Something is driving me CRAZY!!!Living with a disability in Ireland is hard at the best of times, but living with a disability in rural Ireland is a whole other story.I was born and raised in a rural community in the West of Ireland and as a person with a disability I have encountered many challenges, the most striking of these challenges is access. Access can encompass many things from access to the built environment e.g. access to shops, libraries and even residential houses, to access to services and information such as people’s rights and entitlements and access to health and other services. One of the most noticeable things for me as a wheelchair user is the contrast between urban and rural living. When you live in a rural community people with disabilities are often very isolated because it is more difficult for us to get out there and make ourselves seen and heard. This is largely to do with a lack of knowledge and understanding of the difficulties that people like me face. A simple example of this is access to footpaths in rural towns. There is either no access because there are no dips to get on and off a footpath or as in the case of my hometown there are dips but you cannot access them because people who drive park across the dips making access impossible. Imagine trying to access a footpath for as long as 30 minutes and having no success, this is something that I face on a daily basis. The saddest part is that more people with disabilities could access their own communities a basic right if there was more knowledge by able bodied people. Ignorance is not bliss. Drivers, please remember the next time you are looking for a parking space to think of the person coming after you.I believe access is a right not a privilege. This is the thing that drives me crazy.

Kick out The Bucket ListHaving a rare, incurable form of cancer I live my life on a three monthly basis between scans. Lists for the future are of no use to me; I live in the present relishing in every experience that life offers. It is not the grand plans that give the quality to my life but simply being alive. With the sword of Damocles poised above my head I learned to experience pleasure in all that I do. I suggest kicking the Bucket List out and start living now. • Anonymous

TV LunacyWhy I ask you my fellow TV audience, WHY! That every time my fingers touch to activate the remote my intellect screams in deafening decibels. I grab my full head of black hair, close my eyes, and drop my head for another day of TV lunacy. It’s almost a travesty that so many people’s lives are not far from bankrupt, that they feel the need to take their personal and social graces from these make-believe, no talent,brain-dead characters they call “Reality TV Stars.” The Jersey Shore, Keeping Up With The Kardashians. Also, I can’t leave out, the always popular, E! Entertainment Channel, with a very wide assortment of self-inflicted, rubber-mask faced hosts like Joan Rivers.

Ring Rings in Praise for Race The Minister of State for Tourism and Sport, Michael Ring TD, recently launched the newwebsite of the Kilmore Triathlon Club. The Minister also launched this year’s Blacksod Point Challenge race, which will take place next September. Speaking at the launch, which took place in the Broadhaven Bay Hotel, Belmullet, Minister Ring noted that “the race is a wonderful event for the region and showcases everything that’s good about Erris”. He went on to say, “I have nodoubt that the race will be a very successful event and will only go from strength to strength”. Former Race Director, Jason Mangan, opened the launch as Gaeilge and said that, without the help of the local community and the support of local businesses, the triathlon would not be thesuccess that it is today. The Chairman of Kilmore Triathlon Club, Alan Concannon, said, “The new website is fantastic and will be instrumental in promoting the area, developing the club and expanding the race.” The club is expecting over 300 participants to take on the challenging course this September. The new Race Director, Thomas Geoghegan, explained that the course is a real test ofendurance, pushing athletes to their limits. He added, “Even though the race has

become known as one of Ireland’s toughest triathlons, the spectacular views of the magical and mythical Erris peninsula – and the friendliness of locals - has attracted hundreds of competitors every year.” Rina Garrett from Erris Beo praised the efforts of the club committee. She said, “The Blacksod Point Challenge has proven to be a massive boost to the local economy since its inception in 2008. Families and friends of the competitors all travel to the region for the entire weekend, with the race status now recognised nationally and internationally“.The Blacksod Point Challenge Triathlon will

take place on Saturday, September 21. It is a National Series Race (sanctioned by Triathlon Ireland), starting with a 1,500m swim in the Atlantic Ocean, followed by a fast 43km bike ride, and an amazing 10km all-terrain run across the sand dunes of Fál Mór.If you are interested in joining the club or entering the race, check out the new website – www.kilmoretriathlonclub.com - or find out more by emailing [email protected] orby calling 086 3636327.

