14 Jesus told people the good news that comes from God.

15 He said, ”The time has come! God‘s kingdom will soon be here. Turn back to God and believe the good news!”

16 Jesus was walking along the shore of Lake Galilee. He saw Simon and his brother Andrew. They were fishermen. They were throwing their nets into the lake.

17 Jesus said to them, “Come with me! I will teach you how to fish for people instead of fish”

18 At once the two brothers dropped their nets and went with him.

From Mark chapter 1, verses 14 to 18

2 Jesus used stories to teach people.

3 A farmer scattered seed in a field.

4 Some seed fell on the road. It was eaten by birds.

5 Other seeds fell on rocky ground. It started growing quickly.

6 When the sun came up the plants were scorched and dried up because they didn’t have enough roots.

7 Some seed fell where thorn bushes grew up. The thorns choked the plants. The plants didn’t produce any grain.

8 Some seed fell on good ground. The plants grew and produced 30 or 60 or 100 times as much as was scattered.

9 Then Jesus said, “If you have ears, pay attention.”

From Mark chapter 4, verses 2 to 8. What was the farmer doing?

Why didn’t the seed that fell on the road grow?

Jesus explained his story about the man sowing seed in his field. He said:

14 The farmer is spreading the message about God’s rule.

15 The seeds that fell on the road are people who hear God’s message, but Satan comes and snatches it away from them.

16 The seeds that fell on rocky ground are people who gladly hear the message and accept it straight away.

17 But they don’t have any roots. As soon as life gets hard or they are attacked for their beliefs, they give up.

18 The seeds that fell among the thorn bushes 19 are also people who hear the message,

But they are worried about the needs of this life, and they want to get rich. So the message gets choked out. They don’t produce any fruit.

20 The seeds that fell on good ground are people who hear the message and accept it. They produce 30, 60 or even 100 times as much as was planted.

39 Jesus got up and ordered the wind and the waves to be quiet. The wind stopped and everything was calm.

The Jews believed that if they ate the wrong food, or food that had been touched by non-Jews, it would make them ‘unclean’ (unfit to worship God). They washed everything they bought to make it ‘clean’ for them to eat. They always washed their hands when they came home to make them ‘clean’.

The Jewish leaders were angry when they saw some of Jesus’ disciples eating food without washing their hands first.

14 Jesus said, “Pay attention and try to understand what I mean.”

15 “The food that you put into your mouth doesn’t make you ‘unclean’ and unfit to worship God.

20 “What comes from your heart makes you ‘unclean’.

21 Out of your heart come evil thoughts, stealing, murder, unfaithfulness in marriage, greed, envy and pride.

23 All of these come from your heart, and they are what make you unfit to worship God.”

2 Jesus said to his disciples, I feel sorry for these people because they don’t have anything to eat. And some of them live a long way from here. How much food do we have?”

5 The disciples said, “There are seven small loaves of bread, it is not enough to feed such a crowd.”

6 Jesus told the people to sit down. Then he took the bread and blessed it.

7 He gave it to the disciples, and they gave it out to the people. He did the same with a few little fish.
