Dear Friends of St. Catherine’s Academy,

It is with gratitude that I share that we have completed our 2018–19 school year on June 14, 2019. We are now enjoying our Summer School Program.

Although we are in our summer months, we the administration staff are hard at work preparing for our 2019–2020 school year. Hard work never stops, and neither do our expenses! We recognize this challenge and hope you can help us in with our 1889 Annual Pledge. We have attached our 1889 Join the Club Campaign.

The 1889 Club is a special way to remember St. Catherine’s Academy founding year of 1889 and celebrate our 130 years of outstanding Catholic education with a military tradition. Members of the 1889 Club give an automatic gift of $18.89 each month by credit card, or debit card. Over the course of a year, that’s over $225 to support cadets of St. Catherine’s Academy. Choose to sign up for one year or cancel anytime.

We have conveniently attached the enrollment form. Please don’t hesitate to call or email me with any questions 714-772-1363 or [email protected]

We look forward to seeing you soon! Please come “home” to visit whenever you are able.

God’s special blessings & loving gratitude for your goodness to your St. Catherine’s family,

Sister Johnellen TurnerAdministrator/PrincipalSt. Catherine’s Academy

We had a great school year. It is with great sadness that we report that we had two Sisters retire, and one teacher is moving on from our school. I would like to share we will be adding new faces to our faculty team. We send a St. Catherine’s family welcome to Mrs. Noemi Schabert, our third grade teacher; Kirstie Sells, our new piano teacher; and returning to her beloved St. Catherine’s, Sister Laurence Marie Diaz, O.P.

We were honored to host Major Zaborowski Celebration of Life in our St. Thomas Aquinas Chapel on July 16, 2019. Both Gretchen and Larry spent many wonderful years here at St. Catherine’s Academy.

Larry is preceded in death by his son Douglas Zaborowski, brother Jack Zaborowski, and wife Gretchen Zaborowski. Larry is survived by his children Chris (daughter) and Jerry White, Julie (daughter) and Harry Freund, Jeff (son) and Wendy Zaborowski, Annie (daughter) and Tom Faris, and Stew Heathcote; his 10 grandchildren Trevor and Kyle White, Mackenzie (granddaughter) and Adam Kordich, Garrett and Madelyn Freund, Ryland and Landon Zaborowski, Katie, Grant, and Grady Faris; one great grandchild Cooper Kordich; and sister Jean Gardner.

Lawrence Paul Zaborowski, known by many who adored him as Major, passed away unexpectedly on July 2, 2019 in Palm Desert, California at the age of 81. Larry was born in Chesterton, Indiana, to the late Delores and Robert Zaborowski on December 9, 1937. He was the oldest of three children. He attended Bishop Noll High School in Hammond, Indiana and began his football career as a guard on the offensive line. He later attended Arkansas State University on a football scholarship where he was named Arkansas State’s first Academic All-American in 1959. Larry was a member of ROTC and received a regular Army Commission upon his graduation from Arkansas State. In 1960, he reported to Fort Benning, home of the U.S. Army’s Infantry School. Larry’s first training assignment was in Gelnhausen, Germany where he created lifelong friendships. He thoroughly enjoyed his time there and the bond created with his “Gelnhausen Gang.” Although promotable to Captain, Larry elected to resign his commission in the Army in 1963 in order to pursue other opportunities. It was then that he relocated to California. In 1963, he met his wife Gretchen while working as a night assistant at St. Catherine’s Military School. They were

later married on May 23, 1964 and he cherished his nearly 50 years of marriage with her. As a testimony to their love and commitment, Larry and Gretchen grew their family to include five children. After leaving the U.S. Army, Larry worked as a teacher, coach, and Athletic Director for Garden Grove Unified School District for almost

