DEAR READERI’m delighted to welcome in 2015 by announcing the launch of the new SERVOTOUGH MIniLaser TDL analyzer: our brand new cross-stack laser monitor that redefines the look, functionality and performance of TDL gas analysis.

Thanks to an extensive development program by our R&D and manufacturing team, the future of gas analysis just got smaller. The MiniLaser’s ultra-compact design makes the bulky, cumbersome form of traditional cross-stack monitors a thing of the past. This enables easy installation by just one person, while still delivering a fast, accurate measurement. We’re proud to be unveiling this product to our customers, so this special edition of ES includes an exclusive preview on page four.

In addition to the MiniLaser, we have plenty in store for 2015. We’ve launched a new range of spare parts kits for all our analyzers and are starting up fresh local for local customer initiatives in your region.

We have lots to talk about, but we only earn the right to speak if we’re listening properly. It’s important we respond to the suggestions or frustrations you have about your applications or the products and services you find in the industry. Servomex will continue to improve if we take the time to listen, understand and reflect, and then work to develop more effective responses to your needs.

This input is vital and shapes the products and services we supply. For instance, our brand new Spares Base Packs have been designed to take the uncertainty out of which spares to keep in stock, by recommending key parts on an individual analyzer basis.

So while we have plenty to talk about, it’s still the customer’s voice that matters most. This year we will be listening harder than ever.

GLOBAL NEWS UPDATE

P4 ES

Servomex is pleased to announce the SERVOTOUGH MiniLaser Ammonia and SERVOTOUGH MiniLaser Oxy: the world’s smallest cross-stack Tunable Diode Laser (TDL) gas analyzers, specifically optimized for NH3 and O2 measurement, respectively.

Servomex Group President, Chuck Hurley said: “The SERVOTOUGH MiniLaser platform is a groundbreaking development in TDL technology and the direct result of Servomex’s continued investment in R&D to meet the ongoing requirements of our customers. It is a challenge to traditional thinking across the whole industry, both in terms of design and application. The MiniLaser is the next big thing in gas analysis.”

Dr Stephen Firth, Photometric Product Manager said: “Based around Servomex’s revolutionary new MiniLaser platform developed at our UK Technical Center, the MiniLaser Ammonia and Oxy analyzers are a remarkable ninety percent smaller and eighty percent lighter than many other comparable TDL analyzers. The MiniLaser’s revolutionary compact size and dramatically reduced footprint offers unparalleled installation flexibility and a host of cost and performance benefits.”

The benefits of the new MiniLaser are immediate. Instead of the time-intensive installation associated with traditional, bulky TDL analyzers, they can be installed quickly by just one person. Simple installation is supported by a new built-in display, which negates the need for using a laptop for configuration and diagnostics. Improved advanced optical performance achieves a wider acceptance angle.

To ensure precision alignment from the outset, Servomex has also included a new mounting assembly for multi-direction adjustment. When combined with the new, quick-release mechanism, fast and accurate reinstallation - without the need for re-alignment - is achieved every time. The MiniLaser also includes Servomex’s new purge design, which reduces nitrogen (N2) and air purge costs

by an impressive ninety percent per annum; a significant return on investment when calculating lifetime operational costs.

The MiniLaser Ammonia and MiniLaser Oxy are optimized for the fast, accurate and responsive measurement of ammonia and oxygen in hot or hazardous conditions. This means the MiniLaser Ammonia is particularly suitable for ammonia slippage applications on coal-fired power plants, while the MiniLaser Oxy is highly effective in combustion and process control applications.

The MiniLaser analyzers expand the SERVOTOUGH Laser range of TDL analyzers, providing the same industry-leading performance delivered by the LaserSP, LaserCompact and LaserExact monitors.

The SERVOTOUGH SpectraExact 2500 and SpectraScan

2400 (1) monitor the feed gas quality for high carbon

monoxide (CO) and to maintain a consistent feed to the

cracking unit, while the SpectraExact (2) monitors the

feed treating for carbon dioxide (CO2) removal. After the

recycled ethane has been blended with the treated feed, the

SpectraScan (3) maintains a consistent feed to the cracking

unit. The SpectraScan (4) and H2scan (5) maintain constant

fire and heating rates of the steam boiler and cracking unit,

with a real time, low maintenance BTU analysis, especially

when hydrogen (H2) and methane (CH4) rich tail gases are

recycled to the burners. Rapid, real time analysis of the feed

gas (3) and heating rate (5) is vital to prevent under- or

over-cracking, establish the conditions for maximum cracking

efficiency and the longest interval between de-coking cycles.Optimized and safe combustion and reduced fuel consumption

is achieved by both detailed fuel analysis and rapid flue gas

analysis. The SERVOTOUGH FluegasExact 2700 (6) and (8)

