The temperatures are falling, and the leaves are turning. I can’t count how many people have told me that this is their favorite time of year. Believe me, I totally get it. Take advantage of this wonderful weather and do something fun this weekend. With the game on tonight, there is no excuse to waste your Saturday on the couch. Go on an adventure (pg. 8) or test your skills in the kitchen (pg. 10). If you really just want a

relaxing weekend, I totally understand. You can spend it finding out all about the new gaming systems that are about to hit the shelves — just in time for the holidays (pg. 9). Or, of course, take some advice from our resident couch potato and check out the new blockbusters (pg. 11). Whatever it is you choose to do this weekend, open the windows and enjoy that chilly Oklahoma air. It really is one of a kind.

As a freshman, it was this time of the year that made me like coffee. Long nights studying for tests or writing papers began to overwhelm me, and this whole college thing stopped being as fun as it appeared at the beginning. You have started calculating potential grades and know how these papers and tests will impact your overall grade. The future looks ominous, and this clearly doesn’t help your stress level. I have been in this situation often, and my advice to you is … chill out. Stress is not going to help you improve your grades; in fact, it is more likely than not going to make the quality of your work go down. I know this is easier said than done, but here are some hints to help get your attitude to where it needs to be.

Change your study spot: There are more places to study than the library or your dorm room. Go for a change of scenery, and explore some of the great spots that can be found around campus. Maybe try one of the coffee shops off campus, like Gray Owl Coffee (the caffeine can’t hurt), or even see if the Great Reading Room is right for your study habits. Keep exploring, and you will be sure to find the spot for you.

Catch up on sleep: I know you have five papers, six tests and a meeting next week, but sleep is pretty important. If you are not taking care of yourself, you will have some problems. Put everything down, and get at least one good night of sleep. Everyone likes to brag about the fact that they “only got four hours of sleep last night.” Despite what these people think, lack of sleep is not cool. Take a break so you feel good the next day. Happy you = happy papers.

Prioritize: We all have a lot going on, and despite what your professors might tell you, not everything you do in their class is important. Look at how much each assignment is worth and prioritize everything you do. Maybe you could skip a meeting or even a small assignment. If it is not going to have a major impact on your grade, relax and just focus on something else. (This is not me saying don’t do it. Maybe just don’t put as much effort into it.)

niversity Sing is a tradition here at the OU that has grown through the years to a production larger and more over-the-top than anyone in its first years

would have imagined. Throughout Panhellenic Association recruitment, any dancer and singer was told he or she needed to audition for University Sing. Once recruitment was finally over, auditions were right around the corner. Little did these recruits know that they would be spending six hours a week practicing with a group of fraternity boys that would rather be anywhere else. Don’t worry, boys, we really do understand. If these aspiring performers have made it this far, they have probably put in more hours than you know and have even caught themselves randomly humming some of the songs in their shows. It’s OK.

Older members have all been there. The week leading up to the final performances is crucial. Performers will have time to run through their shows on the stage, and directors are probably screaming at someone for not remembering their formations. This year’s show is scheduled for Nov. 14-16, and if you don’t have tickets already, you might be stuck. We hate to break it to you, but they sold out in less than 30

minutes. Now your only hope for getting in to see this year’s group of freshmen sing and dance is by blowing up your Facebook feed, begging your friends to sell you their extras. If you are lucky enough to get into Holmberg Hall, you’ll have the pleasure of watching seven Broadway-style shows based on this year’s theme, Walk of Fame — or shows “based on

cultural icons immortalized by Hollywood’s very own Walk of Fame,” as the Campus Activities Council describes it. Sit, back, relax and enjoy the shows.

You can hear the singing echo through the halls of the fraternity and sorority houses. As show time gets closer, more and more freshmen in the show skip their intro lecture classes while the directors stop sleeping at all. It must be getting close to Dad’s Weekend because these University Sing competitors are putting on their game faces.

Glow sticks and pianos and rapping, oh my! Union Programming Board’s first Sooner’s Got Talent event

is a campus-wide talent show, with acts selected by audition. We caught up with a few of the performers

who will be featured in tomorrow’s show in Oklahoma Memorial Union’s Meacham Auditorium.

Ryan Lewis and Michele ArchamboCall them the acoustic Dynamic Duo — this pair is ready to rock. Archambo, a University College freshman, and Lewis, a marketing sophomore, will be performing Imagine Dragon’s “Radioactive.”

Lewis and Archambo met while attending Metro Christian Academy in Tulsa.

“We were on the praise and worship team together,” Lewis said.

“We did musicals and stuff,” Archambo said. “Our favorite was probably ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.’ He was the lead, and I was the other lead.”

That history together allowed the pair to exercise some spontaneity when it came to the audition.

