FROM THE DIRECTOR’S CHAIR
It’s a great honour to be creating the programme for the 10th Erupt Festival. Taupō is a very special region
and Taupō’s Erupt Arts Festival is a very special event, being one of nine amazing New Zealand regional
arts festivals that bring artists and audiences together in such an exceptional way.
This year’s programme acknowledges the great Erupt Festivals that have gone before and bring together
over 100 stellar new artists from theatre, dance, music, visual arts, fashion and comedy alongside some all
time Erupt Festival favourites.
Erupt Festival 2014 carries three key themes – Shakespeare, Fashion and Be Part of the Art. Shakespeare
stars, but not like you’ve ever seen him before and The Art of Fashion puts New Zealand fashion designers
and performing artists on the same stage.
Most significantly Erupt 2014 provides arts lovers and those who think art is not
for them (yet!) with exciting opportunities to be ‘Be Part of the Art’. From the
Taupō cast of ‘Tracing Hamlet’ to being guests at ‘Party with the Aunties’ (no -
you don’t have to do anything), to the young photographers exhibition, young
dancers in Alice, public workshops and schools programme, Erupt 2014 brings
New Zealand’s top artists and Taupō talent together.

It’s hard to believe that it is two years since the call was made: “It’s a wrap!” as Erupt 2012 reached its
conclusion, but here we go again. The first biennial Taupō Arts Festival was held in 1996, and now, 20
years later, the curtain is due to rise again.
The Taupō region has altered markedly since 1996, and the 2014 programme has kept pace with the times,
while providing a broad selection of artistic and cultural events. From Shakespeare with a modern twist, to
comedy and impressive drama, traditional string music and Opera, through Jazz, Soul and Hip Hop, dance, a
fashion show with a difference, and visual arts, we hope you will find something to appeal to everyone, far
and wide.
Once again, such an enterprise as Erupt 2014 would not be possible without the ongoing support of our
sponsors, patrons, funders, friends and supporters, to whom we are continually
grateful. My thanks go out to them, and of course to our audiences, who make it
all worthwhile.

Great Lake Centre Theatre
The heart of the Erupt Festival is the Great
Lake Centre (GLC), with daily shows in the main
Theatre. The GLC is also the place to visit and
purchase your Erupt Festival tickets and is home
to the Erupt Festival office, which will be open
weekdays from early March, right through to the
end of the Festival with staff on hand to answer
any Festival queries.
The Beechtree Suites Crater Room
The hottest venue in town…The Crater Room
at the GLC is a unique purpose-built cabaret
and music venue. In a new, intimate and
changing form The Crater Room will open with
the glittering fashion gala and continue to erupt
with all kinds of music, cabaret, physical theatre
and comedy throughout the Festival.
The Malcolm Flowers Insurance Cube
The Cube is the gateway to the main Festival
venue and the social hub and unique
performance space of the Festival. It’s THE
place to experience new shows and to meet
friends and artists and enjoy a good wine or
coffee, tasty snacks and great company both
before and after any evening show. Along with
music (both free and ticketed shows), visual
art, children’s shows, workshops and talks the
Cube is the place to be. If you are at a loss as to
what to do or have a moment to spare, pop into
the Cube and catch the Festival vibe. You never
know who you might meet or what you might
experience.
Other Venues
Erupt 2014 travels beyond the heart of the
Festival at the GLC to the Taupō Museum and
Art Gallery, which plays host to two exhibitions
plus artist talks. A minute walk along the
‘Unison Erupt Light Trail’ in the Tongariro
Domain takes you to the Rotary Hall (formely
the Senior Citizen’s Rooms) where the entirely
local cast of ‘Tracing Hamlet’ will lead you
through the search for the errant prince.
New to Erupt is the Taupō Rugby Club where you
can join the ‘Party with the Aunties’ and enjoy
the hilarious ‘The Bitches’ Box’.
For the first time in 2014 Erupt travels to Reporoa
bringing ‘The Bitches’ Box’ to Reporoa Hall and
to Turangi with ‘Out of the Box’ (Hip Hop with
Attitude) at Turangi Gymnasium.
Taupō Town Centre is the place to indulge your
retail therapy needs with a wide range of exciting
shops and is the place to pick up essential Festival
supplies.