Know your rights: Voluntary PRSI contributionsQuestion: I intend retiring at age 60 later this year. What should I do to make sure I qualify for the State Pension (Contributory)? Answer: There are rules about the number of PRSI contributions you must have to qualify for the State Pension (Contributory). If you are aged under 66 and you are no longer working and paying PRSI contributions or signing for credits, you may be eligible to make voluntary contributions to help maintain your social insurance record. To be eligible to make voluntary contributions you must: * Have a certain number of PRSI contributions paidundercompulsoryinsurance in either employment or self-employment *Apply to make your voluntary contributions within 12 months after the end of the last completed contribution year during which you last paid compulsory insurance or you were

last awarded a credited contribution * Agree to pay voluntary contributions from the start of the contribution week that follows the week in which you leave compulsory insurance. The number of paid PRSI contributions you must have to become a voluntary contributor is changing. Up to 6 April 2013 you had to have at least 260 PRSI contributions paid under compulsory insurance. From 6 April if you want to become a voluntary contributor you will need to have at least 364 PRSI contributions paid.

The rate of voluntary contribution you will have to pay depends on the last Class of PRSI you pay. If you paid PRSI at Class A, E or H you pay a contribution rate of 6.6% of your reckonable income in the previous tax year, subject to a minimum payment of €500. If you paid PRSI at Class S you pay a special flat rate of €500. You must pay the full contribution for the year no later than 5 months after the end of the year in which the payment is due. To become a voluntary contributor, you must complete application form VC 1 and return it to Client Eligibility

Services, Social Welfare Services, Cork Road, Waterford. Further information is available from Citizens Information Centre, Main Street, Belmullet and Phone Service, call 0761 07 6030.

Spring Has Arrived

What better time to start your shape up for summer plan. With Unislim’s Forever Free plan it couldn’t be easier. Lots of fresh, wholesome, healthy foods. No starvation or ‘diet’. We don’t do ‘diets’ at Unislim! There are little steps you can take to get you to your target weight.

1. Spring clean: Clean out cupboards; get rid of any temptations. If it’s not in, you can’t eat it.

2. Plan: Fill your fridge & cupboards with lots of free, fresh, healthy foods. Plan what you are going to eat tomorrow. That way you are in control of your food; not the food controlling you.

3. Fill at each mealtime on the free foods. You won’t have room for the processed stuff if you do.

4. Keep a food diary. It gets you thinking about what you are doing. “If you bite it, write it!”

5. Make sure that you get to class to weigh-in weekly – good week or bad. You don’t know for sure until you step on that scales how the week has gone.

Also try to stay for the motivational talk in class.

You will always pick up something new.

Mayo U12's beat RoscommonThe Mayo Under 12 team maintained their 100% record in the Jim Cashin 12 Cup on Sunday, 14th April with a hard earned victory over a gallant Roscommon team in round four of the SFAI inter league played in terrible conditions in Manulla. Roscommon started the brighter and were a goal up after 5 minutes, playing with a very strong wind at their back. Mayo initiated a response and through playing some good football, they were back on level terms after 20 minutes when Dylan Fell got onto a loose ball on the edge of the box and rounded the Roscommon defender and finished neatly in the bottom corner. Mayo were winning all the 50/50 balls in the centre of midfield and Jack O’Connor and Luke Dawson were causing Roscommon lots of problems in the wings. Despite the pressure from out wide, it was all square going in at the break. In the second half Mayo introduced Luke O’Reilly and they started to get on top in all areas of the pitch. Playing with a strong wind at their back, Mayo had a number of chances to take the lead, particularly when Ronan Dervan went close with a well hit shot from close range but the Roscommon keeper was equal to his effort. With 15 minutes remaining Luke O’Reilly showed some great skill by beating his man and striking an unstoppable shot into the bottom right hand corner to put the home side in front. Roscommon tried everything to get back into the game but they could not get the better of the Mayo defence. Mayo settled for the 3-1 win and it confirmed their top spot in their group. Mayo now face Inishowen on the 27th April at home in the SFAI Jim Cashin Cup quarter final.

The story of the grey seal Over three hundred years ago here in the Barony of Erris, there lived a man Brian Rua Carrabine who prophesized many events and changes many of which I have witnessed in my own lifetime. One of these events he said would happen was that a grey seal would cross Termon Hill and anyone who killed it wouldn’t live to see the year out. This happened in the early 1900’s, a grey seal did come across Termon Hill from the sea near Falmore to the south, he travelled a distance between 2½ and 3 miles over land until he reached the north side of Termon Hill within a ¼ of a mile of Blacksod Bay, he was spotted by a man named Reilly, he prevented the seal in reaching the sea by killing it. In those days the oil and pelt was valuable and within a year that young man was dead. As foretold by Carrabine some 200 years previous.

