DESCRIPTION
The aerospace industry is traditionally a pioneer in using advanced materials as well as advanced simulation owing to the complex nature of applications. Composites are almost indispensable in today’s high-performance space structures, such as launchers or satellites. General finite element simulation tools do not typically cover certain tasks in the design process of composite structures very well, such as the selection of the material system, choice of structural concept (stiffened, solid, sandwich) and preliminary lay-up design. ESAComp software, which is available through the Altair Partner Alliance, addresses those tasks in particular. In a joint effort between Altair and Componeering, the ESAComp-HyperWorks composites post-processing interface was developed to meet the needs of client RUAG Space, by allowing the user to apply advanced failure criteria to its structure using ESAComp and visualize the failure results’ contours in HyperView or through the thickness plots in ESAComp. The interface efficiently uses HyperMesh Desktop’s matrix browser technology for data exchange. With the bi-directional interface ESAComp can now easily be integrated in the composite design process in HyperWorks both for materials and layup import during the pre-processing and failure evaluation in the post-processing. The presentation illustrates this integration, and its benefits, for parts of the Solar-Orbiter, a mission dedicated to solar and heliospheric physics.TRANSCRIPT
