Ericsson MX-ONE™ Manager Availability 3

Ericsson MX-ONE™ Manager Availability provides fault andperformance management for all MX-ONE™ servers andapplications, i.e. MX-ONE™ Telephony System, MX-ONE™ Messaging as well as the Linux™ andMicrosoft Windows™ servers they run on.

Manager Availability is based on selected BMC PATROL®[3] components and prepared for integration with existingSNMP-capable management frameworks, thereforeproviding the benefit of leveraging customers’ existingskills, processes and management framework investments.

[3] BMC PATROL® has recently been renamed by BMC and is now “BMC

Performance Manager”.

Framework Integration

An SNMP bridge module for integration of themanagement console with an SNMP v1 capablemanagement framework. MX-ONE™ alarms are thenforwarded to the management framework. The SNMPbridge module can be installed on the same server as theconsole application or it could be on another server closerto the management framework, on the same side of afirewall as the management framework to prevent SNMPv1 from bypassing the firewall. If management frameworkintegration is not wanted by the customer, this module isnot used.

MX-ONE™ Manager Availability Functionality

Overview

MX-ONE™ Manager Availability provides fault andperformance monitoring for MX-ONE™ servers andapplications. Filtering and basic correlation is provided toensure that the administrator/operator can focus onimportant alarms and protect customers’ managementframework from overloads. Some of the key featuresincluded are:

• Server Monitoring – Monitors the performance, resourceconsumption and capacity of critical server componentssuch as CPUs, memory, caches, physical and logicaldisks.

• Application Monitoring – Picks up and handles events, monitors status of critical applications.

• VoiP QoS Monitoring –Basic QoS monitoring. There isalso an interface to provide info to an external system formore advanced calculations and presentation

• Performance monitoring – traffic data and vitalparameters

Technical SpecificationsManager Availability is based on BMC PATROL (also calledBMC Performance Manager) with applications developedespecially for the Ericsson MX-ONE™ all-in-onecommunication solution.

Characteristics:

• Web-based management interface: Internet Explorer orNetscape browsers supported

• Communications between managed system andManager Availability utilize SSL

Manager Availability consists of the following components– all prepared for easy installation and integration with theMX-ONE™ system to be managed:

• Web-based management Console software (see figure)running on Windows

• Agent (one per server) software with knowledge modulesto manage detailed aspects of Windows and Linuxservers, Active Directory and MX-ONE™ applicationsindividually. One agent with knowledge module(s) isinstalled on each managed server.

• An SNMP bridge module for integration of themanagement console with an SNMP v1-capablemanagement framework. MX-ONE™ alarms are thenforwarded to the management framework. The SNMPbridge module can be installed on the same server asthe console or it can be on another server closer to themanagement framework, on the same side of a firewallas the management framework to prevent SNMP v1from bypassing the firewall. If management frameworkintegration is not required by the customer, this moduleis not used.

For small systems, the console and the SNMP bridge canbe co-located with communications functionality. Therecommendation is to deploy the console and the SNMPbridge on a separate server, and not on those managed.

Technical RequirementsThe operating systems supported by Manager Availabilityare: Windows Server 2003 and LINUX SLES 10 (SUSELinux Enterprise Server).

The management console runs on Windows Server 2003.

Ericsson MX-ONE™ Manager Device

Ericsson MX-ONE™ Manager Device is designed formanaging the distribution of digital assets (software, firmware, operating systems, patches, etc.) for variousdevices in the MX-ONE™ system. However, Ericsson

MX-ONE Manager is compatible with Linux- and Windows-based servers and various MX-ONE™-related softwareinstalled on these operating systems. Coming releases ofManager Device will also include PC clients.

Ericsson MX-ONE™ Manager Device is based on the HPOpenView Radia platform. Radia technology provides highlevels of adaptability, flexibility and automation. Adaptabilitycomes from embedded intelligence of platform-independent object-oriented technology. Flexibility isprovided by the media-independence of Radia technologythat enables content to be easily revised and customized. And Radia also automates digital asset managementacross virtually any kind of network.

By having Ericsson Manager Device based on HPOpenView Radia, customers can leverage the benefits ofany existing Radia infrastructure they may have. Familiaritywith the HP OpenView product family will also reducetraining/skill expectations on partners/customers.