AN RÓN GLASRinne fear darbh ainm Brian Rua ó Cearrabháin as Iorras tairgreacht cupla céad bliain ó shin. Tháinig cuid mhaith isteach a thug sé síos ag an am, ceann amháin a bhfuil trácht air san gceanntar seo, dúirt sé go dtiocfadh rón glas trasna tríd Chnoc an Tearmain agus cé a mharodh é nach gcuireach sé amach an bhliain. Tháinig fear de chuid na háite trasna air agus é ar é bheallach anuas Taobh an Tearmain, bhuail sé agus mharaídh an rón bocht. Bhí craiceann róin ag dul a luach agus ar nóidh bhí chuile úsáid dhá den ola, dhá cuir í lampaí agus coinglíní le solas a thabhairt, bhí laigheas ar phiantaí cnámh ach an ola a chuimilt isteach sa gcraiceann. Ba dheacair a theacht ar rón ar thalamh tirim, thonaic an fear seo a sheans ach farior mar a bhí tugtha síos ag Brian Rua sa tairgreacht na blianta fada fionna roimhe sin cailleadh é fhéin sul a raibh an bhliain amuigh. SAFETY. The first task of working through chronic unhappiness is to learn how to create a SENSE OF SECURITY & SAFETY in your experience. Those parts of you which are feeling vulnerable, in pain and despairing need to be met. The principle at work here is that CHANGE ONLY COMES ABOUT when those parts feel safe enough to move on and change. SHIFT. Creating this safety involves a significant SHIFT from trying to fix, think and solve to being more aware and present with yourself. We can learn to ha-bitually SHIFTING OUR ATTENTION into BODILY AND SENSORY AWARE-NESS (Mindfulness). This is a rich spectrum and tapestry of experience which then sets a safer context to SENSE feelings and emotions WITH THE WHOLE SENSING BODY. The magic of self awareness in this way creates movement and flow where there once was stuckness and habitual reactions. Such a shift is helped by such things as time in NATURE, YOGA, EXERCISE and MEDITA-TION. Anything that gets you more into your body which have many health benefits besides and are equally important in creating more spacious open and happier states. KINDNESS. Once you are able to become more self aware in this SAFER way, another important, if not pivotal practise is the ability to TRANSLATE what your feelings are communicating to you. Rather than them being the object of dislike and blame (which is the heart of the issue) we learn to come into KIND relation-ship with them. How would you hold a PUPPY if it were in distress? You would-n’t tell it off or shout at it! The same goes for those parts in us that are hurt or in desperate need. So you learn to hold your puppy with UNCONDITIONAL KINDNESS. Then you enquire as to it’s NEED, does it want Love? Reassur-ance? Warmth? Safety? Connection? Play? Etc. In this way the feeling trans-forms, having communicated its underlying need. It's truly amazing to have discovered in my journey through chronic depression and anxiety, that FEEL-INGS ARE actually WANTING TO COMMUNICATE THEIR UNMET NEEDS! The above points offer only two of a many limbed approach towards wellbeing. INDIVIDUALS COUPLES FAMILIES SCHOOLS GOVERNMENT SMALL BUSINESS COORPORATE

Chronic unhappiness is I imagine something all of us have experienced at one time or another. One way of describing depression or anxiety is being overcome by unhappiness. In my case, I experienced depression chronically, and anxiety often acutely with panic and terror attacks. Looking back from where I am, it seems like a different universe, not just a different world. I can say that today I am even grateful for something I felt tor-mented and desperate to get out of (and yet the more trapped I became!) Grateful because I now have a true appreciation for my own sense of well-being and relative freedom. So what can I share of what I learned on my journey to wholeness? I offer my main discoveries to you now in the spirit of exploration and questioning. You can perhaps test them out in your own experience and get in touch with me if you wish to explore further.

The newly designed Erris Beo appDeveloped by Sticky Pixels in Eachléim, was demonstrated in Áras Inis Gluaire last week. The app includes an interactive map of the region which shows fishing spots, picnic tables, lighthouses and other points of interest. It also allows users to quickly find nearby accommodation, food or where they can grab a quick pint. Local walks and cycles are also included in the app and can track the user's location while out and about. Local businesses are being offered the opportunity to be listed in the app for €20 for the year (€10 if no photo is needed). Tourists and locals can click directly into business websites or press a "call" button to phone directly. Businesses with a fixed location will also be shown on a map and the user will have the option to easily "get directions" using their phone's GPS and mapping app.The app is due to be launched shortly, in time for the summer season and will be well advertised around the region and beyond. The app will be free to download from the iTunes store and an android version will follow later this year.Anyone who would like to feature in the app can fill out the

form at: http://app.errisbeo.ie and Erris Beo will be in touch regarding payment. Search for "Erris Beo App - Demo Video" on youtube to see a preview.