offers analysis of both oxygen (O2) and combustibles (COe),

while the SERVOTOUGH LaserSP 2900 (7) offers an average

path analysis across the cracker unit. This delivers a fast and

highly accurate analysis (<4s) of O2 and CO, as well as the

added safety feature of measuring CH4 breakthrough. Continuous Emissions Monitoring Systems (CEMS) utilizing

the SERVOPRO 4900 (9)(10)(11)(12) and Servomex sample

systems are used to measure the stack emissions for legislative

requirements of O2, CO, NOx and SOx. The 4900 can also be

installed either side of a Selective Catalytic Reduction Unit to

monitor the SCR’s efficiency in reducing NOx emissions, while

the LaserSP (13) monitors the NH3 level, allowed to “slip”

through the catalysis during the NOx reduction reaction.

On the outlet of the cracker unit a transfer line exchanger

(TLE) rapidly cools the cracked gas to preserve the gas

composition: the SpectraScan and H2scan (14) monitor

the gas quality after the cracking unit, ensuring the highest

possible ethylene yield and to prevent under- or over-

cracking. During the decoke cycle a SpectraScan (14) with

added CO2 channel can also be utilised to monitor CO2 levels,

as well as ensure the shortest decoking cycle with real time

analysis, or a separate SpectraExact (15) can be utilised for

this measurement.

APPLICATIONFOCUSEthylene Production

The production of ethylene is one of the most complex hydrocarbon processing applications, consisting of three distinct areas of production – the cracking of the feed gas using a furnace, the cleaning and cooling of the cracked gas, and the fractionation and re-hydrogenation of the gas stream into ethylene and by-products including propylene, propane, olefins and gasoline product.

SYSTEMS

ASK THE EXPERTAndrea Tancredi, System Engineering Manager for Europe and Africa, talks about the development of Intuitive Gas Software, part of Servomex’s pioneering Multigas Monitoring System (mms).

Q. What is Servomex’s MMS?

A. Servomex is the only company in the world to combine expertise in manufacturing analytical equipment alongside system integration. Our MMS integrates world leading analytical equipment to effectively monitor impurities in bulk gases such as H2, N2, Ar and He, as well as medical, beverage and food grade gases. Our experienced system design and integration team ensures the MMS captures the full potential of each analyzer; it also manages data collection, data storage and alarm notification, as well as providing a facility for remote operation and diagnostics via an Ethernet connection. In short, it facilitates Centralized Quality Control (CQC) for bulk and/or process gas distribution systems.

Q. Why has Servomex introduced the Intuitive Gas Software (IGS)?

A. The new software has been developed in response to customer requirements. Until last year, Servomex sourced and implemented third party software, which was expensive to both licence and customize. We looked at developing our own software and started with single application oxygen sensing for medical use. Further development for multigas operations has introduced features that were previously unavailable to customers.

Q. What are the key features?

A. IGS is user-friendly Windows-based software with three main views navigated via a clear ‘tab’ system, from which customers can select the application, visualize the measurements and monitor the entire system status. The data is acquired and stored in the computer hard disk and an external back up memory. Highly customizable according to the

analyzers in use and their applications, it offers unprecedented functionality, including multiple analyzer and multigas monitoring, as well as VPN remote support for prompt assistance. Customers are able to create multiple users with varying permission levels to ensure optimum overall management and control of their systems.

Q. What does the new IGS mean for customers?

A. IGS is customizable to meet the individual needs of customers. Ultimately, since IGS is developed by Servomex for Servomex analyzers, customers are using the very best product for their systems. Should issues arise, customers can rely on Servomex’s world-class direct support - available with remote VPN access - for fast resolution.

Q. How will it affect the performance of Servomex analyzers?

A. Since the IGS software enables real-time monitoring, analyzer performance is constantly under review as part of the MMS. Any issues are flagged in real time

allowing engineers to resolve them immediately, ensuring optimum performance at all times.

Q. Who is the MMS with IGS available to?

A. Customers implementing new analyzers will automatically benefit from the new integration format as standard. Existing customers with incumbent management and software systems can opt to replace it with the fully integrated Servomex version – contact Servomex for a consultation using the details below.

The key features are: • Trend and graphs available on selectable timeframe, i.e. hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, etc.

• Analysis certificates available in several formats, .xls, .pdf, .doc

• Certificates of past analysis can be generated at any moment

• VPN remote support available for prompt assistance

• Software can handle and manage multiple applications at the same time

• Summary table with all current readings, warning and alarms

• Multiple operators login

• Certificates are stored in a secure archive

• User friendly online help.

EXPERT PAPER

The latest generation of laboratory moisture analyzers, based on a technique known as Advanced-TDL, are able to operate for a period of years in non-ideal environments without the need for re-calibration. They can yield moisture measurements with ppb sensitivity in a wide variety of single and multi-component gas mixtures. In common with all TDL techniques, high performance measurements are enabled by virtue of the ultra narrow diode laser bandwidth, which in turn enables selection of a single fine- structure water absorption line. The Advanced-TDL technique further utilizes additional information buried within the

shape of the water IR absorption line which, after correction for absolute pressure, is subtly dependent on the chemical composition of the (host) gas or gas matrix under investigation.

