The Esco Group has achieved record sales growth in 2013 to date. Our strategic investments in people, products and manufacturing capabilities are paying off. The sales of new products is growing at extremely rapid pace, although core products continue to grow as well. Given the generally flat market environment, this is an outstanding achievement and I would like to acknowledge the efforts of all stakeholders especially our people which have made this possible.

The highlights of the first half of 2013 include a slew of new products and services from new biosafety cabinets, ULT freezers, laboratory refrigerators and freezers, benchtop laboratory freeze dryers, to novel software solutions. As we were going to print many of these new products and services were being unveiled internally to our global sales organization and key distribution partners for the first time. The future of Esco includes the selling and delivery of some novel solution concepts beginning from the cold storage and IVF areas. This will require our global sales and service organizations along with distribution partners to acquire and develop some additional skill sets. We expect the results to be fulfilling for all stakeholders, including creating new growth opportunities within the group for our team members to actualize themselves.

Other highlights of the first half of 2013 include the continued expansion of our sales, service and marketing footprint globally in order to better support our distribution partners. New positions have been created and are being filled in the US, Europe, Middle East, India, Southeast Asia and China.

Infertility’s Impact on Society and the Role of Esco MedicalEarlier this year, the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) published new guidelines stating who should have access to in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment on the National Health Services (NHS) in England and Wales.

IVF is a form of assisted reproductive technology (ART) used primarily to treat infertility. The process involves removing eggs from the woman’s ovaries and letting sperm fertilize them in a fluid medium in a laboratory. The fertilized egg is then transferred to the patient’s uterus which will then implant itself in the lining of the womb resulting to pregnancy.

According to the new guidelines, IVF should be offered after two years of failed attempts (not the current three) at trying to get pregnant through regular unprotected intercourse. The guidelines also say that the upper age limit should rise from 39 to 42 in England and Wales. It also introduced rules designed to significantly reduce the number of twins and triplets being born.

Around one in every six or seven heterosexual couples in the UK who are trying for a baby experience problems conceiving a child. This is equal to approximately 3.5 million people. In 2011, nearly 14,000 women became pregnant through IVF.

Tim Child, who helped devise the guidelines and is the director of the Oxford Fertility Unit, said that the new guidelines would give hope to many couples.

“When a woman reaches her mid-30s her fertility begins to decline, even more so from her late 30s.”

Professor Adam Balen, of the British Fertility Society, said: “Infertility causes psychological harm for many of the people it affects and is recognized as a medical condition by the World Health Organization.”

Esco Wins Order fromHark Orchids USAEsco has been awarded the contract to supply Hark Orchids USA a total of 30 units of 4ft. customized horizontal laminar flow cabinets beating fierce competition from US and German manufacturers. Another 30 more units are expected to be delivered in the latter half of the year.

These cabinets will be delivered and installed by Esco Technologies, Inc. at Hark’s state-of-the-art orchid propagation and cultivation facility in Kalamazoo, Michigan. This is the first overseas facility of Hark Orchids which is trying to break into the fast growing US market.

Hark Orchideen was founded in 1904 as a small family gardening business with a small laboratory which later evolved to a specialized orchid laboratory. Currently, Hark is headquartered in Germany with some 333 laminar flow clean benches being used in their five state-of-the-art laboratories. Mass production of orchids is achieved through in vitro propagation using meristems also known as clones. In vitro propagation involves placing plant cuttings on a culture medium under sterile conditions. Over the years, Hark has developed a tested and proven set of procedures to provide the highest level of quality and yield.

Esco Equipment at PALL EuropeEsco GB installed a total number of 47 units of lab equipment at PALL Europe in Portsmouth, UK last December 2012. The units are a combination of 14 Airstream® Class II Biological Safety Cabinets (D-Series), 14 Frontier® Fume Hoods and 19 Airstream® Horizontal Laminar Flow Clean Benches.