There are no shortage of disagreements andmisunderstandings, all providing hilarious consequences. Last two performance's will run on Friday 26th April & Saturday 27th April. 8pm start. All proceeds going to the Glencastle Special Needs School. Tickets from Brogans Eurospar and Áras Inis Gluaire (Belmullet Civic Centre). Admission €10.

Mayo Genealogy Group was established just over a year ago and a committee was formed last summer. I, Kathryn Murphy was elected P.R.O. for the Erris area and also secretary for the group. My role as secretary is to take the minutes of the meetings which are held every second Saturday of each month from 11a.m. to 1 p.m. At the meetings we discuss the agenda which is compiled by the Chairperson and when the meeting ends members help newcomers and others research websites relating to ancestry/genealogy etc.My role as P.R.O. combined with the business I run with my husband Pap Murphy, would like to invite all genealogists both local and further afield to come together here at Turas Siar, near Clogher Post Office, 11 miles outside Belmullet on the Blacksod Road for a genealogists gathering. Turas Siar is a language and culture research centre and we specialise in local history, archaeology, genealogy, local crafts, family gatherings, local placenames and their meanings. We are open 9am til late to the public 7 days a week.We would like to discuss with all genealogists, a gathering at Turas Siar and when it could take place which would be suitable for everyone so why not give Pap or myself a call on 097 85011/ 087 6990505 for further information on any of the above. Our email address is [email protected] and our website address is www.turassiar.com

A saucepan lid from out of space One fine evening back in the mid 1980’s, sometime during the summer my two uncles and brother were returning from an evening’s fishing trip, they were heading home into Cartron Bay in their three man curragh when they noticed something hurtling from the sky at a terrific speed and it dropped into the sea just yards behind the curragh. A few seconds earlier and this thing would have dropped right into the curragh, more than likely sinking it. Now to describe this object as something resembling a big saucepan lid, circular and very shiny. At low tide for several weeks and many times after they searched the strand exactly where it came down and found no trace of the object they saw that evening.

CLÁR POTA ÓN SPÉIRTráthnóna bhreá shamhraidh siar í lár na naoi déag ochtóidí bhí mo bheirt uncail agus mo dhreatháir ag tíocht isteach Pol an Chartúir in éis an lá a chaitheamh amuigh ag iascaireacht. Tuairim is leath bealaí idir an cladach agus Bár an Phonta, sin é an pointe is faide amach ó Dheas de Ghob mhuigh Rathain, nuair thug an fear a bhí ina shuíghe ag iomrú ar an seas deirí rud mar bheadh clár pota ag titim ón spéir le luas mór. Choinic an triúr acu é nuair a bhí sé go díreach ós cionn dheireadh an churraí, bhuail sé an fharraige faoi thuairt agus chuaigh go tóin poil. Bhí an t-ádh dearg leó nach raibh fad an churraí de mhoill orthú, dhá mbeadh is cinnte go dtiteadh sé sa gcurrach. An lá ina dhiaidh chuairte siad an tráigh nuair a bhí an lán mara imithe amach agus riamh ó shin ní bhfuairas tada san áit ar thit an rud seo.Courtesy Turas Siar

Keep an eye on Kids FunEggs-Periments: Balancing EggFirst get permission to use kitchen equipment and eggs.

YOU WILL NEED

• One raw egg and some Salt

HERE’S HOW

. Take the raw egg and try to balance it on a hard

surface (you will have a difficult time keeping the

egg balanced).

. Now, make a tiny mound of salt on a hard, smooth

surface.

. Very carefully balance the egg on top of the salt,

then gently blow the excess salt away. With

patience and a steady hand, you should succeed.

How it Works - Salt crystals are almost perfect cubes, and

they help form a pedestal that supports the egg.

Create a motion OceanHOW DOES IT WORK? - Water is denser than oil. Plus, the two liquids

never mix. So when the water moves, it pushes the oil around,

making shapes like waves.

YOU WILL NEED

• Clear jar with lid

• Water

• Blue food coloring

• Glitter

• Baby oil

• Plastic floating toys

1. Fill the jar halfway with water.

2. Add drops of food coloring until you like the color you see. Shake

in a little glitter.

3. Pour in baby oil until the jar is three-quarters full.

4. Place a floating toy on top of the oil, then screw on the lid tightly.

5. Shake the jar gently to set your ocean in motion.
