Black Ice WRFC v Boulder Babes WRFC - friendly
Black Ice topped the Boulder Babes, 90-7, at Dick's Rugby Sporting Goods Park on Saturday. Ideal weather
conditions and smoothly applied offensive schemes served the Ice well on the day.
Men's D-1 Tourney at Glendale
Seedings are set for the next round of competitions on the road the USA Rugby men's clubside last four to be held in the
Kettle and on the StoveTop the first weekend in June at Glendale's Infinity Park Rugby Complex. The Cauldron fired hotly
with rugby action as numbers 2-thru-4 got ordered in no uncertain terms:
Glendale Raptors, winners over Provo Steelers 79-10, finished in second place on the table and will host Texas
#3 club, Dallas Reds on Saturday, May 4;
Steelers, who took third in the league, will travel to Dallas for a fixture with Texas #2, Dallas Harlequins on the
day;
Kansas City Blues looked smart in topping Denver Highlanders, 48-16, and snagged the last playoff slot at #4
position in the league; Blues look to put the somber in Austin Blacks in the Lone Star capitol on that day;
and yesterday's numero uno, Denver Barbarians, have remained in that enviable spot; as such, they'll host
Texas #4, Austin Huns at home on 5.4

Provo Steelers vs. Denver Barbarians
April 20th 2013
Infinity Park, KO: 4:15 P.M.
for RA: JM
As the curtain-raiser between Glendale and Kansas City painfully concluded, the ennui relented and the men
gathered afield to determine the best in the west. The Denver Barbarians looked to reverse an early-season dismantling
by the Provo Steelers, who hoped to finish their season unblemished by loss. More importantly, at stake was earning
the first seed from the West without having to return the following day to play Glendale with the potential for dropping
to the third seed. The victor would conclude the day with primacy in the West and the gain the inside track in the
national playoffs.
Under a heavy, dark sky, both teams wasted little time establishing their game plan. Provo used strong
individual runners to bang through for territory near to the breakdown, while the Barbos attempted to spin the ball wide
to their speedy playmakers. The Steelers execution forced Denver infractions, and fullback Lualua converted a penalty
kick break into the score sheet 8 minutes into the match.
Tactical kicking by flyhalf Maximo De Achaval led to a Denver 5
meter scrum, and 8-man Tommy Pasque took the ball from the
back of the scrum across the tryline. De Achaval’s conversion
gave the Barbos a 7-3 lead, but Provo answered shortly as lock
Latu Sailosi shrugged off several would be tacklers before
darting 20m for the score. Lualua’s conversion settled the
Steelers into a three point lead 15 minutes into the match.
As both teams were executing their strategies, the
Barbos kicking game gained advantages that forced Provo to kick
for territory rather than run the ball out from behind their own
22m line. Unfortunately for the Steelers, this meant putting the
ball in the hands of Denver fullback Phil White, who returned one errant kick past four defenders down the sideline for a
corner try and a difficult conversion by De Achaval to return the
lead to Denver’s favor, 14-10 midway through the half. After De
Achaval added a drop goal to his tally, a fracas broke out
resulting in yellow cards to Denver prop Josh Masek and Provo
wing Fakatoko Toa. With both teams down a man, the Barbos
were able to find more space and use timely kicks to keep Provo
under pressure for the remainder of the half. Inside Center
Taylor Howden capitalized on a 5m scrum to by dummying
outside and cutting nicely inside for a converted try. Denver
followed that try with a long break by winger Jake Humphrey,
and with ample space and support, they were able to get the
ball to the speedy White for his second score, this time under
the posts for the easy conversion. De Achaval notched a penalty kick to end the half with Denver holding an
insurmountable 34-10 lead.

harlequinsraptorssundayharlequinsraptorssundayharlequinsraptorssundayharlequinsraptorssunday
From the onset of the second half, the Barbarians proved their intention to play a complete game of high quality
rugby and erase the memory of a bitter loss. Center Kyle Hitt broke loose for 35m before White finished off the foray
with another converted try. Unfortunately, Provo sullied what was an otherwise valiant and physically imposing
performance with continuous backchat to the referee and sometimes dirty play that eventually resulted in one sendoff
and another sin bin. One such penalty led to a phenomenal 50m kick by De Achaval to forge a 44-10 lead mere minutes
into the second half. After a tussle left the Steelers two men lighter than Denver, White was able to notch his fourth try
of the match, converted by De Achaval. Provo showed resiliency as they punched the ball over from a short distance
and LuaLua converted the try by one of their massive props, drawing to 49-17. De Achaval closed out the scoring with a
penalty kick, making the final tally 52-17 in favor of the Denver Barbarians.