Schools Programme The Schools Programme, coordinated by Taupō REAP (Rural Education Activities Programme)

The Art of Fashion is a new and glittering fashion
runway show with a difference. Featuring some
of New Zealand’s top established and emerging
cutting edge designers modelled by a selection of
music, dance and theatre artists, who will be starring
in Erupt 2014, alongside professional dancers and
models. Gala night MC Michael Hurst will be joined
by other stellar cast members making it a night to
remember.
As well as a stunning fashion show The Art of
Fashion will give you a “taster” of artists performing
in the Erupt 2014.
You’ll see the gorgeous Bella Kalolo perform one of
the songs from her show in a sumptuous designer
gown, Sophie Voon day wear shown by dancers
from Footnote, new creations from Annah S
plus some of her WOW entries as well as new
collections pieces from Augustine, Wilson and
Trollope, Bittersweet and many others.
The Art of Fashion event is unique in an Arts Festival
context combining NZ fashion and NZ artists
performing in the Festival.

Back by popular demand the Unison Erupt Light
Trail turns the Tongariro South Domain into a
magical landscape.
The ‘Public Dreams Trust’ and Unison take you
on an enchanting journey through Taupō’s civic
heart – with all the favourites from 2012 and
some exciting new light installations for 2014.
Meander through the domain, down to the
mighty Waikato River, back through the Rose
Garden pathway and round to the Cube Club.
Follow the kilometre long path that will light
the trail and enjoy all the installations and
interactive features along the way.

At the peak of high society entertainment sits The Pianist‘s pianist. Impeccable in every aspect he
glides graciously through life never placing a foot out of step. He is, in a word: perfection. Or at least…
that’s what he thinks.
The Pianist is a solo comic contemporary circus piece by Thomas Monckton (Moving Stationery, Actor of the
Year - Chapman Tripp Theatre Awards 2012 and Stand out Performer - NZ Fringe 2012) and Circo Aereo (Finland).
The show is centered on, in, under, and around one of the most magnificent of all musical instruments, the
grand piano. Accompanying this elegant apparatus is the poised pianist himself. Only he is so focused on
impressing everyone that before he realises it, his show has transformed from the highbrow concert he hoped
for into the spectacularly amusing catastrophe that is The Pianist. To salvage his somewhat unsalvageable
dignity the pianist draws on his imagination and comes up with some rib-tickling and absurd results.
The Pianist mixes classical clowning with contemporary circus to produce a charming piece of comedy
about the allure of luxury. The Pianist premiered in Finland in September 2013 and premiered in New
Zealand at the Nelson Arts Festival in October 2013.

It’s Uncle Angus’ 50th birthday party and the whole whanau is reunited - Uncle Shane’s come all the way
from Perth and Te Manawa has brought his girlfriend Sia to meet the family for the first time.
There’ll be music, drama and plenty of laughter as three high-energy performers take on multiple roles,
seamlessly introducing characters we can all recognise.
Get together, grab a drink and some kai and be ready to sing-a-long if you wish - there’s a party at Aunty’s!
Created by Erina Daniels with her own Aunties in mind, this show is especially for family and friends
who have never been to the theatre. This is the perfect night out for all those who think that ‘art’ is
not for them.
Stay on after the show and enjoy live music and a drink with friends.

Tracing Hamlet By William Shakespeare and Sara Brodie
13th - 17th May | 6.30pm | Rotary Hall | $25
Something is rotten in the state of Denmark. A royal prince is missing, the media are having a field day
and the music of the Thieves of Mercy has been banned.
Thus the madness starts in this deconstructed production of Hamlet in which the audience travels
through the highways and byways of Rotary Hall to figure out what has happened to the errant prince.
Given the option to follow either “To be” or “Not to be” you’ll encounter the characters and best bits of
Shakespeare’s play, up close on a personal journey.
On offer are the Players, suitably Elizabethan with plenty of foolery, along with live baroque music. In
contrast, an underground gig will feature the original sounds of the Thieves of Mercy. Walk into the Rose
Gardens by moonlight as you head towards a climactic conclusion in what promises to be an unparalleled
encounter with Hamlet.
Originally commissioned by the Festival of Colour, this all Taupō production featuring an all-star cast
of local artists, Taupō performance students and intriguing on-the-move action through mysterious
rooms and eerie moonlit happenings. New Zealand’s leading director Sara Brodie returns to Taupō for
this unique take on Shakespeare.

