LIVORNO ( LEGHORN)

Livorno:;which is the port of Florence and of theLower Arno basin~ is built on the southern extremity of the beach-fringed plain of Pisa and is 10miles south of the mouth of the Arno River. The16th century town forms the nucleus of the moderncity, which has spread to the east and southeast. The old part is built on a pentagonal peninsula~which is limited on its seaward side by the basinsof the Darsena Vecchia and Laraeau Nuova, on theeast by the connection between Piazza Carlo Albertoand the mainland, and on its other sides by theconnection between Piazza. The Follo Reale isspanned by numerous bridges.

The principal industries of Livorno are shipbuilding, metallurgy and general engineering. Otherlarge industrial establishments include glass works,an important paint and varnish factory, cotton millsflour mills, dis llleries, a canning f'act.ory, theSolvay Soda Plant~ the Montecant Fertilizer Plant, and the Stanic Refinery. The smaller industriesinclude the manufacture of crystalized fruits, soaprubber goods, furniture and Singer Sewing Machines.

Livorno is the seat of the Italian Naval Academyand the Italian Naval War College, both of whichare located just outside the city. As the ItalianNavy Postgraduate School is located at the NavalAcademy~ there are numerous Italian naval officersin Livorno.

The Count of Monte Cristo; Alexandre Dumas'sfamous character, sailed from Leghorn to the island ofMonte Cristo, in search of his fabulous treasure.

As a result of war damage there is not much ofinterest in Livorno. Terrania, a popular summerresort located about 8 miles from Livorno, has goodbeaches, hotels, and restaurants. Visitors shouldnot miss going to Pisa and Florence, both of which

have sightsand splendors famous the world over.Beyond Pis~ about 20 kilometers~is an old walledtown called Lucca~ which is well out of the touristpath. A drive to Lucca through a fertile andpicturesque countryside and a trip around the oldnarrow and twisting streets are well worth seeing.

FLORENCE(Population 300~000) is beautifully situated

on the River Arno in Tuscany~ 60 miles from Leghorn. After being an Etuscan colony and a Romanmilitary station, it developed in the rtiddleAges into a flourishing independent city state. The 15th century- the epoch of the great ~edicif'ami.Ly, was the golden age of Florence. 1\ few ofthe men who~ either by birth or residence in thecity~ helped to create its matchless renown as acenter of art are the writers Dante (1265-1321),Boccaccio (1313-1375):1and lVlachiavelli(1469-1527)and the painters Giotto (1276-1337):1Botticelli(1447-1510), da Vinci (1452-1519):1Michelangelo(1475-1654) and Raphael (1483-1520). Among themost mteworthy of the host of splendid buildingsare the Cathedral of Santa }tiriadel Fiore (mainly14th century) with the Campanile known as Giotto'st.ower, the Baptistry of San Gi.ovanni., the PalazzoVecchio, and the Palazzo Pitti with its magnificentpicture gallery. Six graceful bridges once spannedthe river~ but most of these were damaged or destroyed by the Germans in their retreat northwardin August 1944.

PISA(Population 50,OOO;-;tands on both banks of

the river Arno at its mouth and 14 miles from Leghorn. Originally a.nEtruscan settlement, then a.Roman colony, Pisa rose to greatness in the MiddleAges when it became a free city and one of thegreatest naval and commercial powers in the Nediterrean. The artistic pride of Pisa lies in thePiazza del Duom0:lin the northwest corner of thetown, with the wonderful group of buildings com-

prlslng the Cathedral (11th-12th century), theBaptistry (12th centurY)9 the Campo Sante orCemetary$ and the Campanile (1173):1better knownas the Leaning Tower. The latter consists oftiers of marble columns on round arches formingopen ga.Ll er-i.es , and is 179 feet high and leans 13feet out of the perpendicular. It was from observing the oscillations of a suspended lamp in theCathedral that Galileo (1564-1642):1a native ofrisa, discovered his celebrated principal of thependulum. Another building of interest is theGothic Santa Maria delIa Spins.

TRANSPORTATION

Train and bus terminals are both located in thetrain station, situated about one mile northeast ofthe city. The depot itself is new and modern, containing above average station facilities. Passengerservice by rail is adequate. First and second classcompartments are clean, neat, and comfortable; however dining car service is poor and expensive.Connections to Pisa and Florence are good, leavingevery hour or two during the day; the trip to Florence takes slightly less than t.wo hours. There isonly one good day train to Rome, an express whichmakes the journey in approximately four hours. Bustransportation is provided by the C.li.T., and isconsidered excellent. Busses leave the city forPisa every half hour and for Rome several times aday.
