Following his death in 1962, rubber factory entrepreneur Henry Dunker left some SEK 58 million for cultural investments in the area of his home town, Helsingborg. Some of those funds were invested in the Dunkers Kulturhus, a meeting place for cultural activities, including spaces for students of music, dance, art, and theatre (Helsingborg¹s School of Music alone features practice and recording rooms for some 3,000 students). One of the largest cultural centers in Scandinavia, the building was to house an international art museum, a town museum, a

concert hall with a panoramic view of the Öresund strait, a smaller Œblack box¹ theater, a restaurant, a café, and a museum shop. Erik Andersson Architects¹ answer to the invited competition was a volume that enveloped the existing building on the site, preserving its brick façade whilst filling its interior with new functions.Communications and ventilation systems are organised in between the structure¹s layers, with Vierendeel girders offering the possibility to construct large open spaces. This wasteplant in Korsta is an optimistic building with an ecological spirit. A building which provides a day-to-day landmark for Korsta and radiates light throughout the seasons. Bright like the snow in Sundsvall and sparkling as the water below. The special character of the interior is its open and light construction, achieving flexibility with the most economical means. A simple glulam structure is clad in a coat of transparent and reflective EFTE pillows, which are sparkling and reflective during the day and transform into a beacon of light in the evening.

Ambassador’s Residence (PRETORIA, SOUTH AFRICA)2001

The location of this invited competition proposal for the Residence of the Swedish Ambassador was Pretoria, South Africa, a place laden with a history of racial strife and violent struggles. The design is based on a vertical separation of functions, with private areas being clearly detached fromtheir public counterparts. The entry level consists of a rather closed wall that provides a safe entry for the ambassador and her guests. On the second level, a public area is built up with particular emphasis on the strong relation between the interior and exterior. The main room has sliding glass

doors to allow the entire room to open up to the garden. The library and the dining room offer views of the surroundings and the estate, while the elevated garden turns the representative area into a safe haven. On the third level we find the private home of the ambassador, consisting of aliving room, bedrooms, terrasses, guest rooms, and an office. Collaboration with Magnus Ståhl.