With a light north breeze and sunny skies, Raptors and Steelers set about in determination of who'd host the
next round of playoffs and who would travel to Texas for their matchup on May 4 th. 80 minutes of rock 'em,
sock 'em action on, and those directives were sorted.
Glendale got up first on a penalty goal in the eighth minute by scrumhalf Shaun Davies after a failure to
release tackled player at breakdown: 3-nil Raptors.
A defense-confounding double-cocked pass by the canny Davies had left wing, Preston Bryant, untouched and
spiriting through a narrow gap to cross-and-dot. Along with Davies' completion, 10-nil at the 14th minute.
Glendale were swifter to the breakdown and surer at the grapple early, maintaining or exacting possession
with serious deliberation. A quickly-tapped penalty by Raptors #9 had center Mike Graham away along touch
for the try that made it 15-0 in the 17th minute.
Raptors kept heat on high as the Kettle boiled fractiously (JG?) and second row Austin Welch dove across the
paint for a touch down in the 22nd minute, making the numbers 22-0.
Glendale got another from blindside, Stan Maoli, converted by Davies and 29-0 at minute 34 were the new
numbers.
Now came Provo with their own #6, Petelo Sa, popping from the loose inclose to slice into goal for a touch
down converted by fullback, Ernest Lualua, and 29-7 were the tallies at the 36th minute.
Glendale lock, Doug Graves, grounded just prior to referee Pete Winkelbauer's halftime signal a try converted
by Davies and the lads went to break at 36-7.
Raptors trys by: Bryant (45', 48' and 80'); Mark Sztndera (53' and 61'); Dewon Reed (65'); and Pat Doyle (78')
versus a lone touch down by Steelers tighthead prop, Solomon Latu in the second stanza meant a final of 79-
12 for the record at Winkelbauer's last blast.

Denver Highlanders v Kansas City Blues
lineout action image: trotski
KC Blues and hometown Highlanders squared off at the Infinity Rugby Complex' Stadium in the first match of
the day on Sunday. The ideal weather conditions offered sharp contrast to the intensity and ferocity of action
on the pitch as each side strove for victory and the remaining playoff seed. Kansas City Blues RFC came into
town as fourth seed in the league, needing to at minimum maintain that position on the table for
advancement to the next round of playoffs at the territorial level. Denver Highlanders had beaten Boulder RFC
on Saturday and looked to claim the last playoff
with the win on Sunday in the Kettle.
Smart kicks into space for territory by Blues
standoff, Kelly Mercer, put Highlanders under
pressure early followed by short, banging jags
from its big men off the KC rolling maul made
ground gains and kept the Blues on the front
foot. Well-grappled turnovers by the
Highlanders defenders enabled clearances from
Highlanders #10, Ewan Scott: action lively and
mobile from referee Pete Winkelbauer's first
whistle.
Kansas City were judged to have entered at
breakdown from the side and a well-struck Scott
penalty from just inside the Blues 10 meter line
put Highlanders ahead 3-nil at minute 12. image: haywood

Mercer was wide on penalty conversion for a Highlanders offside infringement two minutes on, but Scott put
paid to a second Blues infraction (JG?) from beyond midway with a boomer that just cleared the crossbars and
Denver were up by half dozen in the 16 th minute.
A Highlanders clearance boot that failed to find touch and enabled Blues fullback, Ed Mills, opportunity to
display confounding countering capability as he looped and stunted through a defense on its heels fro better
than 50 meters before touching down for Mercer's conversion and we'd a new leader, 7-6, with 27 ticks
recorded.
Another blistering counter by the Blues #15 from inside his 10 meter line for twenty-five meters set up the
sweet offload to inside center, Tim Curtis. That #12 put the chase behind him as he finished a fast forty for the
grounding that along with Mercer's added deuce had Blues up 14-6, three-quarters of the way through the
first period.
A penalty struck true by Mercer from between the hashes 30 meters out, just prior to Winkelbauer's halftime
signal, had KC in front 17-6 as the lads went to lockers for instruction.
Mercer's well-found form meant another three for Blues in the 42nd minute as the flyhalf split the sticks from
the interior hash at the 22 and the numbers turned to 20-6.
Kansas City fast distribution had scrumhalf Casey Cummings streaking along touch for a quick 25 meters to
touch down for Mercer's conversion and Blues had extended their advantage to 27-6 by minute number 45.
Yellow shown to Blues had KC down a man in the 52nd minute and Highlanders were swift in making that
bonus work as second row, Brent Shepard, crashed across the paint after a pair of pounding phases inside the
Blues business district: 27-11 for Kansas City.
Blues responded in estimable fashion as Mercer threaded his way into Highlanders territory and put flyer, Joe
D'Agostino, in position to finish surely for Mercer's conversion and it was 34-11 Blues with the musicians yet
one man light nearing the three-quarter point in the match.
Ed Mills showed another extended patch of brilliance as he skipped, twirled and stuttered through a
congested midfield and raced over for the try which, along with Mercer's completion, made numbers of 41
and 11 as Kansas City celebrated the return to even sides at minute 62.
Back came Highlanders with a rush to goal by its forwards that had 8-man, Clinton Camp, in possession well
within the Blues business district and the backrow lock powered across goal for a score of 41-16 at 64.
KC were to have the final shout, however, with their own 8-man, Lewis Mills, shrugging off a tackle en route to
the Promised Land for a try and the final points of the day slotted by Mercer, who accounted for 18 markers
on the day: final record of Blues 48- Highlanders 16. Scoring

