The first day of the conference was

introduced by Professor Dietmar Otte from

the Accident Research Unit at Hannover

Medical School, followed by the president of

the Hannover Medical School, Professor

Dieter Bitter-Suermann.

The second ESAR congress was attended

by 107 participants at the first day of the

international conference. The nineteen

lectures were presented by speakers from

eight different countries from three distinctcontinents, Europe, North America and Asia.

Professor Dr. Christian Krettek and Professor Dr.

Hans Zwipp at the 2nd

ESAR congress.

As a host nation known from the FIFA World

Cup 2006, German speakers were

responsible for thirteen lectures at day one

of the conference. Speakers from Finland,

Sweden, the Netherlands from Europe, from

Japan and from the United States gave

substantial and valuable further information

regarding their local accident research and

associated injury prevention programmes.

One of the highlights of the first conference

day was the presentation of the secretary of

the German Federal Ministry of Transport,

Building and Urban Affairs, Mr. State

secretary J. Hennerkes, who came in on

transit from a national governmentaltransport conference in Oldenburg on his

way back to Berlin. He reiterated the target

of the European Union to halve the number

of persons killed annually in road traffic

accidents from the year 2000 to 2010 due to

optimized countermeasures against injuries

and sustained strategies for road traffic

accident prevention.

What to expect for Saturday? We are

about to hear a condensed package of

information in the early morning poster

session with twelve 5min poster

presentations followed by fourteen lectures .