The order was won in cooperation with Esco’s sub-dealer, Scientific Laboratory Supplies (SLS), following a long collaboration with the end client – PALL Europe, part of the global PALL Corporation.

The project was brought about by PALL Europe’s decision to move to a new headquarters to a different part of Portsmouth.

Frontier® Acela Fume Hood at the ISRANALYTICA 2013

Endor exhibited the Frontier® Acela Fume Hood at ISRANALYTICA 2013 held last January 30-31, 2013 at The David Intercontinental Hotel, Tel Aviv, Israel. The ISRANALYTICA 2013 Conference and Exhibition serves as the 16th Annual Meeting of the Israel Analytical Chemistry Society.

The annual meetings of the Israel Analytical Chemistry Society have become some of the largest annual analytical chemistry conferences in the world. This year they had the most number of attendees with 1,250 people participating in the conference, and 1,876 attending the exhibition.

This year the event included all the major companies, suppliers and service companies in Israel. Its large venue enabled a perfect atmosphere for networking and sharing new ideas.

ISRANALYTICA has been recognized by the International Society of Electrochemistry (ISE), and the Cooperation for International Traceability in Analytical Chemistry (CITAC).

Endor, Esco’s distributor in Israel, has been distributing a wide range of Esco products since 2005. The exhibition showcased safe handling of live animals, latest culturing solution, disinfection and the specific metering of biocides. The private event was held at the BSI located in Wako, Saitama, Japan last October 23-25, 2012.

The Animal Resource Development Unit maintains BSI’s well-equipped laboratory animal housing facilities. Their well-trained technical staff provides services such as transgenic mice generation and mouse embryo manipulation.

VIVA® Workstation Showcased at the RIKEN Brain Science Institute

Dr. Chitoshi Itakura, Director of BSI’s Research Resources Center, together with the researchers and animal technicians of BSI were very pleased with the VIVA® Dual Access Animal Containment Workstation. Some of the things they liked about the workstation are that it has a large work zone, adjustable height stands and it is easy to operate.

The Brain Science Institute was established in 1997 as part of RIKEN, an independent research institution supported by the Japanese government.

South Africa conducted a 5-day service training program last January 21-25, 2013. The first two days of the training were held at the Esco South Africa office while the next three days were held at the Attaché Guest & Conference Lodge, both in Midrand. The Esco Technical Manager, an NSF49-accredited engineer with many years of hands-on design, manufacturing, testing and troubleshooting experience, served as the trainer for the whole training program.

The first day of the program focused on the service training on ultra-low temperature freezers and CO2 incubators. The second day focused on Esco’s other thermostatic products and PCR thermal cyclers. A wide range of topics were covered on the third day: clean air technology, Airstream® Class II Biological Safety Cabinet and Airstream® Laminar Flow Clean Bench operational and maintenance training and gas decontamination/fumigation technique. The fourth day was all about validation and certification training while the last day covered topics on fume hood. The program included practical testing and demonstrations of servicing, commissioning and validation of equipment.

The service training was attended by service engineers of Esco and its distributors in South Africa. Each participant received a certificate of participation.

Esco MENA End-user Technical WorkshopEsco in Bahrain conducted a very successful end-user technical workshop in cooperation with the Ministry of Health (MOH) Oman, Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and Esco’s exclusive distributor, Al Hashar Pharmacy. The workshop was held last March 21, 2013 at Al Ain Hall-City Season Hotel, Muscat in Oman. The Esco Bahrain’s sales and technical manager served as the facilitator of the workshop.

One of the objectives of the workshop is to help participants develop an understanding of the general concepts of international standards involve in microbiology laboratories with the help of the World Health Organization & CDC biosafety guide books. The procedures of certification and validation of biosafety cabinets and laminar flow hoods were covered. Also discussed and demonstrated in the workshop are the safe use and routine maintenance & decontamination of biosafety cabinets.

