Concept Sorts vs. Sound Sorts These two types of sorts are included in your kit, but they serve different purposes. Concept sorts are a great way to introduce sorting to your students. They provide practice in early concepts, vocabulary, critical thinking, and oral language. Teach concept sorts as open sorts, leaving out the Category Header Cards. The headers are optional, representing suggested categories. Encourage students to find different ways to sort the pictures by concepts. You may choose to add the category headers later. (See Concept Sort Demonstration.) The purpose of sound sorts is to build phonemic awareness through listening for common sounds among the picture names. Although you can warm up your students for sorting through open sorts, we suggest primarily sorting sounds as closed sorts using the designated categories. Therefore, knowing the specific name assigned to each picture is necessary for completing the sound sort, unlike the concept sort. Be open to creativity, however; a student might assign a picture a different name than intended and find a category it fits anyway. (See Picture Sort Demonstration.) Picture-Word Sorts Picture-word sorts create a smooth transition into word sorting. After sorting the Picture Cards by sound categories, match them to corresponding Word Cards, all with the students’ help. (See Picture-Word Sort Demonstration.) Concept Sorts vs. Sound SortsThese two types of sorts are included in your kit, but they servedifferent purposes. Concept sorts are a great way to introducesorting to your students. Concept Sort DemonstrationBeforehand, get your students thinking about conceptcategories. Select some items in your classroom to contrast,such as writing utensils vs. paper items. This will warm upstudents for the following lesson.1. Select a concept sort and place the Cards in random order in

the 4-Column Desktop Pocket Chart.2. As a group, name each picture and talk about its content. Set

aside any pictures that cause confusion.3. Ask the students to help you explore ways to sort the

pictures. Encourage students to think big as they search forcategories that all the pictures will fit. Discuss all possibilities,and encourage using trial and error.

4. Try out students’ ideas as they talk about characteristics ofthe illustrated items. Show how some groupings can be limiting,and will produce many exceptions, while others are too broad oroverlapping. If necessary, lead the students with questionssuch as "How do these animals move? Do they walk? Do theyfly? Do they swim?"

5. Choose the simplest and most appropriate words studentsuse to describe the categories, such as "walks", "flies", and"swims", and use them while sorting. Change these names, ifnecessary, as the group refines the categories. Optional: Usethe provided Category Header Cards.

6. Sort the rest of the pictures with the students, testing thecategories before labeling them. When all the Cards fit intoeither column, go over the categories again with the students.

7. Write the category names on blank cards and place them atthe top of the pocket chart next to pictures that are takenfrom the sort, hand drawn, or cut from a magazine.

2. Ask your group questions about the sort and modelresponses. • “Why did you sort mop under mat? Mop and mat both

start with /m/.” • “Why didn’t you place mop under bed? Mop doesn’t belong

under bed because it doesn’t begin with /b/. It begins with/m/ like mat.”

3. “How are all the words under bed alike? They all have thesame beginning sound.”

4. Ask each student or pair of students to justify theplacement of one picture in each of the categories. Vary thestructure of the questions: “Why did you place box under bed?Why didn’t you place mouse under bed?”

5. Write student responses on the whiteboard by filling in thefirst sentence frame.

6. Ask students to think about what they learned from doingthe sort. Model possible ways to describe their learning: • “I learned that box, bus, and ball all start the same.”• “I learned that mop, man, and mood all start the same.”• “My name, Michelle, starts like mouse. I can be Michelle

the Mouse!” 7. Have students pair up and talk about one thing they learned

by doing the sort. 8. Go around the group and have pairs describe their learning.

Picture-Word Sort DemonstrationDepending on the level of your group, the lessons could bespread over a three-day period. Pay attention to the needs ofyour group and pace each lesson accordingly. The steps beloware for a beginning sound picture-word sort but can be followedfor a short vowel word family picture-word sort as well.

Lesson 1 (Picture Sort)1. Select two or more beginning consonant sounds that your

group needs to practice (for example f and h), gather theircorresponding Cards, and set up a pocket chart in a visibleposition.

2. Hold up each Picture Card and have the group name it. Setaside any pictures that are unfamiliar.

3. Hold up one Category Card, such as fun, and name it. Placeit at the top of the first column of the pocket chart.

4. Hold up the other Category Card, such as hill, and name ittogether. Place it at the top of the next column of thepocket chart.

5. Select a Picture Card, name it, and ask if it starts like fun orhill. When the correct category is named, place the picture inthat column.

6. Continue sorting all the Picture Card in this way. 7. Reflect on the sort, ask for additional pictures that could

fit in the sort, and talk about how the sounds are alikeand different.

Lesson 2 (Picture-Word Match)1. Review the picture sort from Lesson 1 by naming each Picture

Card aloud with the group.2. Hold up each Word Card and have the group read it aloud.

Essential Picture Sorts™ Demonstration Cards, 2nd EditionPicture Sort Demonstration Lead a small-group demonstration whenever you introduce a newtype of sort, focus on a different sound, or notice that studentsneed additional support. Here is one of many possible ways tomodel a closed picture sort: 1. Select a sort to demonstrate (for example bed and mat).

Set up a pocket chart in a visible position.1. Hold up each Category Card and name the picture with the

group. Place the Cards at the top of the pocket chart.2. Select one Sort Card and name the picture, such as bird.

Ask the group if bird sounds like bed or mat. When the correctcategory is named, place the Sort Card at the topof the pocket chart.

3. As you continue, sort pictures by comparing them to theother words in each category: “Does ball sound like birdor mop?”

4. Sort all of the Picture Cards this way. 5. Have students name the pictures in each category. Having

students use a different or even silly voice the second timewill engage them and help solidify the patterns highlightedin the sort.

6. Reflect on the sort with your group. Talk about how the wordssound alike and different, and what challenges the studentshad. See examples of how to do this below.

ReflectionAs important as doing the sort is reflecting on it. The reflectionperiod is when students get a chance to connect the patterns inthe sorts to the larger picture of language and how it functionsas a whole. Write the following sentence frames on a whiteboard:

I sorted ________ under _________ because___________.________________________________________________I learned ________________________________________________________________________________________.

1. After students have named the pictures in the categories,ask them to think about why they sorted certain picturesinto the selected categories and how the words in eachcategory are alike.

alike and different. Emphasize the spelling patterns thatemerge. For example, fox and fun both start with f.

Lesson 3 (Word Sort)1. Review the picture-word sort from Lesson 2. 2. Clear the pocket chart, leaving only the Category Cards at

the top of the columns.3. Hold up one Word Card and read it aloud, such as hop. Ask if

it starts like fun or hill. When the correct category is named,place the Word Card under it.

4. Continue sorting all the Word Cards by reading them first andthen asking if they sound like other words in each category:“Does hip sound like ham or hop?”

5. Sort all the Word Cards this way. 6. Reflect on the sort with your group. Talk about how the

words are alike and different, and what challenges thestudents had.

Variation:Depending on the level of your group, you can opt to combineLesson 1 and Lesson 2. The lesson would include a review picturesort and then a subsequent matching sort with the Word Cards.The steps for Lesson 3, however, should be done on a separateday following Lesson 2 to allow children adequate time andpractice before transitioning into word sorts without the supportof pictures.