“Five minutes before I auditioned, I found out I was going to audition,” Archambo said. “I’m not a spontaneous person, which is weird. [Lewis] told me to!”

“I said if she’d do it, I’d do it,” Lewis said.Despite their performing experience, Lewis and

Archambo have a humble approach to the show.“I’m mostly looking forward to seeing what’s

happening with the other groups,” Archambo said. “But it’ll be fun to perform and to have an audience, to see how they react.”

Khoi Trinh and Garrison LeRockTwo freshmen are turning a shared passion into a potential victory. Musicians Trinh and LeRock met on the first floor of Couch Center while waiting to take their turns at the piano.

“I have a friend on my floor, and we were going to play some music downstairs,” Trinh said. “When we got downstairs, we met [LeRock].”

“I think I was already playing,” LeRock said. “I said, ‘I can leave for you guys,’ and [Trinh] and I started talking, and we said we should jam sometime.”

The duo said they didn’t audition knowing exactly what they would put in their piano medley at the show.

“I think Stairway [to Heaven] is going pretty well. I think that’d be a good one, and the song from Zelda should be in there,” LeRock said.

Trinh’s involvement with UPB got the pair to audition, he said.

“I’ve never played in any big shows, at all,” Trinh said. “I got [LeRock] to tag along to the audition.”

“I didn’t even know what UPB was. I knew he was in it, and he said, ‘Hey, they’re doing a talent show; we should enter,’ and I was like, ‘Right on,” LeRock said.

Danny Nguyen, Bliss Brown and Patrick CurryA chance meeting at a Tulsa community theater transformed into this trio’s Sooner’s Got Talent act. Nguyen, Brown and Curry will light up the auditorium with their glowsticking act, in which they will dance with stringed glow sticks.

“Danny taught me and Patrick how to [glowstick],” Brown, human relations junior, said. “We were all part of a group called Youth Onstage, and we were in Cinderella. We were the Fairy Godmother’s magic, and that’s basically why we learned.”

Philosophy senior Nguyen said he learned the skill in high school after seeing it at a high school dance.

“[My favorite thing] is the absolute freedom you have to pull any moves together and being able to improvise on the fly,” he said.

The joy the three get from their talent will be evident on stage, Nguyen said.

“I’m most excited about getting back in the groove,” he said. “Stringing again has been a good feeling for me.”

GOTJustin WisenerThis management information systems and accounting senior has something to prove.

Wisener said he auditioned for Sooner’s Got Talent to provide a new outlet for his singing.

“I performed in choirs my first two years here, and then my class schedule just got too difficult, and I didn’t have time for it,” he said. “I was really missing it, so I auditioned for a group this semester, but I didn’t make it in because they had too many people singing my voice part already, so I just really wanted an opportunity to perform, and this gave me that.”

Wisener said he hopes to have a big cheering section.

“Hopefully, a lot of people from my fraternity and just a lot of my friends [will be there],” he said.

Though this is the competition’s first year, Wisener said he thinks the event will expand.

“I just hope people aren’t afraid to showcase their talents or don’t think that they have a talent,” he said. “Everybody has a talent. You have a talent. You just have to practice and work on it.”

Brien DawnThis freshman from Bartlesville, Okla.’s future is so bright that he ought to wear shades. Dawn will be rapping tomorrow night, covering popular songs like “Can’t Hold Us” with original lyrics.

Though this is Dawn’s first year at OU, he’s no stranger to the stage.

“About a month ago, I auditioned for the Oklahoma Creativity Festival, their talent show,” he said. “That was such a fun experience, and after that, I thought, ‘Why not do Sooner’s Got Talent?’”

The Sooner Robotics team member said the biggest draw beyond getting to perform is the location of the show.

“[Meacham Auditorium] is the first place I performed at, so it’s got that freshman attachment for me,” Dawn said. “That’s home when it comes to performing in Norman.”

Dawn said his motivation to win was greater than wanting a scholarship.

“I’ve been performing for years, so I’m here to continue a tradition,” he said.

There are a few mountain ranges in Oklahoma, and most are quite friendly to hikers and non-hikers alike. Near Lawton, a bit less than two hours from Norman, are the Wichita Mountains and the National Wildlife Refuge. It’s a short drive to the top of Mount Scott, and nearby are buffalo and prairie dogs. The Arbuckle Mountains, along with Turner Falls, in Davis, Okla., are a bit closer and a unique experience for camping. The Glass Mountains are another option, where one can find mesas and buttes. This range is about two and a half hours northwest of Norman in Major County. Don’t forget to take lunch and water along for the adventure.

Hiking:

Cold weather is coming, but it’s not here yet. Now is the time to take advantage of outdoor activities before the sunshine wanes and the chill sets in. While Oklahoma may seem flat and boring to the uneducated outsider, there are plenty of excellent open-air adventures just begging to be explored.