University of Colorado upended University of Wisconsin, 54-24, Saturday up on the StoveTop at Infinity Rugby

Glendale v Chaparral: high school friendly
information by: Jared Heath
Glendale played Chaparral early on Saturday to kick off the day's full rugby schedule. Raptors led the
Wolverines 17-15 at the half, but with Wolverines snakebit by injury in the first period of play, Glendale were
able to open things up a good bit in the second stanza, rolling to victory at 58-15.

Grizzlies v Angels
high school league competition of two, 30-minute halves
Denver East High Angels flew into Colorado Springs Grizzlies home grounds, "The Crater", at Mountain Ridge
Middle School to determine the club that would hold topspot in the premier division of Colorado High School
Rugby. After a competition featuring 11 trys in total, that issue was sorted. A pair of lead changes early and
two incidences of knotted scores in the first half well-testified to the level and quality of play on this day.
Under coolly overcast skies with spots of sun, the travelers drew first after extended play in Grizzlies territory
as swift service from the breakdown put flyer, Connor Messer, free along touch to close quickly, winning the
twenty meter race to touch down in the corner. East #10, Jackson Bock, was near uncanny with the
sticksplitting add-on from the sideline and Angels were up by seven in the 16th minute.
Springs drew even when flyhalf Seth Halliman fended his way to space at Denver's 22, crossing-and-dotting for
inside center Matt Skipworth's conversion: 7-the-pair at minute 23.
With Colorado Springs keeping ball in hand, attempting to run from their own 22, a lazy hanger in the centers
enabled the crafty poach by Angels outside center, Adam Jester – twenty-five fast meters on, and with Bock's
completion, the visitors were back in front, 14-7, as the crowd of nearly five hundred roared encouragement
for their respective favorites, the Crater percolated and referee Rick Goldammer signaled the re-start in the
25th minute.
The home team worked their way into Angels territory in steady surges from the maul. Twenty-five meters
from goal, Halliman dummied to space and freed Skipworth for his crossing; and with the center's own
conversion, the tallies were drawn yet again with 28 ticks gone by.
Grizzlies claimed the lead with Halliman displaying fine cutting capabilities through twenty meters, stepping
right to shake a defender and then left to confound another enroute to the grounding converted by
Skipworth, and it was 21-14 at the sound of Goldammer's halftime blast.
Colorado Springs got right after it in the second minute of the last stanza as 8-man, Cam McGregor, identified
space outside and crossed for the grounding completed by Skipworth that put Springs up 28-14.
But East were not done by a long shot. With Angels attacking at force in the Grizzlies business district, a
Colorado Springs player was caught laggard at breakdown. The ensuing quickly-tapped penalty was served to
tighthead, Duncan "Ice" Frost. Closeby goal with a step and a forward lean, this cool customer is virtually
unstoppable and no one could as the big man touched down for Bock's conversion, and the tallies tightened at
28-21, four minutes into the last half.
csucucsucucsucucsucucsucucsucucsucucsucucsucucsucucsucucsucucsucucsucu
harlequinsraptorssundayharlequinsraptorssundayharlequinsraptorssundayharlequinsraptorssunday
Colorado Springs extended their advantage with an unconverted try by Halliman for his tryple and the
numbers turned to 33-21 after 39 minutes.
Now the mix boiled merrily as first one side and then the other made significant ground gains only to suffer
loss of possession and the requisite slide into their respective defensive postures. With an East put to the set
piece in their own business district, a lightning strike by Grizzlies #2 Patty Donovan exacted the poach, and the
snatch at the back of the scrum by backrow lock McGregor enabled the sure step and crashover touch down
for Skipworth's conversion: 40-21, twenty-six minutes into the second half.
Another score by McGregor for his tryple and a last grounding by the ubiquitous hooker Donovan at the death.
With Skipworth striking true at both conversions, a final of 54-21 was recorded. The Grizzlies now lead the
premier Colorado high school division by a single table point over East and Aurora Saracens with two fixtures
yet to play for those sizable bears while Sarries are done and East have one remaining on its plate afore the
playoffs begin next week.