Armed with this additional data, Advanced-TDL analyzers are able to measure moisture levels across a wide variety of background gases without the need for re-calibration. The analyzers remain highly tolerant to “real world” environmental effects such as temperature, pressure, vibration, and contamination of the optical surfaces.

To better understand this unique feature of Advanced-TDL we can look a little closer at how it determines the shape factor and area under the H2O absorption line to improve the stability and sensitivity of the moisture measurement. Absorption line-shape factors are analogous to the unique “idents” used by air traffic controllers to mark an individual aircraft on their sometimes crowded monitoring screens. Key information on the composition of the background gas or mixture is derived by determining the shape factor of the absorption line. The moisture concentration is derived by measuring the area under the absorption line.

FIGURE 1 shows a (fine structure) water line in the 1854 nm region of the IR spectrum. Note the characteristic “valley, hill, valley” shape of this line. This comes about through the second harmonic detection technique also utilized in Advanced-TDL analyzers.

The ident triangle is created by joining the turning points of this spectral absorption curve. The area of this triangle relates to the moisture concentration. Lower concentrations result in a smaller triangle. Conversely higher concentrations yield a

larger triangle. Yet in all cases (for a constant background gas) the height-to-base ratio remains the same (i.e. a continuous set of similar triangles). The ratio of the base to the peak of this triangle yields the background gas ident shape factor.

NEWDF-745 SGMAX

Achieving accurate and repeatable low-level moisture analysis in the specialty gas industry while minimizing analysis instrument maintenance is a challenge many laboratory analysis equipment suppliers have tried to meet over the years with a number of different technologies. It is now clear that Tunable Diode Laser Spectroscopy (TDL) has emerged as the clear technology leader, however, this general technique is not standing still. Instruments utilizing various versions of this technique are now available on the market.

ANALYZERS BY INDUSTRY

POWERED BY

FIGURE 2 compares the water absorption lines and their associated triangle idents over a range of concentrations in both helium and argon backgrounds. This clearly illustrates the constant shape of the triangle

ident, which fingerprints the background gas composition. In the case of gas mixtures, the resultant triangle ident shape factor is simply comprised of the weighted average shape of all the components.

The Servomex DF-745 SGMax Advanced-TDL analyzers further incorporate a robust Herriott gas cell, which is virtually immune from mechanical disturbances in the field. Furthermore, the low signal-to-noise ratio arising from the Advanced-TDL technique requires only a short optical path length enabling it to tolerate a significant degree of “real world” contamination of the optical surfaces with no effect on measurement accuracy or noise.

Unlike earlier TDL techniques, such as Cavity Ring-Down Spectroscopy (CRDS), the Advanced-TDL technique continuously

measures the target gas directly. CRDS discontinuously monitors the moisture concentration through changes in the rate of decay of light within a highly reflective optical cavity. The CRDS technique is therefore unable to “ident” the nature of the sample gas as it cannot distinguish between the gas type and degraded optical transmission within its measurement cell. Furthermore CRDS technique requires very long path multi- kilometer absorption cell lengths involving up to 100,000 reflections from each cell mirror surface, which requires of >99.999% internal mirror reflectivity to maintain a repeatable low noise moisture measurement.

FIGURE 2Comparison of Moisture Measurements in He and N2 Backgrounds

A further feature of Advanced-TDL analyzers is the deployment of an internal reference cell consisting of a sealed moisture ampoule. A portion of the laser light is redirected through this cell and is used to lock laser wavelength onto the exact moisture line of interest. Figure 3 shows an example of both the sample and reference absorption lines from the display of the Servomex DF-745 SGMax analyzer. This displays (in blue) the real-time reference cell spectral line and

(in yellow) the real time water absorption line from the sample under investigation. The actual display of the reference and sample spectrums allows even a novice user to confirm at a glance, the health and relative accuracy of the system performance. Infrared spectroscopy is widely accepted as a proven technology for the accurate, repeatable, and reliable method for gas analysis. The technology is used in many industries for quality control, direct process measurement, life safety applications and other applications requiring direct simultaneous analysis of various gases. Over the past 15 years Servomex has continually improved the DF-700 series moisture analyzers to allow for trace and ultra trace detection of moisture in a number of process gas streams. The DF-745 SGMax is specifically designed to support the specialty gas industry by allowing the measurement of moisture in complex gas blending scenarios. By allowing the cylinder fill plant to mix complex gas mixtures, easily switch background gas streams and limit field maintenance, the DF-745 SGMax establishes itself as the analyzer of choice for the specialty gas industry.