There’s bound to be at least one day this weekend warm enough to relax outside. Take that chance to hang out in a park or a nice spot on campus, and have a picnic with friends or a significant other. Pack some nice cheeses, fruit or sandwiches and a blanket and you’re set. Just remember there is no alcohol allowed in public parks, so this would not be the opportune moment to woo a potential date with champagne or wine, no matter how romantic that sounds. Or if you’re more of a loner, take a novel with you, or whatever reading you’ve been putting off for classes and need to catch up on.

Picnic:

OKC’s zoo is only about 30 minutes from Norman, and at $8, it is a relatively inexpensive treat. Coming up soon is Nov. 27, which is a free day at the zoo, according to their website, along with every Monday in December, January and February. The zoo is full of a good variety of animals in nice, natural habitats. From lions and tigers to gorillas and rhinos — there is something for every animal lover.

The Zoo:The duck pond is the perfect, convenient way to get some outdoor experiences near campus. Take that stale bread that’s been sitting in the refrigerator for months, tear it into little pieces and go crazy. One thing to be wary of is the goose squad. While the ducks are nice and cute, geese can be monsters. They’ll chase after you in a gang just for the taste of whatever you’ve got on you. And they’re pretty loud honkers. Bonus: The duck pond parking lot is usually pretty easy to find spaces, so parking won’t be as hectic as the rest of campus.

ComingThe next generation of video game consoles is beginning this month, but you might want to wait before you jump on the bandwagon.

Shiny, sleek and new — words to describe the defi nition of an appealing device in the modern age. Our newest electronic toys coming in a few weeks are the Xbox One and PlayStation 4. They are shiny, sleek and new, but should you invest a few hundred dollars in one of these machines this month? On Nov. 15, the PlayStation 4 will be launching for $399, and on Nov. 22, the Xbox One will launch for $499. I’ll be buying an Xbox One on its launch day, but only because I need one to review video games. If I didn’t need the system for work, I honestly wouldn’t be purchasing one just yet for a number of reasons. First, consider the games you already have — or don’t have yet. I already have a perfectly functioning Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Although I’ve kept up with a number of the biggest releases on both systems, I can confi dently say I have a backlog of games that would last me at least a few years. That’s not even including all the games I’ve purchased from Steam sales. Needless to say, I’m set on games for both platforms. Then, look at the games coming to the new console generation. Sure, Ubisoft’s “Watch Dogs” looks promising, and it was my most anticipated launch title, but it was delayed to next spring. So what

does that leave us with? Unfortunately, not much. All the major titles Sony and Microsoft

are pushing — “Infamous: Second Son,” “Titanfall,” and “Destiny” — won’t be coming until next spring at the earliest. Granted there are some interesting games launching with the consoles such as “Dead Rising 3” for the Xbox One and “Killzone: Shadow Fall” for

the PS4, but do each of those warrant a console purchase? Many of the top-tier games that have been and will be released this winter — “Call of Duty: Ghosts,” “Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag” and “Battlefi eld 4” — will also be released on the Xbox 360 and PS3. Before you start your “well, won’t the new generations version be better?” argument, many of the current generation top-tier games like “Call of Duty:

Ghosts” can be upgraded at a later time to their next-generation siblings for about a $10 fee. So, get your fi x now and when the time is right, upgrade. If you’re really worried about the differences, then take the leap and invest in one — or both — of the new consoles. You’ll be the popular kid at the table for sure – I’ve already had a few friends ask if they can stop by my place to try out the newest Xbox. Buying either of these machines at launch will keep you in the know when it comes to console conversations, but it will defi nitely cost you. We’re fi nally getting into the holiday season, so are you really ready to throw down a few hundred dollars on yourself ? Though the PS4 and Xbox One start at $399 and $499 respectively, those price tags don’t include the initial game you’ll want to buy or any extra controllers or accessories. Remember, these consoles will not allow you to play any games from the past generations, so you’ll need to be ready to invest in a game or two at launch. In addition to the games, if you plan on playing online, unlike its predecessor, the PS4 requires

a PlayStation Plus subscription for online access. Likewise, the Xbox One still requires an Xbox Live subscription for online play. Really, it’s best to wait to pick up one of these new consoles. Wait for that one game that you must have and then invest. Don’t waste hundreds of dollars to settle on a game you aren’t thrilled to play. Although Microsoft and Sony are keen to get started on this next generation, be patient and realize that this current generation of consoles still has a lot of fi ght in them. of consoles still has a lot of fi ght in them.

Evin Morrison I Photo The sunny days of summer are long gone, and your favorite summer treats are no longer in season. But with the cooler temperatures come beautiful fall foliage and seasonal treats you can enjoy any day.

