Education Concerts
Sunday ShowcaseIf your child is starting to outgrow Esso
Symphony for Kids concerts, we’d like to make
a suggestion. We have designed our Sunday
Showcase performances as an ideal “next step”
concert series. Four Sunday matinee concerts
each feature both a soloist from the ranks of
your Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, as well
as a young, rising classical star. The music
is an engaging mix of established classical
masterpieces, as well as little-known treasures
from yesterday and today.
In addition, come early for Sunday Preludes.
These half-hour talks begin at 1:15 pm, and
discuss the composers, the works, and the
musical forms and idioms for each concert.
It’s a great way for the emerging orchestral
music fan to begin to understand all that makes
classical music special. And stick around
after the show as well for Coffee Shop, where
audience members can meet and mingle with
the conductor and soloists they’ve just seen
onstage. Ask questions, hear insights, and
maybe even learn something!
Each year, the Edmonton Symphony
Orchestra’s Education concerts are
presented to nearly 27,000 students from
the capital region. Working with teachers
from both Edmonton school boards, the
ESO’s Education committee tailors concerts
appropriate to grade levels (K-3, 4-6, and
junior/senior high) and to curriculum.
Check out DiscoverESO.com for interactive
activities and games to enhance and
complement your family’s concert
experience. You’ll learn more about the
instruments of the orchestra, meet some
musicians, and even solve a musical
mystery! Keep checking back as new
activities and content will be added
throughout the year.

Like Esso Symphony for Kids, the ESO’s Educa-
tion concerts begin to foster a love of music,
and an understanding of the arts, that can last
a lifetime. Ask if your child’s school is a part of
the ESO’s Education series. Find out more at
DiscoverESO.com.

Dear Musical Families,
elcome to an ESSO Symphony for Kids
season all about exploration and discovery.
Inspired by our new education website,
DiscoverESO.com, these concerts will take you on
a journey to the heart of the orchestra to see what
makes it tick.
The Edmonton Symphony is your orchestra, and we
want to give you the chance to touch it and experiment
with it to discover how it works from the inside. We’ll
have some new interactive activities in the lobby, as
well as a few special guests along the way that will
highlight the fun, magic and excitement of making –
and listening to – music.
Although conducting the orchestra is one of the most
thrilling parts of my job, my favourite thing to do is
meet as many of you as possible in the lobby after the
concert. I love to hear your stories, your experiences,
to meet your family and your friends. It is your curiosity
and enthusiasm that makes music magical.
Thank you for coming, and I hope to meet you soon!

THE EDMONTON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA’S acclaimed education concerts for school audiences began shortly after the orchestra made the switch, in 1971, from a part-time, night-rehearsed orches-tra to a full-time ensemble. At a complement of 34 full-time players, the orchestra spent several seasons visiting Edmonton-area schools, in two chamber orchestras of 17 musicians each.
By 1975, the orchestra was bringing school groups to them – holding a couple of concerts a year at the Jubilee Auditorium. It was Mario Duschenes, hired to oversee the orchestra’s educa-tional eff orts, who really created the more formal-ized model which the ESO used for its concerts for schools. Former ESO Resident Conductor David Hoyt, and current Assistant Principal Trumpet William Dimmer, oversaw the increasingly popular series for nearly two decades after that.
ese days, Enbridge Resident Conductor Lucas Waldin works with Edmonton school board repre-sentatives, and members of the orchestra and ESO
staff to craft curriculum-related performances, tailored to grades K-3, 4-6, and junior and senior high school audiences, introducing approximately 27,000 students from all over Edmonton and northern Alberta each year to the richness of orchestral music.

ince 1989, Canada’s
Platypus Theatre has
been a trailblazer in
creating programs for children
that bring classical music to life
in an intelligent, entertaining
and interactive way. Critics,
educators, musicians, parents
and children have lauded the
company’s performances for
their creativity, originality and
high standards of execution.
Platypus’ seven original
programs have been seen by
over half a million spectators in
Canada, the United States, on
eight tours to Southeast Asia,
and most recently, in Australia.
After nearly 500 concerts
with more than 65 orchestras
worldwide, Platypus Theatre
has gained an unparalleled
reputation for excellence in
music education. In 2006, in
collaboration with TV Ontario,
Trace Pictures and the Toronto
Symphony Orchestra, Platypus
Theatre created a television
adaptation of their ever-popular,
How the Gimquat Found Her
Song. The fi lm was broadcast
many times on TVO and the
Knowledge Network in British
all seven of Platypus’ symphony plays, the television adaptation of How
the Gimquat Found Her Song, and the one-act play Lost River, which
was the 1991 winner of the Theatre BC’s Canadian National Playwriting
competition. As an actor and director, Peter has worked with companies
across Canada and the United States, most recently directing the world
premiere of the stage adaptation of Arto Paasilinna’s The Holing Miller
for Quantum Theatre in Pittsburgh. Among his favourite stage roles
are Richard in Shakespeare’s Richard II, also for Quantum Theatre, and
Louis Ironson in Angels In America at the Centaur Theatre in Montréal.
Peter received his MFA in theatre from the California Institute of the
Arts in 1988 and now lives in Ottawa with his wife, Sarah, and their two
children, Magda and Theo.

at the prestigious 2008 Banff World Television Festival. The fi lm is now

Platypus Theatre was also the subject of a nationally broadcast
documentary made by CTV (CKCO Kitchener) in 1991 and of a PBS
television full-performance broadcast in 2000. In addition to Gimquat,
the company’s programs include: Emily Saves the Orchestra, Rhythm
in Your Rubbish, Bach to the Future, Song of the Forest, Charlotte and
the Music-Maker, and A Flicker of Light on a Christmas Night.
Co-founder and Artistic
Director of Platypus Theatre,
PETER DUSCHENES has been
widely praised for his innovation
in presenting symphonic music
to young audiences. His ability to
bring the concert stage to life by
combining theatre and music has
led to commissions with orchestras
from coast to coast in Canada.

Platypus Theatre touring company since 1998. Film
and television credits include: How the Gimquat

credits include: The Comedy of Errors, Romeo and
Juliet, National Capital/e Nationale, The Anger In

Ms. Desormeaux’s work in improvisation and clown
has led to the creation of new theatre and independent
fi lm works including Rhythm In Your Rubbish for
Platypus Theatre, the critically acclaimed Umloüt,
and MöcShplat (clown-gibberish versions of Shake-
speare’s Hamlet and Macbeth) and Les aventures de
Matante et Madame. When left to her own devices,
Ms. Desormeaux can be found jamming with her pals

based stage manager with over 20 years in the
business. She has worked in theatres mostly in
eastern Canada, including The National Arts Centre

thousands of good causes – supporting
communities, contributing to
quality of life, and touching the lives of Canadians. As a company with deep roots in Canada, we view community investments not simply as
a responsibility, but essential to
building strong and healthy communities
– now and in the future.
