1          What are the principles of supportive communication and how does it differ from persuasive communication?  Provide some illustrations when you would want to use supportive communication and describe what you would say. 

 

 

1. Why must communication be restricted in an organization?  Can you provide any examples, fictitious or real, illustrating how the free flow of communication can disrupt an organization?

 

Lesson 13

1          How well does the decision making process outlined in the chapter correspond with the actual way you make decisions?  Identify a major decision you have made in the past few months, and look for each of these decision-making steps in your behavior.

 

2          What is bounded rationality?  Provide two or three illustrations from your own experience to demonstrate the concept of bounded rationality.

 

Lesson 14 

1          What is the relationship between the two leader behaviors, initiating structure and consideration, and the two group roles discussed earlier:  work roles and maintenance roles?  Based on your own observations of leaders, provide some illustrations of these two leader roles

 

2          Identify and describe someone you have observed who was a great transformational leader and someone who was a good transactional leader.  How were they different and what were the effects of these differences? 

 

Lesson 15 

1          What are the determinants of personal power and how can you increase your personal power?  If you were the secretary of a pre-professional student club, such as the dental club, what could you do to increase your personal power? 

 

2          Subunits within an organization can increase their power by controlling strategic contingencies.  Choose an organization and identify which strategic contingencies are being controlled by which subunits and with what effect.

 

Lesson 16

1          What are the major challenges in balancing work and family responsibilities?  How were these challenges handled in your family as a child and how do you plan to balance them in your family as a parent? 

 

2. What are the advantages and disadvantages of different stress management techniques?  Which stress management techniques do you prefer personally?