On returning from their packed out season at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, The Bitches’ Box brings their
not-to-be-missed show to Erupt 2014.
“The Bitches’ Box is fall-off-the-chair funny, so brilliantly written and executed that only admiration stops you snorting.” The Times, UK
Actresses Amelia Dunbar and Emma Newborn, throw the spotlight on our closest working mates and give
voice to the inner workings of our four legged friends. They asked the question what would two bitches
talk about if they were locked in a box for 20 days?
Join bitches Twink and Red locked in a box, the Diesel dogs that ride in the truck all day long and don’t
do anything, the deranged ramblings of a pig hunting mongrel and misfit house dog for this fast-paced,
multi-character, side splitting comedy. The play presents a unique and hilarious take on life on the farm
through the eyes of two dogs on heat, locked in a bitches’ box.
The Bitches’ Box has been in hot demand since their sold out nationwide tour in 2012. Born out of a dream and
desire to provide rural audiences with a chance to experience a truly unique night out, actresses Amelia Dunbar
and Emma Newborn, toured the length and breadth of the South Island, sometimes venturing off the beaten
track to transform local woolsheds into dynamic theatre. The Bitches’ Box finally comes to Taupō. Don’t miss it.

VISUAL ARTS
Islanders by Jo Torr
8th May-2nd June | Taupō Museum | 9am-5pm *
Islanders surveys the work of New Zealand sculptor Jo Torr whose practice explores cultural encounter
and exchange through the lens of costume and textile history.
Torr is fascinated by early encounters between European and Polynesian peoples which frequently
involved the exchange of cloth. Her beautiful works unite materials and designs associated with
Polynesia and forms frequently associated with Europe.
This distinctive fusion of contemporary making with authentic historic costume is unique in New
Zealand. Since 2001, she has created and exhibited a number of discrete suites that talk to and reference
each other. Torr’s project is an ongoing contemporary art
project that references both historical material culture
and historical instances, both specific and general, of
the meeting of cultures. Visually her works defy easy
categorisation. Torr amplifies, and then deftly deploys,
the ineffability of her works to evoke the temporality and
surprise of encounters.
These works seem to reside on an island of their own.
This is a place of familiarity even though we visit the
island infrequently and see works that we have not
seen before. This is one of the delights of Torr’s work,
the ability to conjure up moments of encounter that
make us look afresh at history and reflect upon our
own responses and assumptions.
Islanders is a moment of encounter. Such
moments are created by mutual desire to connect
and communicate, where both commonality and
difference are present.

Elements of SurpriseTwo day art workshop by Richard Adams
12-13th May | 9am-4pm | GLC | $235
Artists of any level are welcome. The workshop
consists of the layering of surfaces on paper to
create textures that any artist can use in their
own work. Please bring your own paints and
brushes. Sheets of 300gram art paper will be
provided. There will be an opportunity to exhibit
works at the end of this 2 day workshop. Richard
is a gifted painter (as well as a gifted musician
as front man of the Nairobi Trio) whose work has
been exhibited nationally and internationally for
many years.

Lantern Making Workshop10th May | The Cube | 10am-2pm
Be Part of the Art – come along and create your own lantern masterpiece to take on the Unison Erupt
Light Trail Parade and to add to the Light Trail display at special lantern points amongst the trees in the
Tongariro South Domain for all to see. A great free family event open to all ages giving children and youth
the chance to experience the ‘Cube’ venue and Be Part of the Unison Erupt Light Trail.

What do we belong to? What does this
belonging mean?
“COLT could be a gun. It could be a horse. It could be a toy gun pointed at a horse.
Held by a dancer in a neutral coloured costume. The dancer might be under the
influence of instructions. They may be being used in a representational manner.
Something akin to a human metaphor or the expression of someone else’s
feeling. This dancer person can jump like a maniac, in order to indicate dancerly-
ness. Watch them wash their brain of all the good and all the bad. Watch, from
the safety of your seat. Watch them answer all the important questions”.

Hip Hop with Attitude featuring IDENTITY DANCE CREW (stars of NZ’s Got Talent 2013 and Silver Medal
winners of the 2013 Hip Hop World Champs) and innovative work from some of Aotearoa’s finest Hip Hop
choreographers and dancers.
This is competition level Hip Hop with original choreography telling stories of some of Aotearoa’s top Hip Hop
choreographers, Joe Ling, Andrew Jones, The Cesan Brothers, Simon Watts and Hopskotch Company. This is
fresh new choreography that challenges the perceptions of Hip Hop Dance. Choreographers from Out Of The
Box have all had stellar careers in Street Dance representing NZ at International competition and events.
This show melds Street Dance with other dance genres and contemporary processes to present a point
of view and showcase a new aesthetic. This culminates in a range of performances that still have the
excitement and skill you would expect from NZ finest street dancers, but also provides fodder for thought!
The show may also feature one local Hip Hop group selected by audition.

