SYLLABUSOVERVIEW:

English through E.S.O.L is a comprehensive course that explores the interconnected world of writing, literature, vocabulary and grammar. The students will build on their vocabulary, writing skills, specially the

five- paragraph expository and persuasive essay in the preparation for the FSA Writing Exam. In addition, the students will explore different modes and genres of world literature and meet various prominent authors and their works. Vocabulary and grammatical skills will be emphasized in each chapter in connection with the theme explored and they will build their writing skills, as they also relate to important national and state

examination in the future such as SAT and FSA, required for graduation.

OBJECTIVES: At the conclusion of this course, the students should be able to:

Communicate effectively in the foreign language. Enhance their ability to write an expository and persuasive essay based on an assigned topic or

prompt. Identify, use and describe various literary forms and techniques, using the appropriate terminology. Transpose their previous knowledge to the new language Expand vocabulary and language skills Respond to literature through oral and written expression Practice critical thinking, reading and writing skills Develop the love of the English language. Develop the ability to use writing as a thinking and learning tool Enhance their ability to write a well-constructed, five paragraph expository and persuasive essay

based on an assigned topic or prompt.

Improve reading skills and show considerable learning gains for the FSA.

Improve reading skills and be well prepared for the FSA exam.

PURPOSE: Throughout this course, you will master the English language through 4 different competencies: Oral communication, Reading and Written comprehension, Creative writing. You will explore different genres in literature and read about various prominent authors and their work. In addition, you will be involved with learning different FSA reading strategies in order to improve your reading skills and achieve success on the FSA. These new acquired skills will simultaneously further develop and strengthen your vocabulary knowledge, as well as our listening, speaking and writing skills.

During this course, you will be responsible for reading, analyzing, interpreting and writing about each of the readings, short stories or plays studied in class:

READING SELECTIONS:

During this course, students will be involved with and responsible for Enrichment of their vocabulary. The students will be able to understand, use and master the vocabulary related to each chapter. Reading, analyzing, and interpreting the following different pieces selected.

SPELLINGThe students will learn about the sounds and the different rules in English spelling and pronunciation.

CONJUGATION / MASTERING THE VERBSThe students will be able to identify the verbs in the sentences, and conjugate them.

EXPRESSIONAudio-visual Impregnation.Tell a story or a detail of a story accurately.

READ BETTERThe students will play with the words and the expressions and understand them, knowing more about the English language, and master reading.

POETRYThe students will learn a poem and enjoy the art of reciting.

RATIONALE FOR THE OBJECTIVESIncrease the understanding of the English writing and build at the same time vocabulary for the oral part.The book used is Edge and it is divided in 4 units.Every chapter starts with an essential question related to the vocabulary to learn during this chapter and the writing prompt to be used during the chapter. Each chapter is accompanied by a literature piece, an autobiography, a biography, a play or a poem

C LASSROOM POLICIES MAKE-UP WORK:

YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR MAKING UP ALL ASSIGNMENTS YOU MISSED WHILE ABSENT or will get a “z” (=2Fs). Call a friend and get the missed work or come and see me about the missing work. Per school policy, there will be no make-up examinations or quizzes when missed as a result of an unexcused lateness or absence. Make-up examinations are your responsibility. Be prepared to take the exam upon your return to school. Work is due at the beginning of class on the date specified. Internet work

will be timed, after the date you will not have access to the exercises or exam online. You will register in class to Remind, YOU MUST HAVE A VALID E-MAIL ADDRESS to receive assignments and feedbacks for HOMEWORK online. I will not accept excuses for missing homework! (Not even a parents' note)

DISCIPLINE

Treat yourself, the subject matter, your classmates and teachers with maturity and respect. Bathroom breaks will be limited, go to the bathroom before my class. Wait for your turn to speak. Raise your hand and wait to be called on. Follow directions the first time they are given, do not work ahead of everyone. Be prepared for class. Enter and exit the classroom quietly and in an orderly manner. Your friends will not be able to come to my class to talk to you or drop off any homework they were

copying from you or to give you an IMPORTANT message! Be in class on time or you will find yourself locked out of class after the bell. No student will be allowed tardy because they were making up work for another teacher. If tardy you

must have an official pass and you MUST present it to me upon arrival. I will dismiss you, NOT THE BELL. Disruptive behavior is unacceptable and will be taken care after class; you will have to stay to talk to

me and will not receive a pass to your next class . If you do not stay you will receive a referral for insubordination.

Your parents will be contacted either for good or improper behavior. If you have a problem in my class, please see me at the beginning of the hour do not wait. Your problem

Your homework is essential - If you did not understand or you are confused during the lesson in class, ask questions, homework is an extension of the work done in class. It provides you with the opportunity to review analyze and apply what was introduced in class, so pay attention and work in class.

Your homework (mainly online) will be checked for completion. Most homework will receive an academic grade. Homework online will be graded online immediately or by the teacher and you will get your feedback online and in class.

Your binder will have to be organized and labeled by sections (grammar edge, writing, reading, passwords, e-mail addresses and websites addresses). All your papers must have your last name, first and the date on the left side as well as your class period.

Your papers will be in the binder not pockets (see picture)

Cell phones or electronic devices are not permitted in my class. Your phones will be in the rack on the wall every class, except if the teacher tells you to use it in class. You will have an iPad in class assigned to you.

I see your phone you lost your phone! If you have your phone in your pocket IT WILL BE TURNED OFF! If I confiscate your phone I will send it to the grade disciplinarian to the office until your legal guardian comes to retrieve it! You will be required to serve a one hour detention after school on the same week the phone or electronic device was confiscated.

ABSOLUTELY NO SLEEPING IN MY CLASS – NO HOODIES-

No head down on the desk, on your book bag or hoodie on your head to camouflage that you are sleeping! You will be disciplined accordingly. Please limit TV time IN SPANISH to ONLY ENGLISH CHANNELS to help them get used to the daily vocabulary and sound of the English language. Listen to the news in English on a daily basis! Read the newspapers in English!