Pumpkin Everything CakeIngredients:

29 ounce can pumpkin puree12 ounce evaporated milk1 cup sugar3 eggs2 teaspoons cinnamon1 teaspoon ginger1/2 teaspoon cloves1/2 teaspoon nutmeg1 cup melted butter1 box of yellow cake mix 1/2 cup chopped nuts (optional)1/2 cup cinamon/sugar mixtureDirections

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. While the oven heats up, whip out that baking pan of yours and give it a good spray down with cooking spray.

Mix the pumpkin, milk, sugar, eggs and spices in a bowl until fully combined.

Pour the mix into the pan. Layer the nuts on top of the pumpkin. Shake the cake mix into an even layer on top, then drizzle the melted butter over everything. Sprinkle with cinnamon sugar and bake for 45 minutes (or until edges turn golden brown).

After letting it cool down — unless your taste buds happens to be immune to pain associated with burning hot food — serve with ice cream, whipped cream or a glass of milk.

I’m trying to book Thanksgiving tickets home, and I want

my significant other to come with me. Is that too much to

ask?

Hell. To. The. Yes. You are not the only one with a family. Honestly, unless you are married (which I hope you aren’t), there is no reason to even ask. I don’t care if you have been together for three years or two months, making him miss out on grandma’s stuffing and his mom’s pumpkin pie is just mean. It is really, really mean. Would you skip stuffing your face with your family to go see his? Be honest. I wouldn’t, my dad’s smoked turkey recipe is WAY too delicious to miss. I promise you can survive five days without seeing your “other half.” *barf* Go have fun with your family, and let him have fun with his. It’s the right thing to do. If it seems unbearable, that’s why they invented Snapchat.

I’m trying to book Thanksgiving tickets home and I want

my significant other to come with me. Is that too much to

ask?

Let’s really think about this. Are you sure it is time for “Meet the Parents?” I am sure your lover is worthy of meeting your ‘rents, but I am more worried about how long your relationship will last after that fateful encounter.

Take a test. On the scale of one to ten, how cray-cray is your family (include the extended fam that will be joining you around the turkey)? If you score above a six, which you probably did unless you are delusional or lying, then for the sake of having someone in your bed when you get back from break, don’t extend an invitation. That is unless you are trying to get rid of a hanger-on.

Maybe you have been dating for a long time, and holidays have already been spent with the other’s family. If so, go for it, but report back with the juicy details from that romp in your childhood bedroom.

I’m trying to book Thanksgiving tickets home and I want

my significant other to come with me. Is that too much to

ask?

Are you ******* kidding me? Did you get her pregnant or something? What did you smoke last night that made you think it would be a good idea to take this girl home?

Listen, I know she’s lured you into a sense of complacency with her wiles and charms, but don’t throw your life away on this two-bit strumpet. This is college, and you’re surrounded by girls whose yoga “pants” are just as stretchy and whose blonde hair is equally fake and shiny. You brought it on yourself when you let her spend the night — if you had kicked her out, she’d know how things stand. You ain’t about that life. Next time she calls, tell her you can’t meet up tonight — you’re going out with Becky. She’ll get the idea.

And if your parents give you a hard time, bring home that not-so-classy broad from down the street.

Natalie Portman is back as his astrophysicist girlfriend (?) whose main purpose, if the fi rst fi lm is anything to judge by, is to stand around uselessly and give something for Thor to be sad about if he loses it. Also, he has to team up with his brother/antagonist Loki because these new bad guys are just the worst. Temper expectations. In theaters tomorrow

‘About Time’So you want a rom-com. I can’t say that I understand you, but then again, I also can’t understand why I tear up at the trailer for “About Time.” The fi lm centers around a lovable British ginger who fi nds out he can time travel. And he uses this newfound ability to (what else?) try to get with Rachel McAdams. Probably going to be bland, but if you’re into time travel or lanky red-haired men — I know a lot of

you are — then it’ll serve its purpose. In theaters tomorrow

‘Ender’s Game’

It’s based on a sci-fi novel about kids that have to fi ght aliens. Not with their fi sts or anything, but in a more strategic sense. Harrison Ford and Ben Kingsley co-star as grizzled frumps to Asa Butterfi eld’s titular Ender. The precocious Butterfi eld has to prove that he’s the kid to save the human race. It actually sounds hilarious when you write it down, but the book makes sense, I promise. No idea about the movie. Hoping for the best.In theaters now

‘ArtPop’If anything, Lady Gaga is defi ning her genre by entitling her album “ARTPOP” (not to be confused by the other “art pop” genre, which is very different). As an artist, she is constantly pushing boundaries and trying to make profound statements (see Gaga naked art video from back in August).Based on the two singles “Applause” and “Do What U Want,” I don’t imagine Gaga will let her audience down by straying too far from the formulaic sound she has developed.
