COLLECTED ESSAYS OF SIR WILLIAM OSLER. TWO OF THREEVOLS

Birmingham,Al. 1985, Classics of Medicine Library. These books are bound in black bonded leather withgilt designs on both covers and the spine. Awesomelooking books, but I thought it best to show the photoof the bookworm instead. Webber devotes the mostspace in his book to Osler, four and a half pages . In 1923, nearly four years after his death,the Bibliographical Society published Osler'sIncunabula Medica, a Study of the Earliest PrintedMedical Books, 1467-1840. Webber regarded thisbook as one of the scarcest books to obtain. In 1929,Clarendon Press published Bibliotheca Osleriana, a Catalogue of Books Illustrating the Historyof Medicine and Science. All 7778 titles were part of Osler's personal library........ Now to explain the reason for the bookworm photo. I first saw the Collected Essays of SirWilliam Osler at the March 2000 Book Fair in St. Petersburg. Volume I contains thePhilosophical Essays, many of which were reprinted from Aequanimatis With Other Essays toMedical Students, a popular book on ebay. Vol II contains the Educational Essays. Vol IIIcontains the Historical and Biographical Essays. I went through Vol I and Vol II at the book fair,and, not being a medical student, I was losing interest fast. But when I started going through VolIII, I did a doubletake. Interspersed with some more medical essays were essays on OliverWendell Holmes, John Keats, John Locke, Sir Thomas Browne, and Robert Burton. The icing onthe cake was the essay, Illustrations of the Bookworm, which details his "capture" of abookworm from some wormed books he had just received from a Paris bookseller in 1915. Oslerhad Horace Knight of the British Museum make the drawings, which appeared with his essay inthe Bodleian Quarterly Record. Moving on with this anecdote though.....All I wanted was Vol III, but the bookseller at the bookfair wouldn't budge and wanted $150 for the entire set. It's taken me almost a year but I boughtthese two volumes on ebay for $39.99! About six months ago I bid $99 for the complete set andgot outbid. After adding all of this info, I noticed that I'm on the wrong web page, and thus the reason foradding it under Essays for now. I'll probably leave it here and add it to Books About Books too.

More than likely, the author, Charles Paine(1775-1810), is the son of Robert Treat Paine(1731-1814), author of the patriotic poem, Adamsand Liberty, which was written for and sung to thetune of Anechron in Heaven, at the fourthanniversary of the Massachusetts Chiritable FireSociety in 1798. We are all familiar with the tune of Anachron in Heaven, an english bar ballad;it is the tune of the Star Spangled Banner.

His essay, Dreamthorp, about the village thatbecame his home, is but a prelude, a teaser to essayssuch as the likes of Christmas and On The ImportanceOf Man To Himself. A Shelf In My Bookcase, whichcontains the reasons why certain books are on this oneparticular shelf of his, makes me want to acquire thebooks that are on his shelf ( I have two already). But,the essays that really got my attention were On The

Writing Of Essays, and Men Of Letters, which were indepth studies and glimpses of the essayistin general and certain essayists in particular. Both A. Edward Newton and Christopher Morleyrecommended this book. Now I know why.