Bella Kalolo is a soul singer based in Wellington
and she comes with her classy three piece band.
Her Pacific roots are Samoan, Tongan and Maori.
She has worked extensively as a vocalist for the
last ten years performing and/or recording with
Don McGlashan, Dave Dobbyn, Hollie Smith,
Fat Freddy’s Drop, Tina Cross, Jackie Clarke,
Suzanne Lynch, the NZSO, and Nathan Haines
and most recently sang ‘I’m Every Woman’ with
the legendary Chaka Khan at Sydney Festival
to an ecstatic audience of over 60,000 people.
Bella also secured the Best Female Artist at last
year’s Pacific Music Awards.
Bella will take you on a journey through her
stories and what her songs are about. She will
show you what love, life, honesty and laughter
are about.
‘With the live and super-tight accompaniment of the band, she comes
across as one of James Brown’s funky divas. It really might be some lost vinyl

Music from Europe, China and New Zealand will be performed by one of New Zealand’s top chamber ensembles.
The Wellington-based Aroha String Quartet comprises Haihong Liu on violin, Blythe Press on violin,
Zhongxian Jin on viola and Robert Ibell on cello. All four musicians have stellar classical careers. Haihong,
Blythe and Robert are all members of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and Zhongxian, previously
of the Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra and the Xinghai Symphony Orchestra, now teaches at the New
Zealand School of Music.
Acclaimed as demonstrating “accomplished brilliance, soulfulness and sublime intensity in perfect
balance and tonal unity” (The Dominion Post), the Aroha String Quartet is firmly established as one of
the finest chamber music ensembles at the forefront of New Zealand chamber music.
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s vivacious String Quartet No 1 in G KV80 opens the programme. New Zealand
is represented by the lively and energetic ‘Dance of the Sidhe’ by Sam Piper and the fun and funky ‘Mondo
Rondo’ by Gareth Farr. The ‘Eight Chinese Folk Songs’ by Zhou Long provide a unique and colourful contrast.
The programme is completed in exhilarating fashion by Beethoven’s String Quartet in B flat major, Op. 18 No. 6.

album -’Three Feathers’, toured Australasia with Fly My Pretties, performed with her band at Rhythm &
Alps, The Auckland Folk Festival, Wanaka Festival of Colour, WOMAD 2012, The Christchurch Jazz Fest,
the Nelson Arts Festival, Prana & Tora Tora Tora.
She also performed with Fly My Pretties more recently in the Winery Tour ‘A Day on the Green’ and

Last year, Amiria played her successful Spring tour with Folk duo ‘Into the East’ around the North Island
and ‘Holly Arrowsmith’ around Southland and performed a full New Zealand tour this past summer with

A one-man band has never sounded so good.
Multi-instrumentalist Adam Page will wow you
with his high energy and his sense of fun whilst
making spontaneous symphonies on stage.
Adam specialises in recording live instruments,
including his beard and looping them to
compose intricate grooves in many different
styles. Starting with a saxophone, he’ll loop
its sound with bass, keys, percussion, vocals,
tuvan throat singing, beat boxing, ukulele, flute,
clarinet, kalimba beat boxing, banjo, clarinet,
and even the didgeridoo.
The result is an eclectic night of up-beat music
with styles ranging from funk to jazz, tango to
classical and a hint of afrobeat.
Adam has received multiple awards, has played
many major arts and music festivals including
WOMAD and Edinburgh Festival Fringe and has
just written and performed his first symphony

Estère is a girl with an MPC she calls Lola. She
produces all her own songs with Lola, mostly at
home in her pyjamas, where they play / record a
mixture of bass, synth, drums, vocal harmonies,
keyboard, whistles, claps, kazoo, desk tapping
and anything else that might take her fancy. She
layers her production with pulsating rhythms and
evocative melodies that adhere to the genre of
Electric Blue Witch Hop.
Two songs that she recorded in her bedroom (Cruel Charlie and Culture Clash) have received extensive
radio play on stations throughout New Zealand and have featured on various international blogs including
Disco Naivetè and Portals. With Lola, Estère aims to create unique corn music that embraces a large
variety of styles and leaves people guessing (herself included).

