What is Teaching Handwring, Reading and Spelling

Skills (THRASS)?

THRASSisaresourceweuseintheElementarySchoolto

supportaninquirybasedapproachtolearningaboutlanguage.

Itisbaseduponteachingphonologicalawarenessbasedupon

whatislinguiscallycorrect,inapedagogicalapproachwhich

alignswithourinquiry. Itprovidesthechildwithakeytoun

lockingunfamiliarlanguage.Or,touseanErmaAnderson

metaphor,itisakintoprovidingthelearnerwithamap,rath

thanadiscretesetofdirecons. Thechartidenfiesthe44

soundsinthealphabet.

How is this different from teaching a tradional phoni

program?

Tradionalphonicsfocusedonteachingleersounds.For

exampleAa=ant,Bb=ball.Itthensupplementedthese26

sounds,withabankofsightwords,whichdidntnecessarily

intothese.Thisis,unfortunately,anoversimplisc

methodology,asthereareonly26soundsinthealphabetanyet44soundsinpracce.

Aphonographicapproach(whichTHRASSulizes)startsfrom

speechsounds(auditory)tospellingchoices(visual). Usingt

method,theteacherdoesnotrelyonabankofsightwords,a

everywordcanbesoundedoutandspellingpaernslogicall

explained.So,forexample,was,doesnotstaywozinachi

mind,asitcanbelogicallyinvesgated.

Why is this approach superior to a tradional phonics

one?

Skillsandstrategiesforlearninghowtospellarecricaltot

spellingprocess. Rotememorizaonofwordsoutofcontext

doesnotprovidethelearnerwithanyskillstoabletospellne

wordstheyencounter. JustlikeinMathemacs,itisnotjust

thecorrectanswerwhichisimportant,butalsotheworking

memoryandunderstandingofhowtoachievethecorrect

answer,whichisvitaltothecogniveprocess(deeper

understanding)forfuturelearning.

Knowingthe44soundsofEnglishandthevariousspelling

choicesthatrepresentthesesoundsenablesthelearnerto

understandorthography(thespellingsystemofourlanguage

andnotbeconfusedbyrestrictedphonicpaerns.Forexam

theleercdoesnotjustrepresentthesoundatthebeginn

ofcat.Itcanrepresentsincity,cent,Cindyetc.Thesoundnotjustrepresentedbytheleerfbutcouldbephasin

photoandtelephone.Theleerydoesnotjustrepresentth

soundatthebeginningofyawn,butmorecommonlyit

representsthesoundattheendofcityandponyorthesoun

inmy,flyandby.Ourschooliscommiedtoexplicit,handso

phonicsteaching.Welookatphonicspaernswithinawhole

wordapproach.Thatis,ifweareteachingthewordfishwe

focusonallthesoundsnotjustone.

The photographer will be on campus next week, 21-24 October, forthe Middle School Photo Shoot. ES Students who were not able to havetheir photo taken last September and those who wish to have retakes

done may do so during this week.

For NEW STUDENTS who came in after the September photo shoot, anorder sheet will be sent home with your child this Friday, 17th

October, with instructions on how youmay order your childs photo. There willbe no retakes for class photos. All photoorders will be delivered on 13 December

2013.

Parents are welcome to be with theirchild during the photo shoot.
