Description

This course will be a lot of self-motivation. You will spend a good portion of the time working with your classmates in an independent study style setting. I will arrange times for you to come into class to practice conversation and listening skills. We are now in the process to start building upon the foundation that you set the last couple of years.

Goals

• to communicate with basic language skills• to apply the proper sentence structure of the language• to use future, conditional, and command form

subjunctive• to use reflexive verbs• to read and listen for details• to learn the demonstrative and possessive pronouns• to apply direct and indirect pronouns• to learn basic information regarding the history,

geography and culture of Spanish - speaking countries and regions

• 1 – 2” 3 ring binder• 3 – Dividers

– Bell work– Notes– Blank Paper

• Writing Materials– Pens (Black or Blue ink only!) and/or pencils and erasers

• Red ink will not be accepted

– Paper for the binder

• Spanish/English Dictionary (preferably University of Chicago Spanish-English Dictionary Revised 6th Edition; $3.97 @ Walmart). However other Dictionaries will work (Optional)

Students are expected to bring all of their supplies everyday to class. Being prepared is part of being in class. You will not be allowed to go to your locker within the first ten minutes of class.

Participation

• Students are expected to participate in class. There will be much class discussion and activities completed in class. Every student will participate. Learning a language is not a spectator sport; to learn a language you need to be active, participate and practice.

• All students are expected to follow the Spartan Way by being safe, responsible, respectful, and your best.

• If you have a question about material being covered or aspects being discussed, it is your responsibility to ask!

• Tests and quizzes will be the largest part of your grade. There will be formal, informal and performance based assessments.

• Announced in advanced• Written on the board in RED• If absent must take before you leave or the

day you return• Can re-take any quiz or test, except the

Re-takes

• You must wait two days before you can retake

• You must complete the study guide and turn it into Mr. Barker– Study guides are not worth any

points, they are your ticket to retake a test or quiz

• Will be presented throughout the year.

• Must have all other work submitted before I will enter the extra credit.– no zeros

• Goes in as an assignment– Entered at the end of the semester

• A, B, C grades follow Moberly High School procedures & percentages

• Term grades– 20% = Assignments– 80% = Tests & Quiz Scores

• Semester grades– 90% = Term grade– 10% = Final Exam

• Including: – Cell phones– Ipods & Ipads– MP3 players & Tablets– Calculators– Etc.

• Not allowed in my class, phones will go to the office, everything else will go in my desk until the end of class.

• Occasionally we will use them to help us on assignments.

Discipline

If you choose not to follow class rules, guidelines, instructions or policies the following steps will be utilized:

• Student receives a warning– After 3 warnings in one class period the student will be asked to leave

the classroom for the rest of the day.

• Private conference with me after class• Phone call or email home to parents• Office referral• In case of a severe disruption the above steps will be skipped and

the student will be sent immediately to the office.If the teacher is not able to identify the student(s) that is/are

responsible for the disruption that group of students or the entire class will receive an alternate assignment or even pop quiz (this does count as advanced warning of the quiz).

Rules

1.Come prepared each day to work, this means bring all supplies needed.

2.Follow the Spartan Way: Be safe, be responsible, be respectful and be your best

3.Remember Spanish is not English.4. Conduct yourself in a manner that no one will question your

character, or actions.5. Only speak positively about the Toronto Blue Jays, St. Louis

Cardinals, Calgary Flames, Canadian National Hockey Teams, BYU Cougars, UVU Wolverines, Missouri State Bears, Calgary Stampeders, Manchester United, FC Barcelona, Cobreloa, Moberly Spartans, Chilean National Soccer Team (La Roja) and the German National Soccer Team.
