengthened. The blue tape ismeant to be cooling, so this isused for acute, inflamed tissuesthat need to be calmed downand relaxed. The black tape iswarming, so this is great forany chronic condition or forathletes using it to enhancetheir performance. Finally thebeige or neutral tape is best forthose people who don't want

to have tape on their bodies inbright colors! The neutralcolored tape is especially greatfor anywhere very noticeableon the body, or for someonewho works in an office with astrict dress code. All fourtypes of tape are identicallymade, with only the color ofdye being a different factor. They are all hypoallergenic aswell.

Kinesiotape has been success-fully used to treat many condi-tions, ranging from shoulderpain to headaches to low back

Sports(um6nued from page I)should be started before juve-nile athletes begin participatingin athletics. Conditioning aloneis a great step for reducing theoverall risk of injuries in youngathletes.

There are also special consid-erations base on the gender ofthe athlete. Female athletes inparticular are at risk for injurydue to a number of issues. One concern for the femaleathlete is that they often beginparticipation in sports activitiesat a later stage of development. This may result in a lower den-sity of connective and suppor-tive tissues. Another concern, especially when it comes toknee injuries in female athletes,is the structure of the hip anglein females vs. males. Femaleathletes have a Significant in-crease in risk for anterior cru-ciate ligament injury ACL whencompared to male athletes.Another significant risk factorin female athletes is the loweremphasis on strength condi-tioning. Female athletes areoften concerned with not

wanting to "bulk up" and oftensacrifice weight training. Re-sistance weight training hasbeen shown to increase thetensile strength of tissue signifi-cantly thereby reducing the riskof injury. Another componentof resistance training is to focuson muscle balancing betweenthe agonist and antagonisticmuscles. Imbalances acrossjoint structures often contrib-ute to injuries particularly atthe knee and hip.

A serious issue for female ath-letes is known as the "femaleathlete triad". It developsmainly due to heavily restricteddietary practices (anorexia) andintense physical activity. Dueto the restriction in caloriesthe female athlete will losenecessary adipose tissue. Thiscan result in menstrual prob-lems and bone density issuesdue to the bodies inability tomaintain adequate estrogenlevels. This is a reason whystress fractures are more com-mon in female athletes, particu-larly those that are involved ingymnastics and dancing. Fe-

male athletes should be edu-cated on the need to properlyfuel their bodies. It is impor-tant to emphasize the need formany small meals that are nu-trient rich with enough caloriesto ensure adequate function oftheir bodies.

Another topic that was cov-ered in the continuing educa-tion seminar was the impor-tance of testing and evaluationof athletes in cases of concus-sion. Thanks largely to theNFL; concussion preventionand protocols for return toactivity have gained a lot ofexposure. All high school ath-letes should have a baselinetest performed before partici-pation in athletic events. Thereare several different variationsof this examination. Most highschools will have the baselinetest on file so that it can becompared with a follow up thatis performed during injury orpost game. Concussions aretreated in a much more thor-ough way now. If there is anychance that a child athlete has