a decade. In 1974, he was chosen to follow in the footsteps of his father in law, Major Charles Schmitt, and carry on as the new Commandant at St. Catherine’s Military School in Anaheim. For nearly three decades Larry served as Commandant with honor and integrity. It was during his tenure there that he cultivated strong relationships with the cadets, their families, and the Dominican Sisters. Larry took pride in laying a foundation of honor, discipline, and respect for the cadets and ultimately watching them carry those traits into adulthood. He and Gretchen built a beautiful relationship at St. Catherine’s bridging a love of family, community, faith, and military tradition. This is where he left his most powerful imprint sharing heartfelt compassion, strong leadership, and his love for the community. Larry retired in 2003 and moved to Palm Desert with his wife Gretchen. He continued to work in education after the move and landed a position as an Equipment Manager for the football team at College of the Desert. In typical Larry fashion, he took care of those players as they were his own and gave them every ounce of energy he had left. Larry was extremely devoted to sharing his love, remaining true to his Catholic faith, and giving back to others in any way he could. Throughout the years, he cherished his time with family, showed pride in our accomplishments, and thrived on our successes. A gift to us all, Larry was an adoring husband, a proud father, a loving grandfather and great-grandfather, a compassionate friend, a dedicated employee, and a powerful leader. The remarkable life he lived and the enduring legacy he left behind will be etched in our memories forever.

Coach Greg Jones has been with St. Catherine’s Academy serving as the Athletic Director and Physical Education Teacher at St. Catherine’s Academy since 1999. As a former alumnus, Coach Greg graduated from St. Catherine’s Academy, Servite High School, and California State University,

Fullerton with a B.S. Degree in Child Development. At SCA, athletics and physical education classes

complement our military tradition. Sportsmanship is a key element in the SCA program. St. Catherine’s athletes play with honor, integrity, and sportsmanship.

Coach Greg enjoys teaching the cadets various types sports such as flag football, basketball, and volleyball. Coach Greg also enjoys teaching the cadets fitness such as running, push-ups and pull- ups. Coach Greg hosts a Presidential Physical Fitness Test. Testing consists of the following:

1. “1” Mile Run (Timed)2. Shuttle Run (Timed)3. Sit-up (“1” Minute)4. Push-ups or Pull-Ups 5. V-Sit & Reach (Stretching)

To qualify for the Presidential Physical Fitness Award, participants must score 80% (4 of 5 events must qualify under the Presidential qualifications).

I’m 83 years old this year and have been retired for 18 years. My career for forty years in international aviation management necessitated my living and working in major markets throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia including Japan and Hong Kong, Along the way, I learned early in my career that if one wants to move ahead and be successful in their endeavors, it’s essential that one plan their work, work their plan and meet their deadlines and commitments.

Also, try to find the person who is great at what you want to do. Chances are that someone is already doing what you want to do and crushing it. This person has knowledge to impart. Learn

all you can about them, devise some questions about what you’ve learned, then take them out on a coffee date to figure out how they got to where you want to be. Ask them to become your mentor. This will help you deliberately practice the skills you want to learn, with someone who can give you clear feedback and can speak from their own experience.

The thoughts I have written above helped me tremendously to obtain my first management position with Pan American World Airways right out

of college. My career in International Aviation took off from that point in time and lasted for forty years until I retired.

All the best, Richard Boynton.

Mrs. Hope Hynes has been on the staff at St. Catherine’s since 1989. While still a college student, she assisted the Band Director with developing the marching band. Several years later, she became the full-time Band Director and general music teacher. As the program has grown and developed, she expanded the availability to learn a musical instrument at SCA. Band

is now available to 4–8 grade. The band performs throughout Orange County and Los Angeles County, with performances throughout the school year: parades, concerts, community events, special events for SCA (Military Ball, Military Parades, Catholic Schools’ Week, etc.) The band has made two trips to Washington D.C. to march in the National Memorial Day Parade and perform a concert at the Airforce Memorial in Arlington.

General music classes are a weekly adventure in singing,

listening and learning about all styles of music; the Primary program is growing stronger every year. This year the Tk–4th grades will be exploring note reading, percussion instruments, singing, dancing, synchronized movements and collaborative learning; 5th graders will learn note reading, how to play recorders and basic music composition. We also have a developing choir to sing at our weekly masses and special occasions. This will be open to all grades.

Our guitar program consists of level classes that meet once a week. Grades 4th through 8th are welcome to join; SCA provides guitars and music books. Guitar classes perform two recitals per year.

Our piano classes are growing, too. This year piano lessons are open to all grades, from TK students to 8th grade. Piano students receive a private lesson once a week and will perform in two recitals during the school year.

Come see us at registration and find out which musical experience at SCA is the best for your son.

Music Programs

The Marching Knights perform in various parades in and around the County of Orange, and Los Angeles. The Knights have performed in Washington DC and have been asked several times to perform again.