After the workshop, representatives from the MOH and Al Hashar Pharmacy had a meeting with Esco’s representative. It was agreed upon on the meeting that there should be an inspection of biosafety cabinets installed in all government laboratories. The inspection will be conducted by the factory-trained engineers of Al Hashar Pharmacy. Cabinets which do not comply with international standards must be replaced. According to MOH, nearly 100 biosafety cabinets are installed in government laboratories all over Oman and approximately 25 of these do not meet the international standards.

It was a purely interactive and knowledge-based workshop with the participation of more than 200 participants from all over Oman which include pathologists, biomedical engineers, HVAC department staff, lab technicians, etc. The topics were Biosafety in Microbiology Laboratories and Biosafety & Laminar Flow Technology Awareness.

MENA Service TrainingEsco Bahrain conducted a service training for our distributors in the MENA region. The training was held at City Seasons Hotel in Dubai last March 6-8, 2013.

The program included practical testing and demonstrations of servicing, commissioning and validation of equipment. The first day covered certification/validation of biological safety cabinets and laminar flow hoods. The second day was all about troubleshooting of the same equipment while the last day was dedicated to thermostatic products.

The 15 participants came from the different parts of the MENA region. Most of the participants were trained before at Esco’s manufacturing facility in Bintan and the training in Dubai served as a refresher. One of the Esco’s NSF-accredited BSC Field Certifier served as the trainer with additional presentations from Esco Bahrain’s Sales and Technical Manager.

Each participant was given a certificate of attendance at the end of the training.

Esco’s Newest NSF-Accredited BSC Field Certifier

The National Sanitation Foundation (NSF) International is an independent, not-for-profit organization that provides standards development, product certification, auditing, education and risk management for public health and the environment.

Esco is proud to announce that it has added another NSF-Accredited Class II Biosafety Cabinet Field Certifier to its roster. One of the field service engineers of Esco has recently passed the NSF accreditation requirements. This is in addition to Esco’s Four other NSF-Accredited BSC Field Certifiers.

The NSF accreditation program evaluates the proficiency of individuals who perform routine field certification of biosafety cabinets. The program includes written and practical examinations. The written examination covers areas such as testing, biosafety, decontamination, cabinet design, etc. The practical examination evaluates an applicant’s ability to perform all of the nine tests identified in the NSF/ANSI Standard 49 Biosafety Cabinetry: Design, Construction, Performance, and Field Certification.

When people see the NSF Mark, they know the individual has met the initial and continued stringent accreditation requirements of NSF, the premier, independent, not-for-profit organization for public health, safety and environmental quality standards and certification.

Despite these incidents, around 86% of the respondents believe that their laboratories are safe places to work and that appropriate safety measures had been taken to protect employees. Yet almost half had experienced injuries ranging from animal bites to chemical inhalation. Some of the survey participants felt that any injuries they sustained were just part of the job. This way of thinking make them careless and commit poor safety practices such as working alone, students not properly trained to use equipment, or a general reluctance to wear safety glasses and laboratory coats.

The survey also revealed that safety standards are often not adhered to and around half of the respondents agreed that laboratory safety could be improved. Some participants felt that safety trainings are focused on training compliance regulations rather than on improving laboratory safety.

The importance of laboratory safety be reiterated to avoid more accidents and deaths. The use of protective gears and appropriate equipment play a big part in ensuring safety in the laboratory.

Esco’s range of laboratory equipment are designed and created with personnel, sample or product and environmental protection in mind. Esco’s focus is not solely to create good quality products, but we also greatly consider the safety of those who benefit from it.

An international safety survey revealed the different laboratory risks unrealized by researchers. The survey was commissioned by UCLA’s Center for Laboratory Safety and had 2,374 responding scientists. The center was established in March 2011 to help improve the practice of laboratory safety following the shocking death of a 23-year-old research assistant, Sheharbano Sangji. She was a chemical researcher working as a research assistant at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) when she died four years ago after receiving horrific burns while withdrawing a highly flammable chemical from a container. This was followed by another