Changes to the TRY League:
Over the offseason there have been a few significant changes to our league. Most importantly, age group naming has
changed to even years and we have added 2 new divisions (U13 and U14). For example, last year we had U7, U9, U11,
U13, and U15. This has changed to U8, U10, U12, U13, U14, and U16. This has changed nothing as far as age group
breakdowns other than the label except for the U13 and U14 levels which are now single age divisions. See below for
appropriate age divisions.

Fabulist Scribe H. Richard and L. Trotski, RA's Pithy Scribe, for Rugby Scribes
Heineken Cup semifinal fixtures on the upcomer, Saturday April 27 and Sunday April 28:
Clermont Auvergne meets Munster at Stade de la Mosson in Montpellier down on the Mediterranean
coast in the south of France. Not a real home match for the old Montferrand boys, yet much less distance
than Munster will transit. Munster dropped out of the RaboDirect Pro12 by virtue of its loss to Leinster on
the Saturday, so it’s all or naught for the Munstermen this weekend, while Clermont are still in the
running for Top XIV honors as well as the Heineken Championship. Double-up is on the French plate, yes?
In the Sunday semifinal, Toulon jumps the channel for their much anticipated date with Saracens at
Twickenham; Sarries are in form with Toulon only slightly less so. However each side suffered defeat in
their respective leagues on the weekend - Sarries losing by a nickel at Castle Grim to Cherry-and-Whites,
and Toulon one behind Grenoble at the end of their 80 - but Saracens managed to hold onto the topspot
in the Premiership while Toulon slipped one-point behind league-leaders, Clermont.
Rugby Atlas predicts:
Clermont Auvergne 32 – Munster 12, oui?;
Saracens 28 – Toulon 29, non?

RaboDirect Pro12 – last weekend of RDP12 play upcoming on May 3/4/5: Three of the four semifinalists are
set. Ulster, Leinster, Glasgow are in regardless of the results of their last matches. Scarlets currently sit
fourth at the table, four points ahead of Ospreys. On the weekend:
Ulster v Cardiff Blues: Ulster should like to win to maintain their topspot, but Blues would like
nothing better than to unseat the Ulstermen from their perch as a happy ending for those
Welshmen; but if Ulster should lose w/o a bonus point…
Leinster, who play the last playoff-seat-seeking Ospreys, could overtake their provincial brethren
with a win over Ospreys at the RDS, which will also obviate any rugby-related travel plans of those
Welsh;
Glasgow transit the Irish Sea for a final date at Connacht; That Irish province has been undulate all
season and they’re 5-4 at home; Glasgow will like a win here along with a Leinster loss – that’ll put
the Warriors back in Scotstoun to host their semifinal;
Scarlets v Benetton Treviso: Fair simple for the Scarlets, they win-they’re in and on the road for
their semifinal, they lose and Ospreys win, Scarlets might travel on the weekend, but they’ll not play
RDP12 rugby when they get wherever they’re going;

4: Four semifinalists are already determined: Saracens,
Leicester, Harlequins and Northampton, though who
their opponents are will be determined by the outcomes
of this weekend’s matches:
If Saracens beat Bath they be first seed regardless
of any other results
If Saracens lose with no bonus-point, and
Leicester win (v London Irish) with a bonus point,
Leicester will take first seed, yet Saracens can
finish no less than second, so they’ll still host a
semifinal in any case
Harlequins v Saints: If Leicester lose to the Irish,
then Harlequins, if they beat Northampton, will
have the opportunity to overtake Leicester should
they win with the bonus point

Super XV:
It was Christian Lealiifano with 19 on account against 19 for all the Reds as Brumbies sis-kissed their
northern cousins only via openside Liam Gill’s late try and its conversion by Quade Cooper, otherwise
it’s an unhappy Reds team at home;
Waratahs put 15, unanswered points onboard in the first forty, and though Chiefs caught up and
managed the overtake in the 71st minute, it was Tahs replacement prop John Ulugia on the hard
charge at the end of a fine movement at 76' that proved the decider and the home side topped their
guests, 25-20;
Sharks in sodden Kings Park could only manage six from a pair of P. Lambie penalty goals, while
Cheetahs grounded twice, one for either wing, both Raymond Rhule (speedy in the 32nd minute) and
Willie Le Roux (sneaky at 77') very fast flyers on the day; Sharks were in Cheetahs business district at
the end of the day, but their last assault failed five meters from the Land;
Hurricanes held off Force, 22-16, at Westpac Stadium in Wellington on a bit of a fractious outing this
day; Force halfback, Alby Mathewson, on the highlight reel; Force certainly brought it in the second
stanza, but not enough insufficient time;
Crusaders are the latest side to extend Highlanders dreadful start with 24-8 victory at Rugby League
Park;
Bulls trampled Southern Kings at a sloppy Mytjalies-Mandela Bay Park, 34-0; Morne Steyn has only
scored 1,300+ Super Rugby points; flyer Akona Ndungane with the bonus point try at the death;
