Product description

Storage Virtualization is the technology that

separates the logical representation o storage

rom the actual physical storage components.

This delivers the true bene ts expected rom

Storage Area Networks (SAN).

With its innovative, “Split-Path” architecture,

StoreAge SVM™ provides centrally managedstorage pooling and virtual volume allocations

or the entire SAN.

SVM enables independent scalability, top

per ormance, and high availability o all SAN

resources. It brings substantial improvements

to managing enterprise-class storage networks,

reducing administration costs and improving

utilization o expensive storage resources. SVM

also enables the implementation o advanced

disaster recovery and back up applications.

SVM operates in a heterogeneous SAN environ-

ment, which can include servers and storage

devices rom various vendors. Storage can be

exibly allocated to the servers and value-add-

ed storage applications using SVM. Managed

via a web-based GUI, storage can be organized

into stripe sets, storage pools, and then selec-

tively allocated to one or more servers. The

SVM appliance is connected to a Fibre Channel

loop or switched abric, and is capable o moni-

toring the status o physical devices connected

to the SAN. The SVM manages storage using

split-path architecture, serving the volume

maps to distributed virtualization agents run-

ning on a Data Path module appliance thatper orms the mapping with wire-speed. This

design enables ull utilization o SAN per or-

mance and provides superior scalability and

reliability. SVM is a key enabler or advanced di-

saster recovery strategies and other enterprise

storage applications, implemented above the

virtualization layer.

Principles o operation

The SVM provides a central point o storage

management across the entire SAN without

imposing a per ormance penalty.

By separating the control path and the

handling o metadata rom the data path, the

SVM provides centrally managed mapping

and other SAN unctions while maintaining

LSI SVM Architecture (above) the distributed nature o servers, Data Path

Module and storage devices. This architecture

enables the ull bandwidth o the SAN abric to

be utilized.

The Data Path Module retrieves the volume in-

ormation rom the SVM appliance and routes IO

rom the servers directly to the physical storage

devices or read/write operations.

SAN monitoring and operation can be per-

ormed by administrators via the SVM’s web-

based GUI. This monitoring may be integrated

with policy based storage management so t-

ware on various servers in the SAN via SVM’s

SAN Application Programming Inter ace (API)

and Command Line Inter ace (CLI).

n Servers are connected to the SAN with industry

standard HBAs, using standard, vendor-suppliedHBA drivers

n Data Path Module(s) are connected to the SAN

n Failover drivers in each server supporting ail-

over and load balancing across multiple HBAs

n Supports a wide variety o storage arraysn Web-enabled management

Key Bene tsSAN Management

The SVM provides a central point o management

or all enterprise SAN resources. The Web-enabled,

intuitive GUI is accessible through a standard web

browser.

Reduced TCO

Central point o management, e cient usage o

storage resources, ability to purchase the most

cost efective storage device when needed,

reduced load on storage administrator person-

nel — all contribute to a signi cant reduction

in Total Cost o Ownership o the enterprise

storage system.

SAN Scalability

The split-path design o SVM enables virtu-

ally limitless independent growth in terms o

number o servers, Data Path Modules, storage

capacity, IO per ormance and bandwidth.

High Performance

With SVM, data is trans erred between serversand storage resources, through “wire speed”

Data Path Modules. Striping across RAID arrays

urther increases total storage per ormance, and

is especially efective in providing cost-efective

video solutions.

High Availability

Complete redundancy is supported by the SVM.

Modi cations to system con guration (e.g., add

or delete servers or storage resources; create or

reallocate volumes) are done on the y without

system re-boot. SVM Agent on each server sup-ports multiple paths with automatic ail-over.

Storage Applications

The SVM provides a plat orm or advanced en-

terprise recovery, back-up and other SAN-aware

storage applications.

Improved Storage Utilization

SVM can dramatically improve storage utiliza-

tion. The improvements are done at the volume

level where thin provisioned volumes allocate

just the amount o storage actually needed by

the application. This also applies to the array

level where sharing storage rom several arrays

makes it no longer necessary to keep spare on

each array.

SAN Security

Servers are zoned only with the Data Path Mod-

ules and have no direct access to the storage.

Additionally only volumes that are explicitly

allocated to servers are accessible by them

through the Data Path Modules.

SVM also includes pro le based application to

manage storage administrator, ensuring that

each administrator can operate according to his

assigned privileges only.

Policy Based Infrastructure-Ready

The SVM enables third-party applications to

automate storage pooling, volume manage-

ment, and backup procedures using the SVM

SAN API and CLI.

Features

Storage Pooling

The SVM enables the allocation o virtual

volumes rom any SAN storage device to any

server. Volumes can be expanded over various

diferent mixed breed storage devices. Theutilization o storage resources can be maxi-

mized with storage pooling. The creation o

several pools according to site-de ned Quality

o Service (QoS) criteria allows uni orm alloca-

tion o storage with necessary characteristics to

application needs.

Striping

Striping a volume over several devices can

substantially increase per ormance, especially

with large stripe sizes, a megabyte or more, thatmatch application IO sizes.

Virtual Volume Management

Volumes are created rom storage pools and

stripe sets. Each volume can be allocated to

one or more servers and is not accessible to all

others.

When a volume needs to be expanded, more ca-

pacity can be added “on the y” rom one o the

storage pools. Creating, expanding or deleting a

volume does not require a server reboot.

Thin Provisioning Volumes

The SVM allows volumes to be thinly provi-

sioned. Such volumes are seen by the operating

system and the application according to their

virtual size, while allocating storage only or the

blocks that are actually used by the applica-

tion. Thin provisioned volumes prevent over

allocation o storage as well as downtime during

volumes expansions.

Centralized Storage Management

The SVM provides a central point or managing

all storage devices connected to the SAN.

Seamless Integration into Existing SAN

The SVM can be easily integrated into an exist-

ing SAN. It will not afect user’s data and the

administrator can select which o the physical

devices will be managed via the SVM, gradu-

ally migrating legacy SANs to a ully virtualized

environment, without copying the data.

Booting from the SAN

The SVM enables servers to boot rom virtual

volumes presented by the SVM.

Scripting and API

SVM provides SAN API and CLI, while enablingadministrators to automate procedures. Users

can write scripts or third-party applications

while accessing SVM unctionality via its API.

Interoperability and Sharing

Volumes can be allocated to multiple servers,

enabling storage sharing or cluster manage-

ment so tware, SAN le systems, and shared

database managers. Volumes can be reassigned

rom server to server, without copying the data.

Data Management Applications

The SVM includes top class data management

applications:

n multiView or low capacity snapshots

n multiCopy or ull size replications

n multiMigrate or online data migration

n multiMiror or synchronous and asynchronous,

local and remote mirror