This is ‘music festival’ night bringing the sounds of summer to brighten up autumn with a night to get
down on the dance floor, or if you prefer to sit and watch, or both.
Brockerflower and the Sunshine Sound System have both wowed audiences from young to young at heart
at the summer music festivals including Rippon, Rhythm & Vines, Summerset, Homegrown, Lothlorien
and Splore.
The night will open with the Sunshine Sound System (DJ Downtown Brown aka Simon Hendl) and MC KPZ
Kyle Popham (aka Killa Puha) playing a sunshine set which typically includes lots of fresh bootlegs, a bit
of Reggae & Dub, plenty of Hip Hop, but no trash understand?!, Dancehall, original skool Soul and Funk
including a few crate-digger breaks.
It’s pretty much guaranteed that you will be (or want to be) up and dancing once Sunshine start doin’ their
thing, after which Sunshine will introduce…….
Brockerflower, are a monster nine piece contemporary Neo-Soul, Experimental, Hip Hop collective that
traverses through soundscapes, hard hitting Hip Hop grooves and soulful vocals.
Inspired by the beats of J Dilla, the Funk of Sly and the Family Stone, the Soul of D’angelo and Hip Hop
of The Roots, the Wellington based band was formed in 2009. Featuring a full band including a three
piece horn section and killer line up of emerging Soul vocalists in Estère Dalton, Zoe Moon Mahal and
Louis Baker.
The band released their 11 track debut studio album ‘Build It’ in January 2014. Featured in the ‘Who’s
Next’ section in Rip It Up magazine the band are being tipped as ones to watch.

Simon really is New Zealand’s finest impressionist and comes to Erupt with his most defining show yet.
In People, Simon brings to life an incredible array of characters born from the ‘everyday’ folk that have
inspired him throughout his life and career. These folk and their hilarious faults and foibles, strengths
and stresses (that we all identify with!) take centre stage. All these People, from the farmlands to
parliament, from boat ramps to office buildings, Simon juxtaposes unlikely combinations and outrageous
scenarios that see the characters interacting with each other, and Simon himself!
McKinney discovered his unique talents at only 10 years old, keeping his friends and family chuckling.
Encouraged by his parents, Simon went on to build a career which has seen him perform
all over New Zealand including a 2 year stint on the UK comedy circuit.

by the New Zealand public. These include the ‘thank you’ lady from the
supermarket, the old women at a rock concert, ‘that drunk guy’ and his

Useless former gang member, James Nokise
takes a light-hearted look at how people end up
in gangs and what happens afterwards. Coz no
matter where you’re from - bros are bros.
Having grown up in Whitby and The Hutt, James
was a teenage gang member turned comic
and playwright. With this unique insider’s
perspective at his fingertips, James’ comedy
is smartly provocative, with a political and
sociological bent.
James is known for his TV appearances (7 Days,
Comedy Gala, Ben and Steve, Comedy Crack
Up, and Back Benchers), as well as his weekly
spot on Radio New Zealand. So So Gangsta
was nominated for NZ International Comedy
Festival’s top award in 2013, The Fred Dagg
Award for best show and later in the year he came
home with the coveted Best Male Performer
Award from the 2013 NZ Comedy Guild.

To top off Erupt on the last night we bring you a special treat all the way from the UK and for the first
time in New Zealand.
Multi award-winning comedian, author and world record holder Tim FitzHigham is a man with lots of bad
ideas – for instance, he has rowed the English Channel in a bathtub. Recently, Tim spent a year lost to
‘gambling archaeology’ where he recreated the harebrained bets of his gentlemen adventurer forebears.
The result is this show about the 10 greatest bets in history, The Gambler.
The Gambler has played at the 2011 Edinburgh Festival Fringe to sell-out crowds and rave reviews and
been nominated for a Malcolm Hardee Cunning Stunt Award. For his efforts, Tim partially severed his
finger, broke a rib, fractured a toe and put his house up for sale.

TWO-IN-A-DAY discount tickets Book tickets to two shows on the same day and get
discounts on tickets to both. Tickets must be booked at the same time to get the discount on both shows. If you attend a show and then decide to go to another show on the same night you can get a discount on the second show by presenting your ticket for the first show at the box office.
