INTERNATIONAL SUMMER / WINTER PROGRAMMES (i-SP)NUS students can participate in i-SPs offered by partner universities and global university networks which NUS is a member of.

These i-SPs allow students to explore and cultivate a deeper appreciation of the culture and lifestyle of their host countries through opportunities for personal development and independent travel. Some i-SPs also allow students to explore non-traditional countries. These programmes are generally held during the NUS vacation periods between May and August (summer) and December and January (winter).

DURING MY TIME AT HANYANG UNIVERSITY’S INTERNATIONAL WINTER SCHOOL, I WAS LUCKY ENOUGH TO EXPERIENCE WINTER AND EVEN SNOWFALL IN SOUTH KOREA! SOME TIPS FOR MY PEERS GOING ON OVERSEAS PROGRAMMES, PLEASE LEARN AS MUCH AS YOU CAN ABOUT THE LOCAL PRACTICES AND CUSTOMS BEFORE DEPARTING FOR THE PROGRAMME, AND ALWAYS BE COURTEOUS WHEREVER YOU ARE. DOING THIS PROACTIVELY CAN HELP CREATE A SMOOTH-SAILING AND MEMORABLE STUDY ABROAD EXPERIENCE.

STUDY TRIPS FOR ENGAGEMENT AND ENRICHMENT (STEER)The NUS Study Trips for Engagement and EnRichment (STEER) are programmes designed to familiarise students with the diverse socio-cultural-economic environment of new and fast-evolving regions through a mix of classroom-based learning and experiential site visits. Inaugurated in December 2010, the STEER programmes have expanded to many countries in Asia, Africa, Europe, the Middle East and Latin America.

NUS STEER programmes have thematic curricula that help our undergraduates break existing mindsets about these emerging regions through participation in an immersive educational and cultural experience.

STEER destinations: Please check the GRO website for updated information: www.nus.edu.sg/gro/

ELIGIBILITY & APPLICATION PROCESS

• Applications typically open from January to May and from May to September for STEER programmes held between May and July and between December and January, respectively. Students should look out for announcements from their Faculties, School or the GRO website www.nus.edu.sg/gro/

ONE THING I LEARNED AND ADMIRED ABOUT THE ISRAELIS IS HOW THEY TOOK OWNERSHIP OF THE ISSUES AROUND THEM AND USED THEM AS STARTING POINTS TO FORMULATE NEW, INNOVATIVE IDEAS AS SOLUTIONS TO SOLVE THESE PROBLEMS. THIS IS ANOTHER REASON WHY ISRAEL HAS SO MANY START-UPS, AS THERE IS A NEVER-ENDING FLOW OF IDEAS. I REALIZED THAT I COULD DO THE SAME. INSTEAD OF COMPLAINING ABOUT SOMETHING, I GIVE IT SOME THOUGHT, AND MAYBE ONE DAY AN IDEA OF MINE COULD BECOME A SOLUTION TO AN ACTUAL PROBLEM.

• MENDAKI-NUS Overseas Programme Fund• NUS Awards for Study Abroad (NASA) - NASA Exchange Bursary - NASA Exchange Scholarship• NUS Alumni Student Exchange Awards• SEP Award for the Community Spirited• Jacob Phang Memorial Scholarship (for ECE students only)• Loh Boon Chye & Family SEP Awards (financially-needy students on SEP to the UK, the USA and China)

FINANCING YOUR SEP

SEP is a great opportunity for students to experience studying in an overseas university without worrying about additional tuition fees of overseas partner institutions. During SEP, students continue to pay NUS tuition fees, but apart from this, students must ensure that they have the financial means for other expenses like airfare and living costs during their SEP abroad.

Students should consider the affordability of various SEP destinations when planning their exchange semester(s), as the cost of living varies for different destinations.
