SEPTEMBER NEWSLETTER NOTES FROM THE PASTOR’S PORCH

What is Your One Holy Passion? George Croly was an Anglican clergyman. A man of remarkable gifts, he was also a novelist, a historian, a theologian, a dramatist, a poet, and a satirist. When he turned away from all of his abilities and achievements to face God, he hungered for a holy, consuming love for the Lord. Hear again and con-sider the words he writes in this prayer: Spirit of God, descend upon my heart; Wean it from earth, through all its pulses move; Stoop to my weakness, mighty as thou art, And help me love thee as I ought to love. Teach me to love thee as thine angels love, One holy passion filling all my frame; The baptism of the heaven-descended dove, My heart an altar, and thy love the flame. -George Croly, 1867, UM Hymnal #500

Please note the cry for totality: “through all its pulses move” and “filling all my frame.” Croly knew that anything less than all was not a satisfactory offering to present to God. He dared not be content with anything less. His offering must, in accord with the Old Testament thinking, be a whole burnt offering. How are you presently respond-ing to God’s love? Whole heartedly or something less? Too often the church has been willing to present a gospel that demands less of its members than what Brother Croly has described. When it does, it is making no accommodation for its followers. It is actually cheating the needy. A partial surrender to Christ means a partial experience of his grace, and surely that is neither a gain, nor the full intent of the Father’s love for each of us. As certainly as the Spirit is better than the flesh, a life in which the Spirit moves through every pulse and in which a burning, passionate love “fills all” its “frame,” is better than one with mixed loyalties. Surely the Christ of Calvary concurs with Brother Croly.

OUTREACH/MISSION NEWS I pray everyone has enjoyed a productive and peaceful summer. As we ap-proach a new school year, I am happy to pass on the thanks of the folks at ACCORD and the Community Action Angels for the generous donations of school supplies they received from our church. We were an important part of the school supply ministry that provided new book bags and assorted school supplies for fifty-seven deserving children in our area. Thank you all for your enthusiastic support of this program. On Saturday, August 18, a group of intrepid chefs from our church prepared and served a simple, nutritious meal to more than twenty-five members of the Wellsville community at the Christian Temple. This is a wonderful ministry, characterized by good fellowship and extravagant generosity of spirit. Our next opportunity to engage in this outreach ministry is in October. If you are interested in participating, please contact Bryan Caldwell or any member of the Outreach/Mission Team. Our team welcomes new ideas and initiatives for reaching out to others in our community who may be in need of the light of our Lord and Savior, Jesus the Christ. Please share any thoughts you may have regarding expanding and enriching our out-reach and mission endeavors. Your thoughts, your prayers and your participation are critical components of our efforts to positively impact the lives of those God places around us. Bryan Caldwell

In this season now before us, I invite your heart to witness with mine as we walk intently toward the fullness of the life God intends. Let us not be weary in well doing, and let us persevere in the full trust that the Spirit can and will complete Love’s work in us if we but wholly surrender the priority of our contending passions. Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us...Eph 3:20 ESV; let us journey together for His glory! In Christ alone, Pastor Greg

NAOMI CIRCLE Since Naomi Circle didn’t meet in July or August, we are sure all the women are ready to gather again (and talk about the husbands according to one of the men of our church). We always have a good time of fun, fellowship and joy. Each month has a different focus and all women are invited. There is no membership list or any attendance restrictions. Our next gathering will be held downstairs on Wednesday, September 19th at 2:00 PM. Attending will be a very sweet experience, with the theme of “All Things in Modera-tion”. Each of us is asked to bring a dessert to share for our dessert buffet!! Hopefully,

you can also bring a few copies of the recipe card. Gloria Shay will do the devotional based on Psalms 34:8. Gloria also signed up for laundry duties in September! We look forward to seeing many of you. Diane Forsberg and Linda Austin, Co-chairpersons

UNITED METHODIST MEN Greetings from UMM ! As summer is rapidly moving to September, Bryan and I wish to thank all of UMM for their help with programs and events over the past year. We have worked together in fellowship side by side with much success. Notice it is about us and we. The Lords' prayer does not refer to me or I, but refers to us and we as we pray and work together in ministry. We are here for each other. The recent steak bake was very well received. Thanks to Max and his crew for the good meal. Our next breakfast will be September 16th. Pastor Greg, Darrin, and Bill will be cooking. See you there! All are welcome at the Friday morning Bible Study at 9am. We always have a good time of study and discussion. UMM - where all men and boys are welcome. Blessings to all! Alan and Bryan

TRIPLE L

We met at the church for our picnic luncheon on June 21st with 19 in attendance. Max & Gloria Shay hosted and we had our usual hot dogs and hamburgers with many deli-cious salads, baked beans and desserts.

Of course our theme once more was red, white and blue to celebrate between Flag Day on the 14th of June and Independence Day on the 4th of July. Many quips were read for laughter by Gloria Hamlin and Max & Gloria Shay. Also a story about the military guards who take care of Arlington national cemetery in Washington to help us remem-ber the seriousness of the duties required of these men and some of the history of our nation. We finished by standing and singing “God Bless America” and closing with prayer. Everyone helped to clean up as usual with many thanks.

Our next gathering will be Thursday, September 20 at noon. Please bring a dish to share and your tableware. If anyone would like to host, contact the church office.

LIBRARY UPDATE

The end of summer is beginning to fade into the fall of the year. Summer has been great with all the getting together with family, friends and getaways or catching up on home projects. Hoping your time was enjoyed and you were able to catch up on may things and accomplish much.

This month we entered 31 books. 27 books were fiction and 4 books non-fiction. Books were donated by Betty Stoll, Ruth McPherson, Barbara Dunn, Joan Smith and Sue Browning. If you attended the Lenten Services this season you will remember the video “Restored by Tom Berlin” which Pastor Greg and Bonnie narrated. It was a great message. It is now in the Library in book form. It’s an easy reading book with an inter-esting message. Books were also purchased by a donation from Naomi Circle.

We would like to invite everyone to join us in the Church Welcome Room before and after church for a cup of coffee, tea or juice. Usually there may be a sweet or two to enjoy. Come in to say “hello” and meet some others while you are there.

If anyone would like a Prayer Bear for a relative, friend, or a special person who is having a difficult situation or medical problem, please contact any member of the Tuesday bible study class, the church office or myself. The bears are sent with prayers and blessings from our bible study group. Sue Browning

~ Focus on Prayer ~ Praying Through the Bible

“As the deer pants for the water brooks, so pants my soul for You O God. My

soul thirsts for God, for the living God.”Psalm 42:1-2

The Scriptures were written by people who felt the same desires and faced

the same discouragements as we do. They too were dismayed at times by

their circumstances. They knew what it was like to cry out to a silent God, to

come to the end of themselves, and to feel their emotions going “over the

edge.” Yet the people of the Bible are important to us because they lived

long enough to recover their sense of joy and confidence in God.

As we struggle through our own fears and disappointments, we can find re-

newed hope by using their thoughts as a reflection of our own hearts and

prayers. The Scriptures hold many good examples of prayer expressed for

varied times of need. As we use these to guide our own prayers, all we need

do is make each verse applicable to our own situation. Not only do we use

the Scriptures to guide our own prayers for supplication but also for praise to

God.
